Pizzeria La Perla! Here's what I thought when I first saw this place from the outside...
*************************************************************************************************
Wise G.: "They got me! They got me!"
Tutti C.: "Henry, shut the door! Shut the door!"
Henry H. 'That was the 1st I had seen anyone get shot...'
Tutti C.: "Can't have that in here! Jesus Christ Henry, I can't have that in this joint!"
Henry H. 'I remember feeling bad for the guy, but then I remember the feeling maybe Tutti was right...I knew Pauli didn't want anyone dying in the building'
Tutti C.: "You're a real jerk Henry! You wasted 8 f**king aprons on this guy, I don't what the hell is wrong with you, I gotta toughen this kid up!"

90% of you tourists will dismiss this cheap looking joint and eat at some fancy schmancy tourist-packed restaurant nearby, such as Casa Mia, Da Alberto, or Santa Marina. Yes, they had menus in English, but we were only the tourists at La Perla, the 4-5 other tables were all speaking Italian, and there was a constant flow of local Venetians getting pizzas to go(aka "take away" in Europe).
The food wasn't mindblowing, and the atmosphere was low key. But it was good, solid, simple, Italian home-style cooking at very reasonable prices:
7 euro Gnocchi in tomato sauce...simple, and yum!
4 euro grilled Zuchinni...simple, and yum! Though the portion could have been bigger.
13 euro Rosemary steak...big and yum! I think it was 12oz worth.
6 euro mezzo(half) liter of red house wine...the BEST wine I drank during my 2 week Italy vacay!
4 euro Panacotta with chocolate syrup...simple and yum!
4 euro Grappa apertif...good, strong, and it was about 2.5 shots worth! O_o
It was our last night in Italy, after dinner I was packing up and realized I left my $600 camera there! I ran back, the restaurant was closed! But luckily our waiter was still there eating a late night dinner, smiled, and handed me my camera bag! I was sorry I had no cash on me to give him an extra tip :(
The only memorable restaurant in Venice...I'll have to try the pizza next time! :D
(BTW: The movie reference is "Goodfellas" The manager/owner reminded me of Pauli or Tutti, and our waiter reminded me of young Henry.) read more
