The first is the quality pizza restaurant, where you can sit on a comfortable chair at a nice wooden table with cutlery, and enjoy a pizza that's been cooked in a traditional pizza oven, with a wide range of your favourite alcoholic or soft drinks. The second is a take-away/delivery only place, where you walk in, stand among a few fridges of drinks and ice cream, while you watch them build and cook your pizza. The first is stylish, the second is by comparison tacky. However, this place works. When I saw the name Wood Oven Pizza from the street I was assuming the first type. And overall that is the experience I had. Even though the interior of this place is half pleasant restaurant, half cheap delivery shop. This place has a full range of alcoholic drinks, as well as beer and wine. Now I may be incorrect but it seems when it comes to starters, this place only seems to do one starter. But what a starter. There is also only one size, ONE HUGE THIN piece of freshly cooked-to-order Turkish bread. This may be the only choice, but what a choice. This thin Turkish bread tasted amazing. I had it with beetroot dip (shame they don't have a several small dips mix option). I was then anticipating that the pizza would also have a similarly amazing tasting base. Unfortunately it didn't. It tasted good. And it had clearly been cooked in a quality pizza oven. But it wasn't the quality of pizza base that I've had in other restaurants with a traditional pizza oven. Service was friendly, very personable and considerate, these people genuinely care if you have an enjoyable meal. Unfinished food (including the large Turkish dipping bread) can be taken away in a take away box.

For entree I ordered the focaccia with pomodoro (tomato), anchovies and capers. I was expecting some tasteless slab of salty bread plied with a few toppings. Hardly. The focaccia was wafer thin, crispy to bite and filled with melted cheese. The tomato topping was amazing, appropriately accompanied with salty anchovies. A provincial dish that I will be coming back for. My pork parpadelle was also perfetto (yep, perfect). I loved the diversity of the rustic Italian dishes on the menu. Generous in proportion, lovingly prepared and a far cry from the 80s style Lygon St Italiano machine. Caruggi Is yet another surprising made in Geelong culinary treat. Excellent hospitality too. I really can't wait to return.
