Dr. Shah and her staff were super pleasant from the moment we walked in! This was a huge relief even though I already knew my son has always had a difficult time at dentist visits. He even felt more at ease when we walked in the doors. Our dental tech was in training, but it was totally fine because both technicians worked well together and the preceptor was super friendly, too! Thank goodness because I've seen where preceptors can be harsh to orientees. This was NOT the case and the whole process was quite nice. Multiple X-rays had to be done which previously was a difficult process for my son. He did them just fine. The process was explained to him the whole way through in a way he could understand which was much appreciated!! The exam could have been a disaster, but did you know flavorless paste is a thing? Yup! You don't have to have fake flavored toothpaste to have your teeth cleaned with. My son hates all the flavors so finding out flavorless toothpaste was a thing at the dentist was a game changer! Listen, when I'm telling you going to the dentist with him is difficult, I'm not kidding. I'll take any win we can get and this was a big win! When Dr. Shah came in and introduced herself, my son was a little bit apprehensive, but still felt comfortable enough to let her explain what she needed to do. He even let her put a bite block in his mouth for a procedure we were not anticipating we would need to do today. She took her time with him and never seemed annoyed or impatient at any point. I really appreciated how she handled how he was behaving. I know he was scared (he's previously had some traumatic - to him - dental procedures and he definitely remembers everything) and maybe she recognized it, too. Whatever it was, it was greatly appreciated and I'm so glad my son had a great experience today!

By far, the entire crew at Smiles by Design is the most pleasant dental staff I've visited. Everyone from reception to the hygienist to Dr. Schraw is professional, friendly, and efficient. My son's first dentist visit was with Dr. Schraw. We thought about taking him to a specialized pediatric only practice for his first visit, just to make sure we wasn't scared off. We ultimately decided to go to Dr. Schraw based on neighborhood word of mouth from other parents. My son loved the experience (it was a pretty low key visit with lots of fun distractions just to make it enjoyable for him). He was talking about it for days. The billing/insurance process has been very smooth for me. For me, I clearly understood the total fees and our estimated financial responsibility for our insurance plan. That's about as good as it gets for the chaos that is medical billing. The only comment I've given to Dr. Schraw before is I wish she had the Prophy-Jet in her office. It's a very cool machine that "sand blasts" your teeth with baking soda. I had a crazy expensive dentist in NYC on Central Park West that used the Prophy... I'm not sure how much it really helped overall, but, it left your teeth feeling amazingly clean afterwards. UPDATE: turns out Dr. Schraw does have a prophy-jet! According to Mandi, the hygienists typically only use it for patients with significant build-up. However, you can request it during your cleaning. This is one dentist I'll be happy to see every six months.
