Wow, I really can't believe there isn't a Yelp entry for Mieres' famous cider square. The Plaza de Requejo/Requexu is known throughout all of Asturias for it's amazing food and mind blowing fermented cider. Asturian cider is known for getting you plastered FAST and giving you a phenominal hangover even faster. It's very much of an acquired taste, but once you're hooked, you'll be sad to learn there is no substitute anywhere in the world. It's entirely unique and the Plaza Requejo is the best place to tie one on whilst enjoying incredible homestyle cooking. The Cider Square is nestled at the edge of Mieres at the foot of the mountain and the banks of the river. The cathedral is also visible from the historic plaza, where locals congregate to share "sidra" in the traditional manner. The beverage is decanted from high in the air into a communal cup that is held low by the knees. Hence, the ample tables that populate the plaza are the best place to enjoy the cider. But, rain is frequent in Asturias, so most of the many restaurants in the square have sawdust floors. I highly recommend visitors to the region make an effort to visit the Cider Square. The train station is conveniently located less than a mile away, which is convenient, since I promise you'll be too plastered to drive. read more
