When our carbon monoxide detector started beeping, we changed the batteries. Two days later, it began to beep again. My husband told me about all of this while I was at work, and I didn't want to come home to a dead dog or husband, so I asked him to call the non-emergency number.
Upon calling the non-emergency number, he was instructed to call 911. Reluctantly, he did. They said they were on their way. The nearest fire house is about ONE mile away.
My husband waited outside with the dog, and saw a fire truck nearing. They turned down the wrong street. He saw them come back up the street and then proceed south on the main road - the opposite direction of our home.
He then got a phone call from dispatch. They told him they couldn't find our house!
Our house is not the easiest to find since we are on a main road with 45 MPH traffic. But...shouldn't police and fire have the most sophisticated GPS available? Or at least the Google Maps app on their phones? Even the Vita Bella pizza boy found our house in a snow storm!
When they finally arrived, they explained that our address is difficult to read (black numbers on brown brick) and said we should paint it white. Okay, makes sense, but it's still unnerving that the fire department had trouble finding our home. They later told my husband something like, "if it was a real fire, we'd have found it." Sooo...basically you're saying that you won't be able to find my house unless there is smoke BILLOWING from the roof?
We replaced an expired carbon monoxide detector, and the firefighters were very nice and told us we did what we were supposed to do.
But really, PFPD? I hope we never have a *real* emergency. read more
