The gate was built as the entry control point from the south in the city walls in 1612 by Giovanni Battista Aleotti and dedicated to the reigning Pope Paul V. During the French occupation, the gate transiently was renamed Porta Reno.
We winded through the medieval section of Ferrara passing many medieval buildings. Inside Porta was info & a map of the city in the 1400's and information. It's funny because when we walked in the gate said Porta Reno, facing the city. When we walked out of the wall in the front of the gate said Porta Paulo. read more
