    Portobello Beach
    Tanja R.

Good for an afternoon stroll and close to the town center of Edinburgh! Year after Year I celebrated New Year either on or near Portobello Beach and it's about time to mention it's perfect location and proximity to Edinburgh for it's citizen to enjoy this place. It's so easy to get to - by car and by bus 26. From Portobello village you walk down to the Promenade and start your stroll along the beach, passing several coffee shops, pubs and ice cream parlors. There is even a local swimming pool that you can enjoy. I think that cycling is also an option. The promenade can be crowded in the summer as its an ideal place for relaxing after a long week. Still worth it so for adults and children alike.

If you can get past the litter and the loitering teenagers, Portobello is a wee delight! Essentially it's a mini seaside in the suburbs of the city - a 20 minute bus ride from the centre and you're there. Set on the open banks of the Forth, there is a long stretch of sand, an amusement arcade, a chippy, sea and a Wimpy. And as for sun? Well, if you're lucky! You are in Scotland after all. It's easy to forget that when you're enwrapped in the seaside feel of Portobello, but nevertheless it's still a bit chilly! I would advise against visiting at night and it's not the most glamourous area in the world, but it's still quaint, old fashioned and a lot of fun for the kids. It's in a reputable enough area and there is a wee shop around the corner for the beach where you can buy a bucket and spade. So what are you waiting for? Wade in!

After staying in Edinburgh for four years I finally visited the area of Portobello. And after that initial visit I have always advised people to pay it a visit. Located on the coast, next door to its neighbour Leith, Portobello is home to Edinburgh's only beach. The beach is long, sandy (a rarity in some parts of Scotland) and is always busy when the sun comes out. On top of this, the buildings that hug the surrounding area around the beach can only be admired. Many are from the Victorian area and add to the beauty of the area. It seems an area where you can chill out and feel the sea breeze! On top of this, the high street which is set around the town hall has all the local shops you will need and has a good selection of bars, little cafes and restaurants. Portobello is quite a distance away from Edinburgh but Lothian buses provide a good range of services which stop every twenty minutes or so and take you up to the city centre. The area has defiantly improved over recent years and is certainly one of Edinburgh's best spots to visit.

Portobello's beach can be one of the best places to come with you pals when the weather's fine. In the Summer it offers the perfect opportunity to pick up some rays, go for a swim (if you're brave enough), build some sand castles, or generally just chill out! The beach front is littered (literally as well unfortunately) with with bars, ice cream vans and shops, amusement arcades and fish and chips shops and offers an authentic seaside resort trip, without even leaving the city! The beach can get a bit cramped in certain parts when the sun does come out, but if you walk towards southwards, towards Joppa, you will find that the beach is cleaner, and that there are less people.

    Sunny day

We enjoyed our visit, we both preferred it here than commonwealth pool or the WHEC as it is far less busy, and easy enough to get to by public transport, right on the beach promenade, it's a great location. This pool provide water toys and floats which we had lots of fun with but I must make you aware that the showers although partitioned are shared with both male and females and male attendants on duty but this wasn't a problem for me or my niece but it might make some people uncomfortable. Also, make sure you bring change for the locker because they don't have cash only card payment. It's handy to know that there are Turkish baths here too and a sauna but these must be pre- booked. All in all we had lots of fun and will definitely be returning again soon!

I have to confess that I've never ventured into the pool despite being the owner of an Edinburgh Leisure membership for the last 2.5 years.... The building itself is lovely & old. it's fair to say that some bits have withstood the test of time better than others. The best thing about it though is the cafe on the first floor. It's at the front, has lots of windows making it light & airy & more importantly, gives great views of the beach. I love sitting up there with a pot of tea & a freshly baked scone watching the waves crash onto the beach. They serve generous portions of the brekkie stuff. Their bacon rolls are generously stuffed & very filling, scrambled eggs are fluffy & come piled high on mounds of toast but my favourite is their home baking. I'm a sucker for a good scone. They do fab scones which are always fresh from the oven. Perfect after a run along the Prom. In fact their scones are the reason I run along the Prom. There's nothing like the promise of a reward to make me get out of bed on a Saturday morning & go for a run.

Ever wondered how Edinburgh looks from the outside?…read more Well, one place to view the glorious city of Edinburgh is from Silver Sands in Aberdour. Silver Sands is both a beach and a park. The beach, accessed via a very steep road, is, apart from St. Andrews one of the most well known and most visited beaches in Fife! It even has been awarded a blue flag for its qualities! A word of warning though, even on a warm day, the water is still freezing cold, so best advice is to stay on the beach! The park surrounds the beach and is very large in comparison. It has plenty of car parking spaces and has many sporting facilities. It has enough grassy areas for football or other field sports, a children's play area and plenty of cycle paths. Usually on a sunny day there is an ice cream van, or it is only a few minutes walk to the high street for some snacks! However, the main attraction of Silver Sands is its magnificent views of Edinburgh. Arthur's seat and the crags dominate the skyline. Also, the sheer size of Edinburgh is quite surprising, as when in the city it does not feel that big. Silver Sands is an ideal place to chill in the hot summer and has one of the best views of Edinburgh!

With the park between the beach and the town, parking is plentiful and beach access via a gentle path and some steps. The road from the town to the car park is almost flat, with plenty of cycle paths, walkways and sightseeing opportunities, including the walk round Hawkcraig point for the view onto Aberdour, to the west, and over to Inchcolm and the medieval Abbey. Further west rise the engineering wonders of the Forth road and rail bridges. To the south can be seen part of the expanse of Edinburgh with much of it hidden behind the bulks of Arthur's Seat, Castle rock, Clermiston hill etc. Beyond that can be seen the Pentland hills with the Hillend dry ski slope lit up like a Christmas tree at night. Central Edinburgh--the New Town and the Old Town have become surrounded by soul-less housing schemes but the historical character of the city is well worth exploring
