With several trips in and leaving, I've had time to be able to fairly look at the overall experience vs a one time trip. The bus weaves through Malaga giving you time for a bit of window shopping (from inside the bus) on the way to the station. The bus we use, prefers exact coin change which is collected as one boards. The bus station appears older and as I've found typical in Spain - it is clean and they clean frequently. The train station is also there. Two public washrooms, one on each end of the building. For some reason, the cleaning team seems prefer clean the closest bathroom right during morning commuter peak and evening commuter out peak times, plan accordingly. Due to the heavy consistent traffic flow, do not expect a spotless bathroom, The hand air dryer was not functional (bathroom furthest back) when I have used it. The front washroom has never been open - constantly being cleaned - each time I have been there morning and evening. There are several little mom and pop places selling food, drinks, ice cream, one also sold hotdogs. Prices are higher than at grocery store as is expected. Staff has been friendly. One was changing a phone card for someone and accepted our coins so we wouldn't have to wait. Waiting outside there are benches with a roof overhead. Clean enough for me to still allot 5 stars. Buses have numbered slots to pull in and signage with bus arrivals/departures is prominently posted outside by benches. Bonus - dining, cig shop, wonderful malls, ATMs all a quick crosswalk, maybe two.

The station can be reached by taxi, foot, ride share, buses, etc. The easiest thing is to buy a ticket online using a mobile app, that way you can add it to your iPhone wallet and show right away. There are several companies working out of here, but the main ones are ALSA and Interbus (Damas). As you walk into the main entrance, there is an information desk that will not sell tickets but tell you where to go. TV screens also show the name of the destination (or arrival) and which platform it is located. Not great options for food or shopping, but the restrooms are clean and free.

I thought this was the worst train experience I have ever had. And when I asked the woman on the train how do we wash our hands she said you can't. If you need to poop you better hold it or not take the train. I will never take public transportation in Spain. It is also very difficult to understand and I speak Spanish.

The small station is located northeast of the major attractions e.g. the New Bridge and the Bull Ring. We went straight out of the station and walked along the Nida Martinez Astein perpendicular to station on Av Andalusia; turned right on Avenida de Malaga; all the way to the end to reach our two primary attractions we came to see. There is a tourist info center right there. Touring done by 1300. With plenty of time to spare we stopped at a nice, casual restaurant called Las Maravillas for coffee beer and salad. Thinking there's an earlier train to Malaga (nada!) we returned to the station by 1420 and ended up drinking more beer and coffee to while away time before we could board the train. We noted the bus station and a supermarket (bottled water) are a short walk to the right when you exit the train station. Perhaps buses may have great scheduling flexibility. Or wander around to visit more sights.
