From 1586 until 1887 the towers were used as a prison for nobles.You cannot miss it if you're staying here, so you might as well indulge, climb, and take in all of the views. Keep in mind, as with most places in Spain, they are closed during peak hours during lunch. Otherwise, enjoy and immerse yourself in the history.

Wonderfully preserved, gothic motifs well visible from the street level. Normally you should be able to climb those, but in the summer 2021 when we visited, they were closed for the visitors-couldn't tell if that was covid related or just wrong time of the day. Anyway, they made a quite impression. It was very easy to visualize how visitors were addressed from top of the gate. It is a must if you are in Valencia!

Above ground people go about their daily business unbeknownst that right under their feet is a…read moredifferent world chockablock of a myriad of different underground spaces that never see the light of day: cavities, tunnels, crypts, osaries, bunkers and caves. I have always been fascinated with these spaces and every time I discover that a place I am visiting has such a space open to the public I jump at the chance of stepping down into the abyss. The caves here in Requena date from the Moorish period circa 12th - 13th Century and used to be private caves belonging to dwellings and public buildings in what is now the Main Square until 17th Century. They were long forgotten until they were rediscovered in the 70s, emptied out and intercommunicated via tunnels; you can still see many of the original openings that were sealed off up above. These caves remind me a lot of the underground private caves that are still open and used by the inhabitants of my village in the neighbouring province of Cuenca; in fact Requena used to belong to Cuenca until 1851 so it's not surprising that these caves also exist here. The entrance fee of 4€ includes either a guided tour or an audio guide that explains the different functions of these underground spaces including a granary, silo, water well, ossuary belonging to the Iglesia del Salvador and wine cellar filled with large earthenware jars known as tinajas. If you are a fan of caves you won't be disappointed and if not you could always come on down just to escape the sweltering heat up above during the summer months as the temperature in these caves is around 15ºc all year round.
