Sometimes you just have to leave a bar alone. I don't mean you need to avoid it. I mean some dive bars are not meant to be customized for a more upscale hipster quotient. This one is called Pop's for a reason, and judging from the regulars, it's a dependable watering hole for the local workers who aren't ready to go home. They were pretty much epoxied on their stools for the night. I give Pop credit for having a menu on the wall with standard cocktails identified as Pop's this and Pop's that. I gravitated to the $12 Pop's Sunrise because I was in the mood for a tequila sunrise. Sure enough, that's what it was (photo: https://yelp.to/sM17afdtfo). I might return for Pop's Paloma or Pop's Morning Coffee as long as the regulars can give up a seat for me. As I stood for a bit, I think it would be a 50/50 proposition the next time. I asked for a Sapporo, the bartender told me they didn't have it (it was on tap). Told me it was $7, then charged me $8 after pouring. Not cool, as the prices weren't clearly listed. When I asked to fill my bottle with water, he basically talked down to me by asking aggressively "you're sure you won't drink from this while you're here? I could lose my job" Over 5 times in a row. Like whaaaaat... felt like he was antagonizing me, very annoying and horrible customer service. Not chill for both situations. Doesn't matter how many bars you work at etc, just be honest or find a way to amend your mistake. Honesty was shown aggressively and with like a victim mentality (it's not my fault you ordered an unpopular beer?) This bartender offered two cups of water, which are free, to make my experience "better" what a joke. Then later I was just drawing and intermittently chatting with another patron, he told the waaaay out of it security guard to toss someone out sitting near me. However, security told me to get out instead, and rushed me to pack my jacket and art stuff to go ASAP. I did not rush out as my beer was still half full. They amended the situation by redirecting but daaaammmnn that was a whack first time in. The bartender then really forcefully wanted handshakes to say "we're cool" what a fake interaction. After not stepping foot into a dive bar since COVID, I forgot to keep things very simple (i.e. shots): Sweet Bartender: "Hi!" Me: "Hi, how are you?" Sweet Bartender: "Good, what can I get you?" What a great local gem this place is! Never before have I felt so welcome in San Francisco. This place had a great vibe and a local community feel. We were welcomed by the owner who gave us great information about the area and the history of the bar. I loved their margaritas and how they serve them in bags. They have made some great changes to accommodate covid rules. They are located in the mission district and a close walk to all kinds of amazing street art and murals. I'm at the bar with a $20 in my hand waiting patiently for a drink. I see a worker running around like a chicken with his head cut off and he comes in front STEPS on my foot. Normal reaction; get this idiot off my foot. He goes, "you wanna push me again?" I reply, "you're on my foot." Then comes back again, "you want to push me again?" The drinks are not very good here but the worst thing about this place is the crowd. It's a bunch of old people that scream and yell outside, drive so then leave the bar totally wasted and drive away. Its not even the kind of place I can enjoy when coming home from A night out for a night cap. It's just so weird and every dude wears a jersey and rocks a slicked back ponytail. Omg it's the worst vibe ever. I fully support people of all ages enjoying nights out but they never give up. I watched a girl stumble out of the bar and get into her car and hit a car over and over again trying to get out of her parking spot. I recently was able to try Pop's Bar's Bacon Bloody Marys and it definitely lived up to the hype. The garnishes were a really great pairing with the bloody and you get a generous piece of bacon. It was only $9. Pop's also has a good selection of beer both draft and canned. It is all reasonably priced. The bar itself is cute and has a really chill ambiance. I really like that they have different DJs and/or bands that come out during the week and on weekends. The different DJ sets are pretty cool and I love the themes they have going on. Bartenders are super nice and attentive. The bar also has a rad photo booth where you can take some cute black and white photos. It is also a dog friendly bar, which I love! read more

Love pops. Nothing but good things to say here. Been coming here for years. This review is for the short brunette bartender with glasses. I ordered 2 cazadores margaritas, make it a double please... for me and a friend, like I often do. Haven't had a drink yet, not looking to get hammered, just don't like teenie singles. "I can make you a single" I'm sorry, what? You can't make me 2 doubles? My friend shows up and she makes two singles in pint glasses overflowing with ice and a splash of mix, so they taste like tequila. $#%^ist margaritas ever. You, young lady, make me never want to come here again. If you don't want to make drinks people ask for, tell them straight, and tell them why. My first time at pops bar and the doorman with dreads decided my legal California ID didn't look like me enough (whose DMV pictures even look like them?); I understand paranoia when it comes to carding people but you don't have to be SUPER rude about it either. Me and my friends were so appalled we went down to hang at the Blind Cat a block or too down where customer service was much better :) if you're looking for a dive bar with cool staff they deserve your money more Sorry your doorman sucks! I imagine that there are some polarized opinions when it comes to the newly renovated Pop's. In San Francisco, and especially in The Mission, the debate over gentrification is practically as heated as debates about religion in the 1500's. Granted, we don't see much burning at the stake, but you rarely find opinions that are not pretty set on one side or the other. Most will either welcome the changes to Pop's or despise them. "Pop's, Before": I came exactly one time. It was 12:30pm on a Saturday. I was a bit hung-over (Maybe a bit more than a bit) and had to use the bathroom. Those were the only reasons I stopped in: Hangover Remediation and a Bathroom. This was a Super-Divey place. Dark, dank, rough around the edges. I probably wouldn't have stayed for more that my Pit-Stop and one Cheap Beer, but (see the original review) I found out that people actually put Bacon in Bloody Mary's. I won't lie - for all the dark-ness and dank-ness, for all "go-the-f-back-to-suburbia" this place had to offer... They crushed the Bloody. This thing was killer. "Pop's, After": If the sign on the door hadn't said Pop's when I walked in, there is no way I would have believed this was the same place. The place has been turned classy. It's like Rocker Tommy Lee turned into Realtor Phil Dunphy. It's now a nice, although not super-pretentious, neighborhood bar. You can take a look at the new photos - if you remember what it once looked like, you'll be stunned. They still had the Bacon Bloody, but it wasn't quite the same. Again, check out my photo vs. some of the originals from "Pop's, Before". The service was nice, the crowd was not much different than a place like R Bar in the Tendernob (yeah yeah, I know some of you think that place is much more fratty than it really is, a la Wreck Room). So, what is the real analysis? Was it better to have the edgy, divey, f-the-squares joint? Is it better to have another perfectly affable spot with daylight and nice finishes? We've endured another Neil Young to Neil Diamond transformation. But, such is life in SF. I don't know what the answer is, but I know in SF that this is something that is a fact of life, writ large. For what it's worth, I think they did a nice job. Had I not known "Pop's, Before", I would have found this to be a nicely-finished neighborhood spot that was friendly and had good service. But, there is a little something in my "go-the-f-back-to-suburbia" soul that reminds me that eventually, suburbia can swallow you up and turn you into everyone else. And trust me, I grew up in Golden Valley, Minnesota. If there's a moral of the story, it's that times change. Often times progress is good - but it is worth thinking about what won't be anymore. I saw FunCheap list their emo/pop-punk night as a fun free activity(2nd Saturday of month). I hadn't been to this dive bar before in the Mission. I hadn't heard of it, but I have been going out to bars like Bender's and Knockout with people. Those are alternative dives in the Mission. I had a virgin bloody Mary and actually that was my first bloody Mary. It's tomato juice with spices and a different flavor. You gotta do the photo booth. Note: It's $3 and you pay with credit card. It's spits out two copies and you gotta sit still quickly and take 3 pics. The outside looks old, but it's modern inside. It's digital. The emo/pop-punk night music is okay, but they didn't spin any major hits by major emo bands that you would instantly recognize and just feel excited about. There isn't a visible DJ. We had fun at this bar. My friend said he would go there again. It's alternative with a young crowd, but there's no single lifestyle look. On 24th Street. read more

I ended up at Pop's Bar late on a Friday night a couple weeks back, arriving just in time for a drink before closing. The place was fun, not too busy with an easy ambiance and friendly service. I guess it's a dive bar? But like a nice dive bar for young San Francisco professionals. Craft beer, photo booth, white people. I was already pretty tired/tanked when we arrived, so I just had a beer and took some photo booth pictures as a nightcap. It was great! Drank a Deschutes Armory XPA and the photo booth pictures were appropriately ridiculous. I don't know that I'd seek out/recognize Pop's Bar again, but I had a good time here and would recommend it for a drink in the Mission. read more

The drinks are way cheap here, but it's the photo-booth that really intrigues me about this place. I love it. It's got great matte, grainy, black and white pictures. Trust me, it quickly sucks you in. I find it's a good way to immortalize boozin' nights. I never ordered a drink here, so can't report much about the bartenders, but there's a nice laid back vibe here and I saw some dogs hanging out in the front, which is always a great sign about an establishment in my opinion. My friend works here so obviously I'm biased, but I still wanted to write a review because I talk a lot and you should listen. Pop's isn't exactly a "dive" bar according to my standards, but more of a chill local's bar full of an eclectic mix of people. I was just visiting San Franciso this past weekend and came to Pop's once on Friday night, once Sunday afternoon and then again on Sunday night. Each time I was there I saw some of the same people lingering around but then also a wide range of other folks young and old. Bros, hipsters, crusty looking punks and then just your everyday neighborhood alcoholics. It was never so crowded that you couldn't find a seat, but still enough people to have an interesting evening of it. Drinks are strong and cheap and they make a perfect Bloody Mary (with bacon!). They have some table games and a juke box in the back along with plenty of seating and a couple booths up at the front right under the windows. Definitely check this place out if you're in the Mission, I loved it here regardless of my friend working here. Also, they allow dogs inside! read more

Where else can you watch a skater boy tame the half pipe, leave your mark in the bathroom, immortalize yourself in the photo booth, and rock out to 3 Inches of Blood and Slayer... all why enjoying an ice cold Tecate? Malia (the owner and sexiest bartender to grace the Mission) makes the best concoctions, always lends a friendly ear, and never hesitates to treat a familiar face like family. Pop's is the kind of place you tell your grandkids about, reliving the glory days of having one too many, singing and dancing with good friends , flashing your boobies without shame, getting a piggy back ride home from your boyfriend, and ultimately puking in the bushes. I owe some of the best times of my life to this bar. Shame on all of you who gave Pop's less than 5 stars. Obviously you just don't get it, and in the end, it's probably for the best that you don't. This a real hipster bar. Tons of kids dancing all over the floor. And I spotted a few people of a more mature age. Kudos for the creative mixed drinks. I didn't get one because they are so pricey. Stuck with a stoat beer for $6 vs. $12 cocktail. Really fun bathroom with all the R rated pictures all over the walls. Oooolala! Men with mustache handles wearing only that. LOL. Super retro. I heard the men's bathroom has a bunch of women on their wall. My gay friend wasn't into that. Music can get super loud here. Great once the booze kicks in. For me I wasn't on that level. I was going to say Pop's Bar has a dingier and grittier feel to it when I realized that it was fairly recently renovated so I can only imagine how much more "authentic" it must have felt before. This is a quintessentially unapologetic dive bar. You do real drinking here. It's not the fanciest of environments but it feels comfortable. Even more so with a pint in hand and some good conversation. We definitely weren't the regulars when we popped in but it never felt awkward as we drank a couple of rounds. Pretty reasonable prices too. In a city that is changing on a dime before our eyes, I'm glad that stalwarts like Pop's remain to remind us of its eclectic history. read more

This is probably the best bar in San Francisco right now, particularly between the hours of 5 and 9. At least it was last night, when there was a DJ playing old-timey big band-type jazz that reminded my friends and I of the "Grandpa's Naptime" playlist that used to be on Songza (and is now on Google Play, as I just learned). He (the DJ) was an older dude who had a long gray beard and tattoos and let's just say that nobody was gonna tap him on the shoulder and say "excuse me, can you please play some hip hop"? Then at 9 PM that DJ left and it became "Emo Night" and I lasted about 5 minutes before I was punching myself in the face repeatedly. But I'm still giving Pop's 5 star because it's amazing. read more

Simply put, the best neighborhood bar in the city. Rotating beer taps for your beer snob in the group, well poured cocktails for the stumbler in your group, always right music vibes for the dancer in your group, and take it or leave it vibes for the hipster of your group. The owner Tom is focused on providing an open and engaging atmosphere for all and the people behind the bar have personality for days.
