This cast a pall over the entire meals. Those of us with food ate reluctantly whilst our friends glumly twiddled their thumbs, by the time their food arrived, they were of a mind to eat it quickly so we could all leave as soon as possible.
When we asked to waiter to explain this, he muttered something about there being a problem with the cooking, which was clearly a lie, because the tow meals were completely different, pasta and risotto so I cannot believe that a chef would have messed up both dishes simultaneously. Conveniently, this was also the point in the evening when the waiter claimed not to know English, which hadn't been an issue up to this point. Said English miraculously returned when it came to asking us to pay up at the end.
When we asked for the bill, we had to wait a long time to flag the waiter down, until many other patrons had left and we were virtually alone in the restaurant. The waited busied himself with laying tables for a later service in full view of us. I believed he was delaying the inevitable, because he knew we would have something to say about the quality of service in the restaurant.
Needless to say, we left no tip, and even tried to negotiate a discount as our evening had been ruined. The waiter refused this, using his miraculously returned English skills, and even had the audacity to attempt to charge us for tap water, which had not appeared on the original bill, and then remove this additional charge to pacify us. We were not amused.
Avoid this restaurant like the plague. There's a lovely Greek place (Poseidon) on the other side of the square which serves fantastic great value food, and has amazing staff who shake your hand on the way it, hang your coat up for you and give you a complimentary measure of Ouzo at the end of your meal. Please go there instead!
