I pop in about once a month to browse and shop . I'm slowly becoming uninterested in this Platos . Today I went in and noticed three shirts and two pants I was interested in had stains on them . One was a bleach stain and another head paint stains - so I'm not talking make up from a try on . I also noticed a pair of leggings I returned after noticing there was a hole in the crotch were back on the rack ! There is a huge selection which is great but I feel like much of it is now outdated and on top of that the racks are so jam packed it's difficult to look through the clothes . So many bathing suits and "odds and ends" stuff are just piled together . I'll continue to give it some more tries for now . it used to be a favorite place of mine to shop and it's sad to see the way it's going . read more

I went in today and it was busy. The young lady said they were backed up to come before 9pm. I came back at 8:30pm and had to wait about 10 min. There were 3 ppl working. 1ee was on the floor and the other looked like she was new. And the other young lady running the show was very overwhelmed. When I told her which one was my basket she said she was gonna have a breakdown ran to the back and called a manager, because she had not even looked at my baskets yet. She came about 7 minutes later and went straight to the back again. This poor young lady looked like she had it. I understand having overwhelming days and not having a supportive staff helping. I do not blame this young lady, but management on the other hand for scheduling 1 experience employee with 2 employees who either just started or were absolutely no help whatsoever. I'm sorry you had a horrible experience day young lady. And I hope management does not pair you with new staff or rather unreliable personnel again. read more

Unprofessional business procedures. Many of us that have been around long enough, know what professional and unprofessional customer service looks like. Yes, sometimes you can see through the fake "hi how are you" but at least they acknowledge you. You're there to shop, not make friends. You do your shopping and you leave. But let's get to the other part of their business, purchasing customer's clothing and shoes. Please note, this is for the Valparaiso location. If you are thinking of taking your items to this location to sell, please take these few things into consideration. They will not purchase all of your items. Even if they are new. Now this is understandable because they are a business. They are there to make money, not lose it. From my experience they will take maybe 1 item out of 30. Possibly not even that. It's all based on who the fashion expert is that day. **Also remember you listen carefully to their enthusiastic speech about what they are looking for before you select you items to bring in. They are not concerned about your time. If you think you are going to have your items looked at while you shop and completed, you're wrong. You will wait hours. But don't worry, they will text you when they are finished. This is a very nice convenience so you can plan. Except when they don't text. If they don't text, they will kindly call you 15 minutes before they close to remind you. Now, no matter where you are or what you're doing you need to get there. If you don't they also kindly remind you that your money will be converted to store credit. I drove the 15 minutes it takes me to get there. With tons of flipped greetings, she handed back my bag of items and told me they didn't need any of my items. This was a waste of my time and energy. If you are looking to sell any times at this location, I would avoid it. Save yourself the time and donate it to Goodwill down the street. Ideas: Management should look into better standard operating procedures for the future. Possibly hire someone who just handles incoming items. Be honest and realistic with time. A phone call 15 minutes before closing is unrealistic and unfair to your customers who took the time to come to your store. read more

This is honestly one of the worst Plato's Closets in the country. How do I know that? I've been to stores in at least 6 different states and sold there as well. This store is chaotic and a claustrophobic's nightmare. As a shopper, nearly everything is SheIn quality or looks like a knockoff. As a seller, it's ridiculous... don't even bother. I've brought them brand new with tags still on Free People, Levi's, Frye boots, Lululemon, Zara, etc and they haven't taken it. It's actually kind of funny. Now, the most recent experience I had with I assume is a new employee because I've never seen her before was the older lady they have working. She first was in hysterics I asked to borrow a bag to put my stuff in since they limited buys to 20 items the day I brought a tote in... literally demanded I go dump my clothes in my truck and "bring the bag RIGHT back. I can't have people stealing that." ??? Okay, it's a bag... relax. Then she is being absolutely ridiculous over her rehearsed speech on brands that could be dupes and the trouble you can get in for selling them. I laughed (because it was honestly funny how serious she was about this topic while my law enforcement husband was waiting outside for me) and I said "okay! but no, I'm not selling any of those brands today!" after she listed brands such as Nike, etc and got upset and said "well, it's not *just* those brands!!! There's Patagonia, blah blah blah" okay again, relax. I'm not selling any of those brands and I'm certainly not selling you dupes, which I told her. She was on one and quite frankly was really rude in how she was going about the process with sellers and their buys. You can't go accusing people of things and expect them to want to do business with you. read more

They always have a great selection to choose from and I always find something I love and often spend more money than I planned. I'm not a huge fan of the staff. Iv been going here for years and the staff is always Teen/early 20s girls that aren't very friendly or lack good service skill. This doesn't steer me away from the store, but I always feel uncomfortable when needing to interact with a staff member. I personally have not had good experience selling to them. Iv brought in BRAND NEW things and were told they were "outdated." On two separate occasions. They were clearly not outdated, and I feel the staff is bias of their own style so it's hit and miss depending on who goes through your clothes. Which isn't a big deal, but wish it was a little less bias. read more

An employee just accused me of purposefully brining in fake air jordan retro 7s. She said their Authenticator could not authenticate the Jordan's. I thought that meant an Authenticator was not here so I asked if I should bring them back another day. She then clarified and said they are fake and said really loud it is actually illegal to try to sell fake Jordan's with an extreme attitude with a store full of people. How do you say anything back to this without looking even more guilty so I just kept my mouth shut. This is Plato's closet I don't think they hire a real shoe authenticator. I can only assume it's another employee who is a self proclaimed sneaker head or even worse an app. I will be bring these shoes in to Nike themselves and come back. I'm super petty and very insecure about what people think and because of that Im unable to allow your employees to even think/assume I'm doing something wrong. So I will be coming back to this location ,WITH verification, to let that employee know she was dead wrong and rude. Even then with proof I will not sell my shoes as I don't need your money. this place is a JOKE. NEVER again will I ever step foot in Platos closet in Valpo. I brought in a bag of clothes including Victoria's Secret leggings and a pair of Crocs that they wouldn't take because they're "older than 18 months." Since when are Crocs older than 18 months?! Didn't even look at the items I brought in (I knew what was on the top of the bag and they were still on top, in the same order and folded the way I had them folded) and told me they're outdated. I had a couple bags worth of Vans, Nike, American Eagle and Victoria Secret clothes and they didn't take a single thing. I took a bunch of new primarily brand name clothes, some I have never ever even worn there. NEW Hollister jeans, shorts, skirts, all in perfect condition. One of those button-up velvet skirts you see EVERYONE wearing. The majority of the stuff I brought was bought around June-August OF 2019. They took none of it and tried to tell me it was "out of style" even though it was purchased AT THE MALL LESS THAN A YEAR AGO. There were also a lot of clothes on the racks much older and in much worse condition than ANY of mine were in. I don't even feel like they actually looked through all the stuff as I brought two garbage bags full and they were done going through them in 40 minutes. AMAZING! Plato's Closet of Valparaiso gives you TOP DOLLAR for your clothing! I dropped off clothes around 4 PM and came back at the end of the night...even though they said they had 10 people's stuff to go through ahead of me, they were able to go through my stuff THE SAME DAY. They gave me FIVES TIMES the amount I was expecting! And they were super nice and helpful as well! So glad I decided to sell my stuff to them! Love this store and missed coming here while I had moved away. Now that I am back it's actually improved a lot more since last year! The variety of clothes has increased and I have found something to buy every time I've gone in. I've sold a couple times to them and have received a fair amount for the items that were sold to them. This place is not a good place to shop. They have old styles and they don't buy anything that is in style. When you walk around the store you will see things that look like they are from 2002 and when you take new clothes in they will not take it. I will no longer be giving my business here. The staff is very rude and the clothes on the rack is hard to even look at. Merrillville platos closet is much cleaner and nicer and i will be gladly driving the 30 mins to that store instead of this one. read more

this palce has no customer service and very unprofessional and is racist and discriminates people. i was their today 2/2/2023 around 11:40 am and i run my own business in valparaiso and needed to purchase a pair of jeans becase i had a meeting to attend to and it was the closets place for me and entered to the place to the jean section it's very close to the exit by the metal detecto and when i picked a pair of jeans and walked towards the cashier to pay i passed by the metal detectors and when i got to the cashier she said i can't sale this jeans to you because something is wrong with the tag okay i went back to find another pair and when i was going to pay she asked me for my id though it's not commend to ask for an id to buy a pair of jeans but ok i gave her my drivers license and for some reason my card got declined and she said something is wrong with the system let me go get someone to help with the system and i was waiting when she came back i gave her my credit card and she said the computer is still not working and next thing you know a police officer was next to me and said what's going on are you trying to steal a pair of jeans. i explained to the police officer what happened and how the metal detector was beeping and the officer took me outside of the store and i explained to him again and said check the camaras and he said no they wanted me to sign a paper that i could't come back to the store i refused and i didn't signed it because i didn't do anything wrong then when the officer ran my plates and saw my company truck ans saw i had a clean record he said there was no need to sign the paper but not to come back because the cashier didn't want to see me again i wasn't disrespectful to her or trying to steal a pair of jeans. i think she was racist because i am a latino if any of my emplyees acted like she did i would fire them because people like her would affect my business. i hope that management takes action and takes care of thier customers. don't judge a book by it's cover. read more

So disappointed with the selection, especially considering it's a college town. I have been to several Plato's locations and have never seen a location with such a horrible variety of sizes. I normally wear a size 7/8 jean and a size medium or large top; they had only 3-5 pairs of jeans in the whole store in my size. Here's the trick... if you have clothes that are in the larger sizes, bring them in and get some cash or credit for them because they definitely need it! If you're shopping for anything larger than a 5/6 pant or a medium top, don't get your hopes up. read more

So I took in a bunch of name brand plus size cloths in almost brand new condition and they didn't take ANY of them. I waited alll day for them to "get to my stuff". And they had maybe 2 other people in front of me. They never have any plus size cloths even tho a lot of plus size cloths are offered. It's extremely over priced. Like for a pair of under armor or pink leggings or shirt your paying like $30 for them when you could just go to the store and buy them brand new. Also the staff is AWFUL if you are older or plus size they don't think you should shop there and they don't care. So who ever runs the social Media pages is extremely rude they try to advertise their cloths when you go to ask about the size it's always smalls and cloths that would fit the staff they are always so rude when answering you when you ask what size or price. They will say well just come and see it and they still don't answer the question. I'm definitely driving the extra distance to merrillville and Lafayette. I absolutely do not recommend shopping here. read more

Platos Closet is the worst customer service I have ever experienced, waiting an hour for them to quote examine my shoes that I have worn only a couple times and then saying that they are to worn out. When I mentioned that they were in perfect condition and had barely been worn the person at the front desk was very rude and condescending. Finally after I got over all of that I wanted to buy new shoes but had no money(because they wouldn't accept my shoes) so I asked if they could hold them for 1 day, I get there the next day and they are not there. I brought in a decent sized bag with at least 20 items and they told me it would take an hour...I came back after an hour had passed and they said it would be another 45 minutes. I was very annoyed by this, yet I waited for them to look through my clothes, when they finished they said they would buy one item and offer me $2.50. I should have taken the item back, but yet I signed the receipt and took the money. I am an irate customer and will never again sell or buy from Valpo's Plato's Closet. This place was the biggest waste of time. I drove 25 minutes one way and was told it would be an hour/ hour and a half wait to look through my items. I left my stuff and went home. I came back 2 HOURS later and was told it would be another hour and a half. I spent nearly 2 hours of my time driving there and back, TWICE, and didn't even get my clothes looked through. Very disappointed. They told me it'd be two hours. Which is fine. But i came back in about an hour and a half and figured id look around if they werent finished yet. I brought two laundry baskets of very neatly folded clothes. They did not know i was there when they "went through" my stuff. But I literally watched them take two items off the top, Kept them and then grab the top layer of folded clothes, unfold them and throw them back on top so it looked like they went through it. So i waited a bit then went up to the counter and the very rude boy working said in a snippy tone "we found two things, i can give u $3.40 for them. Your baskets are over there. " so rude! 1) they didn't even go through my shit! 2) they didn't give me shit for money and 3) the kid was rude af. And almost all the stuff in there was brand new with tags still on. Their loss. i highly recommend ANY SECOND HAND STORE OVER PLATOS. the staff are so disrespectful! I actually witnessed the the young boy looking over my clothes I was trying to sell, MAKING FUN of my clothes with his co-worker! keep in mind there were many clothes i was trying to sell, they finished with picking three items and offering UNDER $5! I didn't bring in any non-name brand clothes or anything with stains, yet they said they couldn't buy any of it because it was "out of style", IF ONLY YOU SAW WHAT THEY WERE SELLING. I have personally bought clothes with stains on it from them, so what exactly are they thinking? They are scamming all of these young people into selling their clothes for way under price, i would actually say to give them to the goodwill and make someone's day better rather than offering your clothes to platos closet! The staff should be more put together, playing the role of a good secondhand retail store means more than just posting a bunch of photos on instagram. Not to mention; half of the things on their instagram aren't even in the store, just one "outfit" is in the front on display as "as seen on ig" After asking for help twice i realized this SAME young man looking over my clothes was ON THE PHONE! (no this was not with a manager, it was more than obvious it was with a friend) after not receiving the help i had asked for i decided to just look around and wait for a different employee to help me. a young woman about 20 minutes later walked out of the back, i asked her for help and she also ignored my request. i then decided to just leave, which ended in me seeing the same girl i had just asked for help smoking on the side of the building. THESE TEENAGE WORKERS ARE SETTING THE EXAMPLE FOR THESE YOUNG TWEENS AND TEENS AND THEY ARE SHOWING THIS PUBLICLY FOR THEIR SHOPPERS TO SEE!
