On our last full day on the island we knew we wanted to rent a golf cart and see the island. We figured we get breakfast in town beforehand so we asked our taxi driver to take us somewhere cheap and delicious!! We tend to stay away from the tourist traps and enjoy more local spots so he totally delivered here. The food was definitely cheap, ~$5 each for our meals, and boy was it good!! Definitely authentic with hot sauces on the side for your taste. Steven had a fried egg dish with ham, rice and plantains. I had a chicken tortilla dish smothered in sauce that was similar to nachos? and I asked for them to include 2 scrambled eggs in the mix. Yum! It's a hole in the wall for sure so keep that in mind before eating here. There's only about 7 tables and in typical Mexican fashion there is no A/C. A tiny lady in the back cooks all the food and you'll feel like you're in grandma's kitchen. Food was cheap, quick, large portions and best of all delicious!

The food was delicious and authentic. We liked it so much we went for breakfast and dinner! The service was super nice and the ambiance was very comfortable. I highly recommend trying this place out!

A mess of stuff as you can see with a bunch of gross fries on top :(

We were determined to avoid tourist traps while on our trip to Mujeres but may have diverted from our path way too far. I found this place simply by walking by it nearly everyday and observing the lines out the door and around the corner. I thought to myself, "this place MUST be amazing!! We have to try it!" And we did, to my dismay. Unfortunately, we found out that it was just simply a no frills local diner with paper thin, dry pieces of meat on a platter with a mess of other stuff. My plate, the combination flank steak came with the following: chips and guac, an enchilada, a quesadilla, 2 pieces of dry jerky-like flank, a salad, a bed of rice, and a bunch of fries thrown on top. I hate to say that none of the items tasted well made. The chips and fries tasted old and refried about 5x, the steak was so dry it actually tasted like jerky (took me awhile to chew and swallow), and the enchilada just looked sad. It was downright barely edible. Our other plate was the famous poc chuc plate, which featured another thin, super dry cut of meat (pork) that was also offensively salty. We looked around and the other guests appeared to be mostly local. It's too bad, I really wanted to love this place considering its popularity with locals and the excellent, gracious service. The bill came out to 200 pesos (about $10 USD) which is incredibly cheap, but may explain why the food needs some major help.

Sopa de ajo.

Decent food and a good variety at low prices - a solid alternative to the more touristy places steps away. I was by myself and had the carne tacos and the comforting sopa de ajo (garlic soup). They seemed a little irritated with me for not ordering more but that's life - in reality it's probably 3.5 stars.

I have been to this restaurant for 3 consecutive years. The first and second years were very good which kept me coming back for more! But somehow this year, their waitress had an attitude and just threw our orders on the table and not actually placing them in front of us. She forgot to give my boyfriend his beer AND even forgot to give us utensils to use! My boyfriend ALWAYS orders their special which is the poc chuc and he says that it was dry and just not the same as he remembers it. I ordered the bistek a la mexicana and I was halfway through my meal and found a long black hair wrapped around one of the meats. The waitress took it and told us that she would bring out another one. We waited for a while but it never came and instead, she brought us the check and charged us half the price of the entree with the hair on it.

Huevos rancheros

This is a great cheap eats spot in Centro. The two of us had huevos rancheros, coffee, orange juice, along with tortilla for only 165 pesos (about $10 US). It was definitely the most inexpensive meal we had on the island. The restaurant is typical Mexican with plastic chairs and table clothes, food isn't fancy but delicious nonetheless and the staff is nice and friendly

Poc Chuc manager's (??) recommendation!

The toast is always warm and it's perfect. Then she'll bring out the oats with milk and a bunch of fruit. Then a tiny bit of hashbrowns with two eggs fried perfectly. All for 190 pesos. Less than 10 American dollars. And breakfast can take an hour or it can take five minutes depending on how fast they're going. I love just honoring the location and the people that work here and just really enjoy myself it's a great place to meet with friends. It gets a really nice draft here of wind, too. It's such a pleasant place right off of Hildago. the food is amazing and the staff is out of this world. The ambience of just sitting on a nice quiet block when there's so many people really makes it an enjoyable experience.

Pro tip with all tacos: you gotta eat it fast or else the tortilla collapses in your hand. They had these amazing chips to go with not your usual salsa but a ketchup/mayo combo and a very very spicy chili crisp. I made the mistake of eating too many of the chips and not having enough room for my tacos. The coconut shrimp was just okay. Very tiny shrimp. My husband raved about the lime soup here for the rest of the trip; I can confirm that it was excellent. Fun casual atmosphere - our food came out pretty fast, even with all of the tables filled. Bonus points for playing music videos of 2010s pop hits on the tv by our table.

This restaurant definitely had I more local vibe compared to some of the tourist places up north. As soon as we got there I could tell the employees or maybe even the owner started counting up how many women are party and started to shuffling the tables around to accommodate us. This was definitely one of the highlights in terms of The food that we had. Everyone was happy with their dreams and their food We got the mixed grill which served for adults. The shrimp, the lobster, the steak, the chorizo all of it was a good mix. There was a lot of vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower as well as a salad. Someone else in our party got the enchiladas and a burrito and they're very particular about their Mexican food and they both said it was the best meal of the Trip. The only item I wouldn't order and not because it's bad just because it wasn't as good was the carbonara. I ordered it to split between the children and they actually loved it but if I were an Italian I would probably be left wanting.

This cutie locally food-focused restaurant sits on the north end of the island. The breeze in the back feels fresh and clean. You order first and then find a spot to make yourself comfortable. When traveling it can be hard to find a meal that truly feels refreshing and grounding, but Chaya and Cacao offers just that. Our digestion was in need of some TLC and we were grateful to see local kombucha and fermented foods on the menu. The apple and coffee kombucha is so refreshing and crisp. The iced matcha latte and iced sweet chai are also high on our list. The falafel bowl is balanced well leaving you feeling satisfied, but not heavy. We love the Caribbean bowl which has sweet plantains, rice, beans, mango, fibrous greens, sweet mango, and grounding potatoes. The avocado toast was the best I have ever had with various well-matched flavors working in perfect harmony. Summer rolls are fresh with a crunch that. feels hydrating on a hot island day. Overall this Isla Mujeres vegan find gets a 10/10 from me. The foods feel wholesome and nourishing! Not to mention extremely delicious. The "Cook " was, for lack of better words, aggressive, When I asked a question about the menu he turned to me asking me if I new how to read the menu. We thought he was joking , I wanted to make sure I will get my order the way I wanted, so I asked the question again. To our surprise he was upset and had the nerve to suggest I couldn't understand the listed ingredients. We had enough of that, got up, paid our coffee, and left. Unfortunately, we forgot something and had to go back in, finding them both bad mouthing us after we had left. As we left again, the "owner" wanted to know what our complaint was and as I was explaining, the cook poked his head, yelling at us. Anyway, you get the picture, it was shocking and disappointing, but we found a better (and WAY less expensive) place for breakfast down the street. Glad we were forced to find Mogaqua.
