Spicy Salmon Build Your Own Poke Bowl
Cindy G.

First time at this location. Excited to see a poke place so close to me! I built my own bowl (spicy salmon, regular salmon, salad/rice, corn, avocado, cucumber, carrots, masago, edamame, nori, and crisp onion.) I thought the food was fresh. I chose the spicy aioli sauce. I think I'll try another flavor next time. Also, I ordered a black sesame , vanilla chocolate chip, and coconut mochi ice cream 3 for $5. Overall, I like my bowl! Will be back for another Poke bowl!

Mochi with sorbet inside (passion fruit, lychee, green tea)

One hot thunder-stormy evening, we did not feel like cooking. My wife decided to try this poke restaurant for the first time. I was at home, so this time my review focuses on only what I saw from this order. Our order: 1: Johnny Utah (salmon) 2: Da Kine (tuna) Mochi ice cream Da Kine (tuna) - 3 stars My biggest problem was the "sushi rice". I used to work in a Japanese restaurant, and made sushi rice before. After we cooked the rice, we put it into a big tub and poured a vinegar, salt, and sugar mixture before we start "cutting" the rice with a wooden paddle. That kept the rice fluffy and moist. But the rice in this bowl felt pretty dry. This was not proper sushi rice. It felt like they cooked it in a rice cooker with the vinegar. I didn't like it. Also, the poke's main ingredient is fresh fish. The tuna was dry and rubbery. The vegetables and the sauce were good. I liked their flavor. But probably I will not order this again. Johnny Utah (salmon) - 4 stars This one includes regular rice, not sushi rice, which I can clearly see was the better option. It is still a little hard, but much more pleasant to eat. Salmon was nice and soft. Sriracha aioli was tasty. This can be a good choice for the first timer. Mochi ice cream we tried were lychee, passion fruit, and green tea. They all had a frozen sorbet texture, rather than ice cream inside. I thought all were just fine. Lastly, we received no utensils in our to-go bag. My total experience score was 3 stars.

This trip I ordered red snapper with garlic huachinango con ajo). It was super fresh hot and crispy without being dried out. It comes with salad, white rice with vegetables and garlic bread. Everything was Excellent. Upon arrival you are given a table starter of fish ceviche (ceviche de pescado) it is delicious paired with the pepper sauce and caliente sauce and always fresh. I had a strawberry margarita and Modelo as a beverage. Margarita is fresh and not premade strawberry mix and liquor content is standard. I have also had empanadas, caldo de Res soup, seafood soup, steak tacos, and pollo enchiladas verde during my visits. I have never had a bad meal and I have always had left overs.

I visited J. Alexander's, and if you're not familiar with the Oak Brook area, just know this…read morerestaurant sits a little back in the cut. So make sure you're paying close attention to your GPS when you're heading there. The good news is it's located in a mall area, so there's plenty of parking, which makes it very convenient. The atmosphere is not overly upscale, but it definitely still gives fine dining energy. The low lighting creates a more intimate vibe, making it a great place for a date night, dinner with friends, or even a relaxed evening meal. The food is consistently good, and the drinks are always on point. This time I ordered the baby back ribs with mashed potatoes, and it was my first time trying that dish there. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone good, and the mashed potatoes were a perfect pairing. My friend ordered the pork chop, butterflied and cut open, and she said it was simply amazing. Now let me get to the real reason I keep coming back. The carrot cake. I have had carrot cake from big-name bakeries and small local mom-and-pop spots, and I'm telling you right now, J. Alexander's has the best carrot cake in the world. If anyone wants to debate that, please let me know where I should go try another slice... or better yet, buy me one so we can compare! Because of that carrot cake alone, J. Alexander's will always be in my Top 10. So yes, the food is good, the drinks are great, the atmosphere is nice...

I had the cesar salad and the Hyde i think it's called it was a regular grilled chicken sandwich with small cut fries. My boyfriend had the salmon and rice with mac and cheese. The service was amazing my server was top of the line. She checked up on us every chance she got she made us laugh and enjoy our experience even more. The ambiance was amazing very light dim with a touch of romance giving it the right atmosphere for us. We also received a special cake for our anniversary which was a plus. 100/10

The…read morefood was really good--clearly very homemade--and you can tell care goes into both the flavors and the menu. The options are a little limited, but in a good way: everything feels curated rather than overwhelming, with some unique combinations you don't see everywhere. The cocktails were especially fun--interesting, creative, and great-sounding even before the first sip. Huge shoutout to the staff too: super knowledgeable, friendly, and happy to talk through the menu or make recommendations, which made the whole experience feel relaxed and welcoming. The space itself is small, but it works. It adds to the cozy vibe instead of feeling cramped, and overall the atmosphere is warm and inviting. Definitely a good spot if you're looking for something a little different!

Incredibly excited to have a legit cocktail place in Villa Park. Amazing location which used to be…read morecalled Fuel and Crème. New ownership is keeping the ice cream (cinnamon gelato is fantastic) along with the Pineapple Dole Whip. Theme is North American Fusion so think Canadian, US, Mexican fusion. Menu include regional favorities across North America from Birria Poutine (amazing) to a White Fish Sandwich with Squid Ink and lime crema (come on now! It's fire!). This place is unique distinct and different and I love it. One of the owners has some legitimate cocktail chops (finalist in season one of Mixology on Netflix) and is bringing his background and passion to Villa Park! You can also try his cocktail bar in Itasca called No School Tomorrow which is similarly different, delicious, and unquestionably a great time especially if you lived life in the 90's. How freakin lucky are we to have a gem like this in Villa Park! My only hope is that we don't blow it. Like any new restaurant they are refining menu items and working out kinks. Food and drinks are on the pricier side (they have a solid kids hot dog and fries option for $5 for kids though) but what is the going rate for Squid Ink?! It is also unlike anything else you will find in Villa Park or Western Suburbs, or really anywhere so I would say absolutely worth it. Staff is also ridiculously friendly and excited about their product. While they have awesome specialty cocktails that you will not find anywhere else (pozole spices in a cocktail?!) they are also great making any classic cocktail you can come up with. My one feedback for now would be to up the dish-ware if going with higher price items vs going with paper products. This might just be they are testing things out. I'm also excited to see some brunch options or perhaps coffee and pastries in the future to get the biker/ boozy brunchy weekenders with kids crowd.
