The Port of Leixões was originally constructed in the 19th century, has been renovated multiple times, and today is the largest artificial port in Portugal.
My husband and I went on a Celebrity Cruises cruise ship to this port for one day. In the morning, we walked through the terminal building to the front desk to ask an employee for maps and recommendations on what to see and do. He kindly gave us two maps, one of Matosinhos and one of Porto. We then waited for a bus to take us to downtown Matosinhos. We walked around the streets to browse the restaurants, stores, and a beach, and we ate delicious baked goods.
Later in the day, for our shore excursion, we met our tour guide outside the terminal building and boarded a bus that took us on a tour of Porto. We enjoyed seeing old trolleys, a park, historical buildings, and a food market where we ate more baked goods, delicious ginja, and port wine. Unfortunately, some other tourists never returned to our bus, so we wasted time waiting for them and lost out on the last part of our tour. Porto, however, was still a nice port to visit and had nice people, interesting history, and tasty foods and drinks. read more
