This place used to be such a hometown staple but, within the last month, we've noticed a steep decline in the service & food quality. Strike #1 happened when I ordered my go-to "Mexicali" wrap like I had done dozens of times before. To my surprise, there was a huge piece of bacon in the middle of the wrap. For some, this would be a welcomed treat, but for me - I have a strict restriction against pork. Our waitress retrieved the manager who brushed it off as a "common mistake" because they prepare the bacon near where the wrap was being made. They generously (lol) discounted the bill for half of the wrap since my boyfriend had already eaten some of his. Strike #2 happened about 2 weeks later when I decided to give them a second chance and order online. After being put on hold twice, no one ever came to the phone again. Strike #3 happened today when we placed an order over the phone and came back 20mins later to pick it up and the woman in the front said that it wasn't ready yet. We returned to the car and waited another 15mins before heading back in. The front desk lady then said the order was never written down and she had to take it from scratch. When my brother told me that one of our relatives was interested in meeting us at the Pompton Queen Diner, the food snob in me scowled. Yes, I know that diners are a New Jersey staple, but food at these quick rest stops rarely surpasses mediocre standards. My brother insisted that the Pompton Queen was the exception. With two other decent diners in my hometown, I had never ventured the additional few minutes to the PQ, so I conceded and agreed to give it a fair shot. As with many diners, the parking lot was packed. The interior looked like most others, if not a bit nicer, and certainly cleaner. My eyes were drawn to the florescent lights that were illuminating the dessert counter. My jaw dropped and my mouth watered when I saw the massive hunks of cake. The varieties were endless - chocolate fudge, carrot, Oreo, cheesecake, strawberry shortcake, and more. They each looked bakery-fresh rather than day-old diner style. I even discovered that the chefs bake all of their pastries in-house! Things were off to a great start. While my family members enjoyed their multi-course prix fixe menu option (available until the wee hours of 10 pm each evening), I opted for the Grilled Vegetable Salad with Grilled Chicken. The meat was well marinated, pounded thin, and cooked to perfection. The mixed field greens were topped with dried cranberries, blue cheese, and various grilled vegetables, such as red peppers, zucchini, eggplant, squash, and more. Each hearty vegetable was expertly prepared and served in 3 slices, giving the perfect sample size. The salad was filling and delicious. It was also quite a deal at around $10! It now came down to the final stretch of the meal, and the dessert case beckoned me from across the room. I succumbed to my cravings and shared large slices of Oreo and Chocolate Fudge cakes with my brother. Each bite caused me to melt a bit more into the comfortable booth. The Chocolate Fudge Cake was particularly sweet and packed with cocoa goodness. Ahh, even the memory is drool-inducing. The Pompton Queen is a diner that surpasses all others in quality and affordability. My brother and I are tempted to return whenever we are in the area, whether it be for their moist cakes or gourmet menu items. read more

Visited 4/12/15. This place has every and anything to satisfy your taste buds. It was pretty crowded because today is Sunday, but we were still able to be seated rather quickly. Our waitress was extremely pleasant and fast with our orders even though she was busy. I ordered a bacon hamburger deluxe (comes with fries, pickle, cole slaw, lettuce, and tomato) and my boyfriend ordered a turkey bacon deluxe comes with fries, pickle, cole slaw, lettuce, and tomato) with a strawberry milkshake. Both meals were delicious! A plus for me is that the restrooms were very clean. Diner bathrooms normally aren't clean on busy Sundays but they did a great job of making sure theirs was. read more

My wife and I had to drop off and pick up our car for servicing on Monday and Friday nights last week near your diner. The food was great, portions enough to enjoy for another meal, friendly folk all around, and cheesecake dessert that puts a large well-known chain to shame. There's a reason why this place is packed on the weekends! This is hands down my favorite diner in the area. I'm not afraid to say how awesome it is - I know there will always be a wait no matter what. Most of the time, we get lucky and find seats at the counter. Breakfast is for sure where they shine. I love the fact that you can ask for your hash browns extra well done and actually get them well done and crispy. Forget other places with their wimpy potatoes. The wheat toast is a delicious multi grain type of toast. So good. So is everything else they crank out for breakfast. However, there are days where I'll want an actual lunch at a diner. Their menu is extensive, but I wanted to see how they'd do with a salad. My grilled chicken salad with grapefruit, candied nuts, and goat cheese was delicious and a ton of food. By far THE BEST diner in North Jersey. Fast service even with a line out the door, really tasty and large portions, plus a massive menu. This is far and away my favorite diner. This is one of the pricier diners in the area. It is always packed and sometimes we have passed on dining here because of the lines but according to the owner, the wait is never more than 20 minutes. I am going to wait next time I see a crowd and see if the 20 minutes is realistic. I have had dinner here twice and have been impressed. Food was fresh and served very hot. Although every table was filled, our order came out in a very reasonable time. It is better quality food than your average diner. Desserts are made in-house and look great.
