This Clinic provides great care; they do take the time and listen. They use an electronic health record system Athena which is one of the best. I have experience with other systems and they not as good. I am sure in a busy clinic there are things that can be less than ideal which I have not experienced at Pohala and I've been going to see them for a few years now. I like the free tea coffee and masks, they offer gender affirming care, and I didn't have to wait more than one week to be seen. I also appreciate that they they take trillium Medicaid ohp health insurance. I cant say whether I love the care I've recieved because my first appointment is soon but my girlfriend was very pleased with her appointment. This place felt much less dull and depressing than the standard doctored office and i didn't feel ashamed or judged for my questions. I fired Julie Foster today due to continually being late, the ageist remarks I've received from her staff, and just being overbooked where you feel rushed in your appointments. Also note, she told me specifically that she would be letting her Medicare patients go because of the low payouts. read more

I'd warn against this place. They had told me they accepted my insurance but surprised me later with a big bill. The doctor themselves seemed really distracted and like they didn't care at the first appointment though they were more attentive at the second. read more

I've been going to Pohalo since my cco assigned me here. From the get go the logistics were messed up. I think they know they made some portal/phone system/scheduling decisions that have hindered their mission and miss the mark on communication. I have had great experiences with acupuncturist and naturopath there and everyone I have worked with has the best intentions and are knowledgeable. Nasal specific technique was so interesting. They can't draw blood samples anymore. When I see what they charge my insurance for acupuncture compared to other offices I am appalled. A friend had to pay out of pocket and I should not have referred him here. read more

My impression is flakey, disorganized, Portland-nice and likely interested in good insurance (not UHC). I was very excited to find a new ND clinic. Web site looked good. Unfortunately, reaching Pohala by phone is so difficult that I lost interest; impossible to reach their front desk. Tried several times a day. Rings, rings and always goes to voicemail. Imagine you need an urgent appointment and get a hold of a staff member via email finally, who suggests an opening the week after after a few messages, but then flakes out in the next email, never bothering to call you instead (at number you provided in each correspondence). To top it off, they they apologize and write brave words of how they care about your urgent need and we added you to an urgent list and I need info you already gave me... yada yada... but no call back since. Nope. All talk, no action. That was my experience. I'll find a better clinic. Sorry, I really wanted to like Pohala, I did. But now all I can think is, HalaPo(or) customer service. This office is beyond unprofessional. Despite my spending 20 minutes filling out their intake forms online days before my appointment, they say they didn't receive them. I also had previous medical records sent and the providers received a receipt of fax and the NP did not have them for my appointment and then told me she wouldn't have read them anyway and guilted me about how much medical professionals work. Not a great way to build trust. None of the providers wear masks which is an accessibility issue to me and they look at you weird when you bring it up. I do not believe this practice is evidence informed. I felt dismissed, belittled, and gaslit. The clinic then asked for my feedback in a survey which I shared and then they sent me a dismissal letter from their clinic-- ZERO accountability. They only post 5 star reviews on their website, misleading. I really am concerned they are operating in our community. read more

I have NO idea how they have these positive reviews--someone else on here also shared my surprise. I'm actually in the process of writing a complaint with the Department of Health--their behavior has been outright negligent and abusive. Their phones: DO NOT WORK. I called them five times in one week--and when they do finally call you back, they don't leave you a phone number that actually works. First, my primary care doctor, Mikayla Richards, looks and acts HIGH. I can smell the weed. She even said that "as long as I let her know I was high" on the drug test, she would clear it. This might be good news for some people--I, personally, found that comment really worrying. She *seemed* like she really cared about her patients, so I was willing to brush off some of these red flags. I was in a bind, and I found the clinic at the right time because my meds were about to run out. After we had an HOUR LONG APPOINTMENT about my medications, Mikayla STILL didn't prescribe me my medications. She told me she would fill my ADHD medication at 50mg, and keep all of my other medications as they were. I dropped off a note when it was time for my meds to be filled--and to be polite, Iisted which ones I needed. I didn't have to do this. They should have already known. But, again, I was worried because the doctor looked high. When I showed up to the pharmacy, **ALL FIVE OF MY MEDICATIONS WERE WRONG**. Since they never answer their phones, I did their slow, ineffective office a courtesy by WALKING to drop off a SECOND note with every single medication, the dosage, and the frequency. This was ignored. I wait a week and come into the office. My doctor looked even higher this time when I saw her, and she refused to fix my medications and threatened to call the police. What... the? This was SO incredibly bizzarre. Joke's on them when this place gets shut down after an inspection. I was very lucky and found a new psychiatrist right away. read more

They're a mess. They don't get the forms you submit online, and different receptionists give wildly differing availability of the workers there (I don't think any of them are an actual doctor). In the waiting room, a woman was talking about how she kept getting emails saying she owes them money and that she was overcharged. At the end of the day, they don't prescribe any meds and they won't do anything to help you. It's a scammy place that just seems like a way for people with useless degrees to collect money. The person who saw me (when coming in, they first said "my pronouns are they/them") casually suggested getting a hysterectomy several times within 30 minutes of seeing me even though they're not an expert on pelvic pain, and I pointed out the research that women with hysterectomies often still have severe pelvic pain; it's not a cure for endometriosis. That was messed up and unethical, to so casually suggest a permanent and severe procedure while definitively ruling out using pain medication to help me, even though that is an infinitely less drastic approach. So no on pain meds, but yes on hysterectomy - what the hell kind of treatment approach is that? And the pronouns - a woman can't opt out of sex-based oppression and misogyny by being called they and them. That's not a thing. read more

I setup an appointment here and told them that I have been having a pretty severe cough for weeks now. We setup an online appointment so I could be seen and treated. How ever several days prior to the appointment I got a new phone with a new number and to login to the online appointment there was a confirmation number being sent to my old phone number that I no longer have.. I began calling them 10 minutes prior to the appointment so that they could help with that. Called them a bunch of times and didn't get a hold of anyone. A week later they sent me a paper that I'm discharged from the clinic for missing my appointment. I needed immediate medical attention and failed to get it here. read more

The first time in my 40+ years a doctor has listened to, trusted me, and worked with me as a partner versus telling me I'm imagining things, they know my body better than I do, and dismissing me. Like several other people, I have had a horrible experience attempting to go to this clinic. Full disclosure, I never actually saw a provider. My experience: Attempt #1 Leave work, drive 20 minutes to the clinic. Front desk staff says there was a mistake and my insurance didn't go through yet so I need to reschedule or pay out of pocket.. WHAT? This was after getting a confirmation email and text and providing all my insurance information ahead of time. Attempt #2 Ok, I will give them another chance. Without asking me, the front desk staff scheduled me with a DIFFERENT doctor for the next week. Ok, I will give her a try. Leave work, drive 20 minutes to the clinic. Arrive to find out my appointment is NOT in their system, after again receiving confirmation emails and texts. The provider cannot see me because she is with another new patient. Do I want to reschedule? No thanks. CRAZY - I have never had this happen once let alone twice when trying to see a doctor. Save yourself the time and find a different place to go for care. read more

I don't do this often but I have been holding this in for a long time. Hearing people don't have to deal with this. I always ask for an interpreter because I'm Deaf. Access is important because how can I communicate with others that doesn't know sign language? The first time I went, it was great. The doctor was amazing and all. However the second time I tried to go in, they refused to provide me an interpreter because it was out of their "budget". So I'm too expensive for y'all to take care of? OH AND the clinic had the nerve to charge ME for the FIRST appointment with the interpreter. $250?! So I have to pay for access while y'all have access for free? Next time don't deny a Deaf person interpreting services. That was horrible. It really affected my mental health. Thanks guys for the help. read more

I am so blessed to have found Pohala and Dr. Foster. I struggle with a lot of issues and Julie and the staff all genuinely care about their patients and are there to help us not just throw a band-aid on it. Julie listens to me and helps me find ways to adjust diet and lifestyle to help eliminate some of my problems as well as adjusting medications that are necessary and adding natural supplements to aid as well. I have tried to make this place my family doctor for over a year now and am left feeling completely frustrated and neglected at every interaction. The staff seems completely incompetent. After my first visit they failed to get test results back to me because they "lost all my contact info", despite the fact that I had written my phone number and email address more than enough times on my new patient paperwork. On a secondary visit attempt they asked me to book my appointment online, which I did. I tried to call multiple times to confirm this appointment but the phone was never answered. (Aren't they the ones that are suppose to call you for that?) When I finally showed up at my appointment time the receptionist seemed to not even know that booking an appointment online was an option and did not know how to find appointments that had been made through the online service. On my third attempt to see a doctor here I made a Telehealth appointment only to wait in the virtual waiting room for 30 mins before receiving a phone call asking for my health insurance.... which I had provided multiple times already. I waited another handful of minutes online before terminating the appointment and I received absolutely zero follow up about it. This place is a joke. read more

I saw Julie, the NP, and Malia, the acupuncturist. I was so impressed with both of them. The acupuncture was the best I've ever had and I've been to dozens of them all over the country. She is so caring and sweet and I felt so much better after my treatment. Julie was the same. No rushing you in and out. They take their time and actually look you in the eye. I also had a massage that was awesome. Everyone in the office is so nice and so professional. They are very loving and kind people. I highly recommend everyone in this practice. read more

I wanted to love this clinic. It's close to my house. It bills itself as being "integrative." There are several BIPOC staff and providers. However, when I called and left messages, no one returned my calls. When there was a billing discrepancy with my insurance and it turned out I overpaid, it took months and many phone calls before I finally received a check with my refund. My provider asked me to obtain family medical records to determine the best treatment plan for me. I spent a lot of time and effort in obtaining, printing, and dropping off to the clinic my deceased mother's medical records. I assumed I would receive a call in response to the medical records I provided, with follow up about how my provider wanted me to move forward with my treatment plan. Nope. Nothing. I dropped the medical records off in late fall 2020, and now it's February 2021. They have no portal for communicating in a HIPAA compliant way with their providers. This practice is a hot mess and needs a business manager to overhaul it. read more
