It was a bit of a belated birthday lunch with my mum so we both started with a glass of fizz for £4. The drinks arrived promptly and thank god as I was parched and we order straight away from the set lunch menu - ready to get going on our afternoon shopping. My mum opted for the pate starter which looked tasty and I went for the mushroom fritter which was altogether different but tasty. Given we hadn't ordered anything too fussy it did take some time for both starters and mains to arrive which was tricky. The mains were delicious; chicken risotto which I opted to taste test for my Mum! Served with a whole chicken breast it was great value for money. Whereas I went for the fennel sausage served with roast potatoes and garlic mayo - again a very different choice given it was from the set menu. The sausage was full of flavour and with the nice addition of homemade garlic sauce meant the potatoes weren't to dry. Overall the service was great and the atmosphere relaxed - it did just seem to take that tad too long to get the food as it was a quiet day. Having said that we did have a busy day I can imagine this place being great for a long boozy lunch.

5 of us went here Saturday for lunch and I think I'd have been happier in McDonald's!…read more While the service wasn't particularly bad, it wasn't great either. The staff didn't even look at you while taking the necessary drink & food orders and we had a quite a wait for the food to arrive when the place was barely 'busy' Between the 5 of us we had- Cannelloni di coniglio e poro :-Rabbit & leek cannelloni with spinach, mascarpone & wild mushrooms Gnocchi di salami*:-Potato gnocchi, wild boar salami, rocket, red onions & crème fraiche Linguine con polpette:-Pork & beef meatballs, mozzarella, tomato & rosemary Caesar :-Roast chicken, Parma ham, cos lettuce, croutons & parmesan Con rosmarino - Garlic bread with rosemary None of the dishes were exactly hot and none of them blew us away with their presentation or flavour. The 'Ceasar salad' was all lettuce, croutons and dressing The Canelloni was tart tasting The Gnocchi was bland, unseasoned and has the worst excuse for 'salami' The meatballs were lacking seasoning and tasted like they we just cooked in a tin of tomatoes. The only thing which I was pleased with was the Garlic bread. @ £12.50 with a soft drink each I would have expected to have had a nicer lunch. Sadly, with the choice of restaurants competing for your business in Newcastle this place really needs to up its game.

Conveniently located in the Blue House Buildings at the top of Carrville High Street, Belmont Pizza…read moreHouse is the nicest pizza shop in Belmont/Carrville. The pizzas come in 10 12 and 14 sizes, the toppings are generous and the extras like chips, gravy, garlic sauce are really nice. The only problem with this pizza shop is that they are so popular! It can takes ages to get through to them on the phone, and sometimes delivery can take up to an hour. We've come to the conclusion it is sometimes quicker to go into the shop and place an order in person. The staff are friendly and we always get a nice welcome. Prices are very reasonable and well worth it!

Found this place using Qype Radar on a recent trip to Newcastle…read more This place is officially awesome. I love it. Rocked up and was immediately seated by friendly, attentive staff. The restaurant itself was nicely laid out and decorated. I was given two menus, one was the standard menu and the other was their "before 7:30pm" menu. I ordered a green salad, garlic bread and the carbonara. Interesting note on the pasta dishes, I could pick the type of pasta I wanted (fettucine, spaghetti, fusili, etc.) Nice touch. About 45 seconds after I ordered, my food arrived. Massive portions of pasta, a garlic bread the size of a dinner plate, and a solid green salad. The carbonara was outstanding, the garlic bread was just right. The only criticism I have is the asparagus in the salad was soggy. But other than that, outstanding. And check this out, this is the best part....so salad, huge bowl of pasta, massive garlic bread, and a soda.......£15. I know, right?! Unbelievable.

There is no doubt Portofino's is a stunning and beautiful restaurant and the food is delicious and…read morethe service is great and cost is reasonable but and I know that its quite a long restaurant and there's nowhere for the staff to roam around but to stand nearby opposite diners and watch them eat is quite uncomfortable and off-putting, for me anyway. Also I noticed that as the queue was beginning to grow, I was getting 'the look' and felt a bit pressured to give up my table which was fine as I was preparing to leave but I didn't appreciate the pressure. But I cant take away from the exceptional food and the building and decor is stunning and for that I would recommend Portofino's to others visiting Newcastle.

Cannot believe I have only just discovered this place! I went here with the girls last night as we…read morewere looking for somewhere cheap and cheerful seeing as it's not quite pay day and we had heard of the happy hour menu offering 2 courses for £8.95. I wasn't expecting such high quality and delicious food at the same time so I was pleasantly surprised! What a beautiful building inside-the roof is quite spectacular and makes this relatively small restaurant radiate grandness! The service was spot on too-very attentive staff who went the extra mile when they had run out of one of the options on their 'sweet of the day' happy hour menu and let us replace it with any other dessert for the same price! My only gripe would be there is nowhere to wait if your table isn't ready and so you end up huddled in the doorway. My friends ordered pasta dishes and I've never seen one of my friends actually finish every mouthful on her plate which was a good sign! I ordered the Pollo di Pancetta which was beautifully cooked with a lovely selection of vegetables. The red wine sauce for me was quite subtle and not as thick as I would have liked but certainly didn't take the shine off the superb quality of the food. For dessert all three of us opted for one of the cheesecakes. All I can say is......wow! I highly recommend this restaurant and wouldn't be deterred from eating here outside of happy hour neither as I think the quality is worth paying for! That said...what an ideal destination for food straight after work!

You know when you've been sightseeing and touring all day and you're really down for dinner and all…read morethe places you had bookmarked to eat at didn't impress your friends so you end up walking up and down the streets and find a restaurant that you all love? That was La Spaghettata :) The four of us went for dinner and were seated right away with menus. We all decided on pastas (Pasta cooked with vodka, fettuccine with flakes of smoked salmon, and gnocchi with peas) and one of us got baked salmon (which also came with pasta....carb party!). A calamari appetizer was ordered and although I didn't have any, it heard it was nice and light despite being fried. A number of waiters kept coming to our section and looking at us and we couldn't really figure out why until one of us asked us if we were ready for our main course (who would've thought! I thought it was cute). The food then came right away. For the prices paid for the pastas (7.50 pounds which is around 14 dollars), the portions were very very good; i was stuffed and couldn't finish mine! Also they're very generous with their own.....ask them for a glass of red wine and you'll get a full glass.....a bit odd lol. Also, all pastas and pizzas come with a salad but we didn't know until we finished out food (there's a self serve salad bar on the other side of the restaurant) This is probably a personal opinion, but there is nothing I love more than going to a restaurant that radiates with culture. Minus the mainstream music, the decorations and Italian waiters and cooks really did it for me. Everyone was so sweet and kind. Come and eat, you won't be disappointed. **Just for all my fellow carbaholics out there.........they have spaghetti pizza. YUP, you read that correctly. Pizza with spaghetti on top. Carbs galore!**
