Our experience at Pizza Papalis in Taylor MI was great! The service was wonderful and the food was great! My husband and I had the small Chicago-style deep dish VIP pizza. Looking at the reviews, it's seems like people LOVE this place, or HATE it. We went with our 2 kids last Friday night, and we LOVED it. Even though it was 6 on a Friday night, we were seated immediately. Big plus when you have 2 small children. Our server was Erin, and she was great. Friendly to the kids, helpful in explaining the menu to us newbies, gave honest feedback when we asked, and was overall helpful but not overbearing. My husband mentioned that he wished we could have her as a server wherever we went out lol. Food was great. The kids got to make their own pizza, which was not only a unique attraction for them, but it kept them distracted and occupied while our pizza was making - the deep dish pizzas take 40 mins. We were prepared for that wait, having had Chicago style pizza in Chicago on many occasions, so that wasn't a problem for us. They have crayons and activity sheets for the kids as expected as well, so we played lots of tic tac toe lol. We ordered breadsticks and a deep dish cheese pizza, and we were impressed. I really miss the Greektown location.I never had problems. I called in Thomas the manager said bring it back and he would credit my account. Chicken was delicious! My daughter ate so many of them. I had the mostaccoli, cooked to perfection, bread sticks are decent! And my soup came cold. Overall it was good. I'll just save my soup for later and heat it up on the stove. The portions are giant. And the price was fairly good. read more

Aside from the $2.25 16oz PBRs, this place sucks. Went to the Detroit location first and it was good, Dearborn location is awful, and this one is even worse. Considering the fact that its a chain restaurant, you would think the pizza would taste the same at every location, but that's not the case... If you've ever tried Sportsmans pizza in Wyandotte, I'm sure you know how greasy their pepperoni rolls are... multiply that by 10 and that's how much grease you get at here. Its so bad. I got a calzone this time and the grease was literally pouring out of it as I cut it. As for the building... its very "meh." Everything in it looks like hand-me-downs. The menus were falling apart and looked about 10 years old. The wood block that sits on the table for pizza had old pizza sauce all crusted up on it. The silverware was dirty, even the plates were outdated and used. This is the best antipasto salad - always fresh and the dressing is perfect. My favorite is the thin crust pizza. Nobody does a good thin crust around here except Pizza Papalis. First time ever coming to a Pizzapapolis but was pleasantly surprised. The outside was kind of quaint and had me feeling eerie about it but once inside the set up is very nice. Meatballs for an app were really good but you only get 4 small meatballs. Breadsticks were different, kind of had the consistency of a soft pretzel if you ask me. We got the Chicago style deep dish with pepperoni and it took around 40 minutes to arrive but was worth the wait. All the food came out piping hot and was delicious. I love their pizza sauce!!! My wife, daughter, and I stopped in on Sunday. Aesthetically, the place is quite nice. A very nice, open floor plan. Now for the pizza. Due to my gastric sleeve surgery, bread screws with my appetite. So pizza, which I love, isn't on the menu as it once was. So when I decide to treat myself, It almost always has to be super thin crust. Which generally makes the pizza suck. Enter our server, Mandy. I explained my dough concerns to her, and told her we'd need a couple of minutes to figure out what we wanted. Mandy was so thoughtful, without even saying anything to us, she went to the kitchen to see if the chef could accommodate my thin crust dreams. She returned to our table to explain that the chef would be more than happy to make us a pie that would use less dough so I could actually enjoy some pizza. We ordered the Papalis Gourmet. When it came out, it was beautiful!! Thin crust pizza that tasted amazing!!! I was so happy to get to enjoy some pizza that wouldn't fill me up on dough alone!!! It was super cheesy, and came with plenty of toppings. The chicken on the pizza was great! Shredded AND chunky pieces. The perfect amount of spinach. Not overpowering. We omitted the black olives, because BLACK OLIVES ARE THE DEVIL!!! LOL The sauce is delicious. Savory and very flavorful. I don't have to drive downtown for Pizza Papalis anymore. I have my pizza spot in Taylor. I also learned that this location is franchised from the Detroit location. So this place is family owned. They make the same pies as they do downtown. She could have simply told me "this is how thick our pizza is" and left it at that. My wife, daughter and I had a perfect experience at Pizza Papalis. Mandy put our experience over the top. She spoke SO highly of the business, staff, AND the owner. I'll start by saying that I have been a regular customer of Pizza Papalis for at least ten years. It seems like I have been watching the price of these pizzas increase steadily, which is fine with me as long as I am steadily receiving the same product. Unfortunately that is not the case. The price is increasing and the pizza seems to be getting smaller and smaller. The Chicago style anyway. I took a party of ten in on Halloween night after Trick or Treating. Everyone was hungry. We ordered two Chicago style deep dish pizzas with pepperoni, one thin crust with pepperoni, and 30 chicken wings. The wings were on special for 60¢ each. The wings were fine. The thin crust pizza was as expected. But the two Chicago style pizzas were visibly off when they arrived at the table. Before we even served the first slice I asked the waitress if the pizzas looked normal to her. I explained that these looked nothing like what I'm used to being served. Her response was, "I don't know, I have only been working here about two weeks. But let me know if they don't taste right because the kitchen has been off tonight." I was hoping maybe that she would send a manager over but I didn't request it. I looked around to try to identify someone who may be a manager but there was nobody in the floor that looked the part. They must have been short handed and whoever was the manager must have also been acting as a server or simply just stayed out of site. The place was pretty empty so there I don't see why a manger wouldn't have stopped by our table to check in. That seems the norm at restaurants these days anyway. Now we ordered a lot of pizza. We routinely do that for two reasons. First the deep dish takes 45 minutes to bake usually. So if we don't have enough it's not like we can simply order another. Second, we like to have one to take home and heat up another night. And usually we have a whole pie left to take home as we did tonight. But I almost left that pizza on the table at the restaurant because those two Chicago style pizzas were terrible. A pizza that I once was happy to pay $27.95 for each, I would now gladly trade for a $5 Hot N Ready. This will likely be our last visit to Pizza Papalis. I don't like leaving one star reviews. I took my dad there for his birthday this year as a little throwback to remembering that I took him out there years ago when this pizzeria used to be opened on Michigan Avenue back then, because both of those locations have the same owner, but just moved locations. A couple of my friends came up to visit from Texas. We decided to give this place a shot (Taylor, MI location). It was near their hotel. I was expecting it to be good but not great. I was dead wrong. I've been to Chicago several times and would still choose Pizzapapalis deep dish. Authentic deep dish anywhere takes about 40 minutes, sometimes longer, so it's great that they have an option to preorder your pizza so it's ready when you get there. If you're not into deep dish their menu is full of tons of other options. I love craft beer and their selection is amazing, tons of Michigan draft and bottles to choose from.
