Pops is kind of okay. They have a photo booth. They have a pool table. They have cheap Pabst beer on tap. The owner is punk-rock glamorous in her own way and she has a dog that is sometimes in the bar. So, it has the essentials for any greasy haired punk rocker mission hipster. Sadly, the crowd is FULL of straight hipsters, and emo-aggressive straight guys who want to rule the pool table. Which is why I haven't been in a long time. They should have a queer night. The only time it's ever acceptable to purchase Hamm's is when it's significantly less expensive than any other option on the table (or the bar, as the case may be). Pop's not only legitimizes Hamm's purchase and consumption, but makes anything else seem crazy... They'll even poke a hole in the top of the can for you so you can pound 'em frat-boy style... how's that for service with a sneer? This bar is in stumbling distance from my house, so it gets extra points for that. It can be a bit grungy and they can play the music way too loud (especially on Wed Metal Night), but it is unfailingly the place I find myself after dinner parties, or on Friday night with friends. Cool little dive bar with cheap beer and for the most part a pretty chill and friendly crowd. We shot a few games of pool here, and I have to give them credit for having a really nice pool table. Can't blame the table for being off if you biff a shot here. They also have a South Park pinball machine, which even though I didn't play looked awesome. The bartenders were a little slow, but it was the Fourth of July, so maybe they were drinking too and should be cut a little slack. However they did clear everyone out around 8:00 which was kind of weak, but did afford me the opportunity to see something funny. While I was waiting for my friends to finish their beers I was outside having a smoke and witnessed a mass exodus of folks on fixed-gear bicycles. I guess I hadn't realized how many hipsters were here until I saw that. Pretty amusing. read more

I've only been to Pop's once for a birthday party... but it was nice. Nice and crowded, and although I had to shout to talk to friends, the drinks were good, the bartenders were friendly, and I never had to wait very long to order some booze. Oh! New to the San Francisco area, my lil' brother and I wanted to hit up a couple of bars that were local to 24th st to pass the Friday night hours. Our first stop Pop's. There was very few people although it was already 10pm. The bar is small, dark, dingy and with the eerie feeling you have some one starting at you. I LOVE IT! We found a couple of empty seats on the booths as we started to order some drinks. Drinks were very cheap I had a shot of a mystery tequila and a red stripe, the total was 9 dollars.... (im starting to like SF a whole lot more than LA). However the bartender there whose name escapes me was a bit of snobby bitch...yeah I said it. The gentlemen beside me after hearing that was my birthday ensued a conversation about the city, his life and how much he hates both. (I needed to get out, fast). I think I would dig this bar a bit more if it didn't cost me 20 bucks to get to and back. Definitely cool for a neighborhood dive. I love the photo booth and the graffiti in the bathroom is engrossing and creative. This place can get pretty smelly on busy nights. I'm not saying its the crowd of unbathed hipsters or the weathered old building. But it could be. They have daily specials that I do like to take advantage of. My favorite being $1 pints of PBR on Saturadays. After 4 i think. The staff can be pretty obnoxious carnival folk, but you know I guess thats part of the whole shtick. On one visit I had been ordering drinks but not leaving a tip. I usually do this at the end if I plan on being planted at the bar. Just seems kind of cheesy to drop money evertime they bring you a drink if youre not moving. Do you give your waitress a buck every time she refills your coke? Didnt think so. So this bartender, as im getting ready to leave, gathering my things and actually REACHING FOR MY WALLET says "Thanks for the tip" Ughh Who the hell does that. A while back I got flagged down by a pal o mine who likes to hang out with the skater crowd, he was smokin out side o Pop's bar... cool sign i thought. We went inside, it was a mellow evening, the beer was cheap and the bartenders friendly. Some how we wound up comemorating the evening in a rush of Inland Empire brotherly bonding in the photo booth. Nothing perverse, just two men who share a love for our common home town. In the passing years my sweet baby found the place on her own and fell in love with it on her own terms so now I'm doubly compelled to return. i don't make it there often but every time I do, I have a great time... in spite of the "I'm going to pick the most ironically jacked up song on the juke box" competition that seems to occur nightly. read more

I agree 100% with Adam S' review from November 2014. Change is "good", as everyone either adapts or rejects and sides form. Old Pop's was the definition of a dive bar. New Pop's retains some character and adds more options to the equation. I'm sure the fact I'm writing a review for Pop's in itself is ironic to the owners. I don't mind either way, as Pop's is my soon-to-be-go-to neighborhood (quite the hyphenation) bar. Just keep games on the TV's and relatively cheap booze flowing. Best hidden gem. We entertain a lot. We are native SFers and people ask us all the time where to eat, listen to music, what hotel to stay...etc. My husband and I both agreed, we were not going to tell anyone we know about this place. It's our place to hang. Old school, nice mix of SF crowd. DJs with diverse selection to go with diverse SF patrons. (Even old school music and Latin grooves! What?!). And enough TVs and a big screen in the back to watch Warriors, Giants, Sharks and Niners. Oh and a small dance floor where the big screen is. (We came here the night Prince passed away. They played his music and videos all night!) Lastly and very important- we have experienced 2 male bartenders, I think one was named Justin and another day it was a guy with glasses who played hockey (we didn't ask he noticed we were watching Sharks game and started a nice conversation and engaged kindly with us). Very cool bartenders and professional! Work fast, clean and know how to serve drinks well. Even down to the fresh lime wiped on the rim and salted on the rim of a cold draft Pacifico!! The music is too loud, the clientele thinks they're tougher than they are (or perhaps they think they're appropriately tough and are just tougher than I think they are?), there isn't enough light, and it's mostly dudes, but... $1 Hamm's on Tuesday, $1 High Life on Wednesday. So while I can say it's not my exact cup of tea, the perks often outweigh the negatives and I occasionally pay it a visit. If I lived closer, I could see this place growing on me. I like Pop's because it has managed to stay filled with default-gentrifiers and yet keep it's welfare- friendly ambiance. i went in there once with a co-worker who was really freaked out about all the white people, and when we made it clear that we were there to get hammered cuz work that day had sucked for her, the bartender gave us free doubles! The booze is relatively cheap, the drinks are strong, they have punk-rock on the box... No matter how much the rents go up in the Mission cuz pierced anglo hipsters keep showing the middle class white folk it's safe to live here, i will always have a soft spot in my heart for Pop's! read more

You had me at Free Bacon. With this bar being two blocks from my house, I frequent it pretty often. The fact that everything here is pretty dirt fucking cheap makes me come here even more! Not to mention the free bacon on Mondays. Things to avoid here: Mission brofest guys. They can be so annoying and sometimes the crowd in itself gets kinda...off.
