The breakfast was also great, fresh and a good selection of food. Even tomato juice was available. As there was a lot of traffic at 10am, the service was not able to clean up the tables in time for new guests. The breakfast room is maybe a bit too small for this size of a hotel, the noise also was not so relaxing. As we were unlucky and 2 of 3 lifts were broken it was a bit of a problem to find directions in the so called "Schleuse" which should be named as eg. staircase. We were not the only one trying to find our way. The parking areas weren't properly signposted. This is really a big thing for improvement. Think of big signs, color sections or or or. Just let the people find their way in an easy way that no frustration comes up. Without the broken lifts we would not have recognized that, but we have. Otherwise more stars would have been possible.

I have no complaints on the Service, amenities, rooms were clean and quite and overall great value. I had the breakfast added to the rate and very good European/German breakfast. Great location in the city and we were able to walk everywhere for dinning and site seeing. Close to cafe just across the street. The dinning room was open for cocktails and beers in the evening. I haven't stayed anywhere else in Wurtzburg so I can't compare like I usually do but you this hotel is worth the stay if you are here. I would most likely stay here again when traveling for work.

I understand that there will always be variations in furniture in the room, but this was a bit beyond what one would expect. They need to learn the difference between "antique" furniture and just plain old furniture. (I will admit that we did stay in the cheapest room but at 156 euro a night I expected more) However, the location was beautiful. High on the hill-a bit difficult to get to-but wonderful. You can have a complimentary breakfast on the terrace overlooking the city and the mountains. The pool has a similar location and there is a small outdoor seating area where you can sun yourself and enjoy the view! There is also a sauna, but we were unable to keep it working :/ Another plus was the staff. All of the staff were very helpful and willing to work with us and help us enjoy our time there. When we asked for directions they were clear and helpful and had maps at the desk. The restaurant was a bit pricey, but the food was good, especially the deserts. Just be aware that the portions are small, but tasty.

The desk clerk handed us a key but was extremely vague about where the room was located. After three exhausting trips up four flights of stairs attempting to find it, the clerk finally came up and showed us the unexpected path: we had to walk through the dining room. She was quite blunt and unkind about the miscommunication, which was disappointing and not the warm welcome we hoped for. The room itself was small, and the shower was tiny--definitely functional, but tight quarters. However, the location of Hotel Alter Kranen is truly its saving grace and main selling point. The central position makes all those other complaints fade away. The main sights of Würzburg were mere steps away. We could see the famous Old Main Bridge and the towering Marienberg Fortress right from our window, and it was a simple walk up to explore both. If you are here to see Würzburg, the proximity to everything is unbeatable. The hotel breakfast was offered as a convenient option. There was a good variety of items available, but we noted that the majority of offerings were not homemade. It was perfectly fine and convenient to grab before a day of sightseeing, but not exceptional or memorable. In summary, Hotel Alter Kranen offers a superb, central vantage point in Würzburg. While the physical space is small and the initial service was lacking, the prime location outweighs those negatives significantly. We had a friendly welcome at reception, despite having two soggy dogs in tow, and arriving later than expected due to the awful traffic round Aschaffenburg. The en suite room was a really good size, and spotlessly clean, and luckily the dogs accepted that they weren't allowed to jump onto the white bedding. The breakfast buffet was lovely and fresh, with a good selection of breads and cereals, fresh fruit eggs etc. No need to go hungry here. There's also a lovely terrace, which I'm sure would be a delight to sit out on if it hadn't been so cold and wet. Two brave souls did sit out one afternoon, they must have been in love. There's a well stocked bar, and the service was excellent. The only downside was the restaurant. The service was very good, but the food in the evening didn't reflect the rest of the hotel, and left us slightly disappointed, if not slightly queasy (a medium steak which arrived dripping with blood and a beautifully cooked piece of chicken murdered in its bed of dubious peanut flavoured sauce, were just two reasons we ate out the next evening). Looking at their website they are changing their menu at the end of March, so maybe we were just unlucky.

Couldn't get wifi to work though as I only once could see the ssid in the room with one bar reception. Breakfast was an amazing experience, the breakfast lady looked after us and made sure we had all we needed... The choice was great. Though the breakfast is extra (€10), and there are a couple of very nice coffee places towards the train station which I'm sure also would been great!

I couldn't sleep at all during my time here due to the noise and heat, and wish we had stayed in another hotel. Breakfast was good with lots of options. The noise and heat were a deal breaker for me. Also, we had to park a distance away and carry our luggage to the hotel since there is no on-site or very close by parking.
