This was the meetup spot for our food tour and that certainly made it easy. The plaza currently has a Christmas tree vendor taking up much of the space but there is also a pretty fountain (drained for the season) and a public toilet.
Place d'Austerlitz is named to honor the victory over the Russians and Austrians at Austerlitz in December 1805. It was originally built in 1771 as Place Dauphine but the name was changed in 1837.
There is also a pretty cool three-dimensional relief map of the city here which out tour guide used to point out some of the highlights and the route that we would be taking around for our food tour. It is called Point de convergence and inaugurated in 2012.
Cafes, coffee shops, shaded trees, restaurants. It's a lovely spot.
Porte de l'Hôpital tram station (lines A and D) is not far away.
