DIGUSTED with the food AND the service, though I can't tell which was worse. We ordered an eggplant parm (light on cheese) with penne vodka and a black bean burger with fries. The eggplant parm was more like a plate of grease with two sloppy looking eggplant slices buried under cheese....and the penne vodka was no better, a big plate a penne with vodka sauce thrown over it...not mixed in, not evenly spread, just thrown on top of it. I literally had to get a to-go box to put half of my food away to be less disgusted and try to finish the rest. The burger was OK, but still burnt and the fries had definitely been fried and re-fried 2-3 times. I told my server that I was unhappy and she seemed concerned and said she'd call the manager over (shes only reason this review even has 1 star) After waiting a while I tell her that a manager never came and she said she'd go call her again. I watched her go over to the manager who dismisses her with a wave/shrug in a "ugh whatever. Ignore them" manner. Tired of waiting and wanting to go find somewhere else to eat, I go up to pay and I'm standing right next to the manager who then turns her back to me and plays dumb. So I tap her on the shoulder and tell her about my disappointment in the food and her lack of response only for her to tell me "I'm sure it'll be better next time" in a sarcastic/mocking tone....Obviously she does not care about the customers, the restaurant, or the food but simply the money. I eat out a lot, so I'm never cheap with my money esp when it comes to food, but spending those $30 on that lunch was painful. The diners kitchen was out of order on the date I visited but the place was open for business anyway!!!! We weren't told of the issue until we were seated. The waitress apologized for not having any specials due to the kitchen malfunction. Needless to say, the place was packed with diners who were all waiting for the food they ordered. I grew up in NY and have lived in NJ for over 15 years now. This is the best diner ever. The menu is extensive. The diner staples are terrific. My son loves their pancakes. I try something new every time I go and haven't been disappointed. I've had the Waldorf salad, boneless Buffalo chicken bites, chicken sandwich, French toast...some kind of Mexican style egg roll thing that was terrific. I can't recall what else. The service is very friendly and I haven't had an issue getting help from the waiter in the 10 or so times we have been there. Sometimes there is a wait for a table on weekends around dinner time. Haven't been there during breakfast hours so I cant speak to the traffic then. There is plenty of parking and some benches out front where guests can wait. read more

Been here a handful of times now and haven't had any issues. The service is top notch but I find the food not cutting it for me in some departments. Although diner food is good I never find anything here amazing. I respect the large menu and the consistency with everything I have ordered so far. I went with the Texas Avocado Burger cooked medium and it came out just like that. This was their most popular burger but I was a little disappointed with the flavor. Was nothing more than a regular burger with avocado on the top and 2 chips in the middle with a boat load of sauce. I appreciate a well seasoned and flavored patty versus drowning it out with a sauce. With this being their most popular burger I was expecting more. My friend ordered the Chipotle BBQ Burger and that looked to me to be much more flavorful and appetizing. He devoured that and enjoyed it very much. My other friend went with the eggs Benedict and has no complaints. And lastly my other friend went with the MexiCali Wrap and also really enjoyed it as well. I usually don't pay too much attention to diners--- they can be convenient places to meet people, and you can usually eat pretty hearty for not a ton of money. I've been coming here every other year of so for a family reunion (birth mother, aunt, late cousin), because it's fairly convenient to where all of us live (it's actually just up the road from where I grew up, and just down the road from where my aunt lives), and nothing has ever stood out in a negative way--- except for one time, a few years back, where I ordered a dish (can't remember what now) that I thoroughly disliked and couldn't finish. But, hey...it was years ago, I haven't had any negative experiences since then, and everyone I meet who has any familiarity at all with this diner always speaks highly of it. And everyone is entitled to one slip-up, no? So...the annual reunion was scheduled...and I figured I'd pay more attention to what I ate and try to give a fair and measured evaluation, previous years-ago negative experience notwithstanding. Yesterday, the weather was horrific...torrential downpours, roads closed, accidents and emergency vehicles with lights flashing all over the place. My birth mother and I made it to the diner after a pretty hair-raising ride, but my aunt had to take a "rain check," figuratively and literally. Despite the weather, or perhaps because of it, the diner was packed. The people running the place were very gracious and accommodating, and never lost their cool. While they didn't seem to take reservations in the conventional sense, they knew we were waiting for a 3rd person, and they promised to save seating for us. Which...even though the 3rd person didn't show up...they did. I started with the Matzo Soup (I'm not necessarily the biggest fan of Jewish cuisine in general, but I love Matzo soup, although I'm not sure if it's spelled Matzo or Matzoh), which was good. Usually in diners, I stick with what I know can be prepared reasonably well--- either breakfast food, and(or) sandwiches like the Reuben, or maybe a plate of Meatloaf. Or desserts like banana cream pie. I used to order Italian food in diners...because I love Italian food...but it was almost always a mistake (and that was in any diner, even the best of them). Still...I didn't really feel like pancakes or a Reuben, so I ordered the "Special," which was Roast Pork Loin. I like pork but I'm hesitant to order it when I'm out, because it usually consists of 2 measly, overcooked pork chops. This time--- different story. The portion of Pork Loin was immense, not overcooked, and tasty. I ordered a side of carrots, which was also a huge portion. I'm not especially enamored of vegetables, but the carrots had a sweetness to them that wasn't overpowering or off-putting, and...uncharacteristically...I enjoyed them very much. I also had a side of mac'n'cheese...which I normally enjoy immensely...but I wasn't crazy about what I received here. One side of the bowl was watery; the other side was pasty. It wasn't a large portion, which...considering...I didn't mind. Overall, though, that was the only real negative I could come up with. The meal, in my mind, was a winner. My birth mother had Quesadillas with chorizo inside. She let me try some, and I thought it was good. Again, the portions were generous. She ordered wine; I ordered Coke, which they refilled without my asking. I wasn't expecting it, but it was appreciated. The waitress was friendly and efficient, and...like the owners...kept her cool admirably, despite the very packed house. Only one slip-up--- my birth mother didn't want her side of French Fries and bequeathed them to me, but they never arrived. As it turned out, that was fine. There was so much food, and I was so stuffed, that the Fries definitely would have been overkill. And the service was so good and professional...who is going to quibble about an unnecessary side of French Fries? Not me. We had coffee (no room for dessert), and the prices when we went to pay the check were reasonable. I think I've finally been able to put the trauma of that bad dish from years ago out of my mind once and for all. This is a really good diner. Food and service are very good; prices are very reasonable for what you get. If you're looking for a diner, and you're in the area, you can't do better than this. read more

This is the best diner in New Jersey and possibly the entire East Coast the food is great the service is wonderful diner itself has been updated several times since I started going there. My husband and I have been searching for a diner that could be our go-to and I think this might be it! We came on a Sunday night at 8:30 and it was super busy. We were seated after a brief wait and the waitress promptly came over to ask for our drink order. Their menu has the regular diner food and desserts at reasonable prices. I ordered the chicken avocado panini as a wrap and my husband got the chicken bacon bbq sandwich as a wrap. We also each ordered a cup of soup (matzo ball and cream of turkey). The soups were room temp so I wish they'd been hotter, but the flavors were good. The wraps were great - they were served hot and stuffed with a lot of chicken. Couple eggs... over medium with ham for me and bacon for the Mrs. Done to perfection. (Which isn't always the case) Eggs done the way you want them seem to be avoiding us... either too runny or too well done. This place got them right. Today anyway. My only complaint (and this is for diners and restaurants everywhere) is why do they serve the bread (toast) with butter. Toast should be served dry, with butter on the side. Only rarely has that happened to me. Ok, I know I can ask for 'dry' toast, but I failed to do so, so today was on me. Still... diners take note. Stop slopping so much butter on our toast! read more

My wife and I ate at The Pompton Queen the other night after over a year and a half of not having visited and it was good, but not great. We had a glass of the pinot grigio each and it was pretty good, with a good pour and at a fair price. My waiter who was very good mixed the chicken noodle soup with a matzo ball for me so I could have some veggies and chicken,,the soup was very good, the broth tasted fresh, better than most. My wife had the grilled chicken with grilled vegetables and quinoa. The veggies were fresh but not grilled. They were steamed and that was disappointing for my wife, They lacked the grill flavor she was expecting . The chicken and quinoa were fine , no skimping on either and they were fresh and the chicken WAS grilled. I had my favorite thing from the menu the Greek chicken taverna. I was disappointed . I remember it being cooked fresh to order (which is why the menu says it takes 15-20 min) and coming out juicy and crispy outside. This time it was obviously cooked from precooked chicken that has been in the refrigerator a little too long, It tasted like leftover chicken to me, and for $18.00 I expected better, I expected it to be as good as I remember. The fries were good, and the steamed broccoli was fresh and not too soft. We both had the Greek salad with our meal and it was good. We ended up paying $60.00 ($50 for the meal $10 tip) and left underwhelmed. read more

The spinach pie with a Greek salad all for just $14 bucks. The spinach pie is delicious and better than any Greek place in the area. The dressing they give you with it,I wish I could bottle up and the tazicki (I know I spelled that wrong) sauce is a must have when you order from here. Been here on multiple occasions in the past. Every time I come, I don't know what to expect because I've had some really good experiences, but also some really poor ones as well. Simply put, everything is really inconsistent. My most recent experience was a poor one unfortunately, especially considering I moved out of state and came back to visit. The wait to be seated was about 15 minutes, can't complain because it was relatively busy. Everything else, however, is worth a complaint. Our waitress was clueless throughout the whole meal, and the food was decent (also considering everyone else's opinion on their orders). I ordered the Blueberries & Cream Gourmet Pancakes. When the pancakes came out, they were tasteless little disc of bread with some blueberries. If it wasn't for the syrup, I don't think I would've been able to finish my food. And they must've forgotten about the whipped cream on their Blueberries & CREAM pancakes because I didn't get any. It was hard to justify paying $10+ for 3 tiny pancakes when I could've just went to IHOP. 3 stars because I know this place can be really amazing at times, but my most recent visit was a huge disappointment. read more

I think this is easily the best diner in New Jersey, which is saying a lot considering that on 23 alone, there are countless options - worth coming to all the way from Bergen County! There WILL be a line when you arrive, but you'll be shocked by how quickly they'll get you situated. They're very effective at getting people in and out, but while seated in the diner, I've never felt rushed or like someone is hovering over me. The most that we have ever waited, on a Saturday night, was 30 minutes. They also serve alcohol, which moves them to the top of my diner list (and $3.75 Boston Lagers? I'll take it). Because they are so packed and are trying to move people in/out, the service is very quick and the food is also delivered very fast. I'm a huge fan of the cheese quesadilla, because I eat like a four-year-old when I'm there, but recently had their Greek wrap (in the vegetarian section), and it was SO good, and had stuffed grape leaves in it, so I'm elevating to more adult choices. Last time I was there, someone at the next table ordered a grilled cheese that was enormous, gooey, and came with a ton of fries, so I may be going back to childhood favorites during our next visit. read more

During dinner hours be prepared for a wait. They make great breakfast, burgers and sandwiches. I have been here probably 6-7 times (mainly because my fiance loves this place) and it just doesn't do anything for me on any level. I have had the burgers, Cubano, salad, turkey clubs, and breakfast (the breakfast is actually the worst I have had in the state since moving here a year ago). Not one of them was ever really any good. Just mediocre and in some cases sub-par. The ambiance and service is also very average yet somehow this place is busy usually and there is most likely a wait when you come here. Overall I just can't recommend this place when there are so many diners in the area. If I was trying to stay on 23 and get food at a diner, I would go to the RT 23 diner, I have dined there about 3-4 times and I have never had a bad meal. While my wife and I were running about we found ourselves stopping in at the Pompton Queen Diner for a bite to eat. The diner offered ample parking for all its patrons and is kept clean inside and out. The interior is decorated with paintings which I found interesting and lots of Oak woodwork (I'm glad I don't have to keep that clean). You have a typical diner counter, booths and a dining room. The atmosphere is very pleasant as are the staff. As soon as we walked in we were greeted and promptly seated. The server was very nice and prompt with our beverage order. For my meal I chose a Fired Fillet of Sole Sandwich with a side of French Fries and my wife had a salad. The meal order was brought out fast and was done just right. The tarter sauce which was on the side is made in house and has a hint of horse radish which gave it a nice little zing. The food was good the service good and the establishment very clean. If I found myself in the area again I would not hesitate to stop in for a bite to eat at the Pompton Queen Diner. I forgot to mention that they offer Catering Services as well. read more

Consistently awful. The service is slow, and 4 of the last 5 times I went there my order was wrong. It's not like I ask for anything crazy, I order off of the menu. I order eggs over hard, I get scrambled. I order a burger medium, it comes out very well done I get fries with gravy, I get fries with cheese.... no gravy. It is so bad I haven't gone back in years. This place is so good, do they even need my review?? I haven't gone to a better diner in Jersey. I have yet to find one. Teddy is so fun, but I think he only works the evening/ night shifts? SO filling. There are always some menu items that are better than the others. Their burgers are amazing, their pastas are really good, please get their fries. Waffle, regular, or sweet potato, any choice is a great choice. Get their honey mustard sauce. I don't know what their secret is, but it's the perfect sauce for their waffle fries. &Their salads are SO good. Always fresh, flavorful, and FILLING! (the three F's were completely unintentional) It's hard to come by salads that are filling. Their appetizers, I LOVE. Their soups! LOVE. They make it so hard for me to just order one thing. I want to get everything, but their serving sizes are huge. BIG sad. My only complaint is that it can get a bit crowded, even if there are plastic walls separating the tables. If covid scares you, just wait until covid settles down a bit more. The food taste is always consistent, so don't worry about the taste changing. And maybe this is just me, but I'm not a huge breakfast person, and sometimes I want their pasta. But they only serve pasta later in the day..
