Pioneer Cemetery - Pioneer Cemetery, Ehrenberg

Back in the days when goods were transported by river rather than by land, Ehrenburg was a busy…read moreplace. It was originally founded in 1869 and named after a German emigrant, Hermann Ehrenberg. The town thrived at this tpot where there is a nice bend in the river and steamboats used to stop here. Sadly, the original town of Ehrenberg is mostly gone and what remains are these stone-covered graves and hand-carved wooden markers. Many of the markers say "Unknown." The tall stone and concrete marker was added by the Arizona Highway Department in 1935. The sign reads, "Pioneer Cemetery. First used some time after June 16, 1862. Some of Arizona's earliest pioneers, people of every race and moral persuasion, lie here in eternal peace. The last burial was on April 22, 1988. La Paz County Historical Commission." The sign on the marker reads, "Ehrenberg Cemetery. This monument built to perpetuate the memory of the pioneers, trailblazers and adventurers that rest in these unmarked graves." I would recommend paying extremely close attention to where you put your feet. Aside from it being a cemetery, it is the Arizona desert and there are insects and snakes around some of which could cause you to need a cemetery of your own. There are a few signs and monuments telling its origins and about the pioneers, trailblazers and adventurers buried here. There is an entire family there, buried together in separate graves, named the Daniel family. Most graves are unmarked. The cemetery blends in nicely with the surrounding desert area, with rocks and cacti plantings. Each grave is raised and covered with a pile of rocks, probably keeping with the original burials. Fascinating, I enjoyed my visit and paying tribute to the brave souls that came before me.

Area 66, just outside Yucca, Arizona, is a classic roadside America stop. You'll know you reached…read moreyour destination when you see what looks like a giant golf ball show up along the road. This weird building has had many tenants over the years -- including a real estate business that actually turned out to be a complete scam, selling houses that never actually existed! Today, you'll find a strange museum that houses what the owners say is evidence of alien encounters in the area. We had our dog, Doug, with us and were allowed to bring him in with us as long as we carried him. So I definitely got my workout in that day! The museum is tiny and costs $10 per adult. Did I understand everything in the museum? Did it make sense? Umm, definitely not! But we think it was well worth the stop for the weird experience alone. Before you leave, make sure you stop at the little store at the base of the museum to pick up some beef jerky.

The gift shop is small and they are expecting more inventory soon. The displays were nice and informative. I like the history of the location and information about project Icarus. The women on site were very friendly. We didn't pick up snacks at the store but it seems like the jerky is something worth trying. There was one additional shop on site that was closed but has beautiful sculptures near it. I recommend you to stop by, stretch your legs, and get creeped out by the alien stories. Can't wait to see how this place evolves.

Ughh... sad place. I…read moredidn't stay long. It was hot, dusty, and uncomfortable, and honestly pretty depressing. What I saw felt more bleak than interesting, and there was nothing about it that I found uplifting in any way. There is a bit of history here. The area used to be Camp Dunlap, a World War II-era U.S. Marine Corps training base. After it was decommissioned, most of the structures were removed, leaving behind the concrete slabs and bunker-like remnants that give Slab City its name. Some of those old concrete huts are still around, and a few have been brightly painted, which was probably the only part I found visually interesting. It sits out near Slab Mountain, and by that point I had already seen enough. I didn't even bother trying to find East Jesus. It was time to go. Beyond that, it just felt like a mess. There was a lot of garbage, very little in the way of amenities, and many of the people living there looked really down and out. It had an eerily familiar resemblance to parts of LA's homeless encampments, which made the whole experience feel uncomfortable rather than unique. For me, this is not a tourist destination. There's very little here that I found remotely interesting, and definitely nothing I'd describe as inspiring. Not for me. 1-1.5 stars
