They got to know my son (both through their extensive testing, and also by working so closely with him one on one) and due to their, and his, hard work he finally broke through a number of issues he'd be struggling with when it came to reading. No amount "regular tutors" were going to help our daughters achievements in the way that Northwest Reading clinic was able to. She progressed significantly in the Time that she worked with Northwest Reading clinic, and we will be doing another few months this summer again to help her further progress. This area consists of twelve acres of gardening, orchard and teaching space that partners with Portland Parks, PSU, OSU and Portland Public Schools. They grow and harvest organic produce that goes to the Portland community, and they teach language arts, science, and social studies to sixth graders from the neighboring Lane Middle School with a gardening focus. It appears very well organized and they have volunteering opportunities, for anyone looking to do a little gardening and learn a bit in the process. I walked out with a bag of chard just for stopping in at the right time. Can't think of what I'll do with it, but I'm thrilled to take a piece of this wonderland home with me, along with a cool new volunteering opportunity to add to my list!

I've had the opportunity to take one of their classes, Voluntary Simplicity, and my husband has delved into this deeper and taken a few more (Healthy Children - Healthy Planet and Choices for Sustainable Living). Pretty cool stuff. The best way to take the course is with a group and in both of our cases, we did it through our companies. Since it is discussion based, it is a great way to connect with co-workers, neighbors, a church group, etc. You read their course materials ahead of time then discuss with the group how this relates to your life. Am I a perfect practitioner of their ideals? Of course not. I do like to shop and drive my (fuel efficient) SUV around the 'burbs, so it is pretty difficult. What the course did do was raise my consciousness and I try to make more informed decisions and buy locally whenever I can as well as compost, reduce, reuse and recycle. I've also wanted to host one of their eco-parties, but always chicken out. A friend did this a few years back and said it was fun and they were very non-judgmental.
