It covers over 900,000 square feet of green space, not far from city hall. This park, the lung of the city center, is a large, beautiful and quiet natural space that hundreds of people, of all generations, appreciate and enjoy daily. For centuries it was property of the successive Marquises of Ferrera, forming part of the palace estate of the same name. The Avilés City Council acquired it for public use, and it was inaugurated by King Juan Carlos I in May 1976. It is divided into two clearly differentiated parts: the "English style" park and the "French Garden". The first combines open meadow spaces, an aquatic pond and wooded areas with centuries-old specimens of yews, cedars, pines, oaks, birches, chestnut trees, etc. The second has all the elements that define a palatial garden: trees, pergolas, fountains and unique boxwood layouts configuring the flower beds. The park is equipped with lots of benches to sit, a playground, signposted and technically equipped areas for sports exercise, including gymnastic equipment, newspaper library, musical pavilion, environmental classroom, public bathrooms, etc. It opens at 7:00 a.m. and closes at 11:00 p.m., with five entrances: through Galiana, Rivero, Cervantes, del Marqués streets and through the lobby of the Municipal House of Culture.

The beach itself is very nice, but also the woods backing the beach is a nice area for people who prefers some cool shade and some quiet. There is plenty of free parking all along the way, but keep in mind that in high season they still fill up fast! There's a bunch of restaurants to fill your hungry stomach. Also bathroom / shower facilities. And then the part we liked best: A nice boardwalk all along the beach. It goes on for miles. Dogs are also allowed on there. Perfect for folks who need some walks like us. Loved it.

The area is all Non Smoking, which is great.... There are lots of benches, most of them with awnings to protect people from the sun. Absolutely my favorite beach in Asturias. Every beach in Asturias is different, but this is…read moreentirely unique and stunning. Happily, it's something of a secret amongst locals. It's also kind of remote and requires a bit of a hike to get to. So generally you don't have to share the beach with very many people... you may even have the beach to yourself. Even if you aren't a beach goer, it's worth it to make the trek to the Beach of Silence just for the view from above. The Playa del Silencio is a slender crescent of sand at the foot of high, high cliffs. Hence, it does require a trek to get down to. If you do plan to sun bathe in tranquility, just take a snack and a towel. Don't bother carrying a chair or a bunch of stuff, you'll end up regretting it on the walk down. Also, leave the kids behind. This is a beach people visit with solitude in mind. The trek from the parking lot is kind of long as well. What's neat is the walk takes you through a eucalyptus forest which smells amazing.
