We had reserved a table for dinner but when we arrived (with a starving seven-year-old in tow) we were told that there was no table available. It transpired that the person taking the reservation had got the date wrong. Extremely annoying and very inconvenient, but I am aware that accidents will happen. However, neither the employee concerned nor the guy whom I took to be in charge showed any contrition nor made no attempt to remedy the situation.
Worse still, they then blatently lied by saying that they had confirmed the (wrong) date and time with my wife and tried to blame my wife and make out that she was the liar when she said that they had not. We pointed out that there was no way that we would have booked a table for a later date because we would be 150 miles away. The only reaction from mine host (a relative of Basil Fawlty?) was to say "Good" in an insolent manner.
At this point I raised my voice - not in righteous anger, but to ensure that everyone else within earshot was aware of their incompetence and duplicity. Incidentally: they should note that the polite and effective way of confirming a booking is by email or text, but I suppose that this would reduce their wriggle room for blaming others for their mistakes. read more
