How can I not review my favorite place to eat?? I was introduced to this place about 10 years ago in Jackson Heights Queens. This"mini chain" is a place you go with friends, family, significant etc.... Food is excellent! Service is great and the atmosphere is what makes you go back. The Bronx locale was needed. I had read about the hype about Pio Pio and was jealous (always the last to try the new stuff). I had eaten chicken in Peru and was excited to try this. First time I came to this location, I elected for take out. I ordered the matador meal and an extra side of maduros. The restaurant decor was ok but nothing fancy. As I waited for my order I looked around and saw the yellow walls and a few paintings. The tables have cloth and paper... As if I was going to eat crabs. Advice for first timers taking the subway: If you exit the 6 train (Cypress Avenue station) you will be on 138th street. Walk away from the highway (I-278). Pass the Iglesias de Dios (church of god) and at the intersection is Cypress Ave. Make a right (at some dry cleaners). You will pass a Pioneer supermarket, a "No 1 Wok" (that a bold claim) Chinese takeout spot and alas find Pio Pio. Remember to put on your best angry face (I think of my 401k performance or the New York Knicks), maintain a steady power walk, follow my directions and you won't feel like a wimpy gringo in the hood. Take out on the subway was a bad idea. As the wonderful aromas penetrated my nostrils, I wanted to rip the bag open and shovel bits into my mouth. The food was worth the wait. The chicken, married with the tostones, salad, rice, beans, salchipapas (chopped hot dogs and fries) and maduros were a winning combination. Good Food in South Bronx ! Whenever visiting friends in the Bronx we try and go to Pio Pio, which is usually packed. The food is wonderful, the service is attentive and the atmosphere was great. Disclaimer: If you're looking for a restaurant where you can either share a meal with 1 or 2 orders or if you're in the mood for "family style" plating for a large group. Recently, I came back to this Pio Pio location to enjoy dinner with a big group. There was plenty of parking right in front of the restaurant and it's located near a couple of major highways if you're traveling by car. Does it seem a bit out of place for this section of the Bronx? Absolutely, but I digress... Now, back to my experience, our group consisted of about 10 people and we ordered the following: - Matador Combo: This combo consisted of various plates including their famous rotisserie chicken (juicy/flavorful), yellow rice, red beans, tostones (twice fried plantains), salchipapas (fries with fried small pieces of sausage) and an avocado salad (with lettuce, cucumbers, & tomatoes). For two people enjoying a meal, this combo is PERFECT! If you go to Pio Pio one of the top recommended dishes is their famous chicken, which isn't dry or bland and that you can top off with their famous spicy green sauce. - Arroz Chaufa: This was like a fried rice dish which had rice, eggs, onions, and comes with the meat of your choice. We opted for chicken. - Lomo Saltado: Lomo saltada (or stirred-fried beef) consists of filet mignon strips, spices, red onions, parsley, peppers, tomatoes, french fries, and a side of white rice. Again, a great dish to share for two people and the beef was delicious! - Jalea: A seafood platter consisting of shrimp, calamari, and squid topped off with red onions, corn, spices, and sauce. Although this didn't come with a side, it was my go to for the night. I, personally, am a huge fan of seafood, especially when it's a mix of my faves! my second time around...the first time was a good time. food was on point and the speed they serve it is amazing..so i was doubtful that it was like this all the time. Well, it was actually faster than last time. the place was packed and still they managed to serve some delicious chicken with green spicy sauce ( secret sauce), rice, beans, salchipapas (french fired and fried mini-hotdogs, avocado salad, tostones, aka the Matador Meal plan and Peruvian beer for 3. all that was 48 us bucks.. thats not bad at all. The area where the place is is kind of iffy.. well not nice at all, but some times you got to take risk to get some good food . I used to love this place. Yeah the location isn't great but they do deliver and you can get takeout. I don't know where they started going so wrong. Their food is so inconsistent. I had to stop eating there because more often than not I found myself having to reheat chicken that looked weird and getting sick anyway. However the service is consistent. It's horrible. Look out because they will make up new policies. For example: they will give you dark meat when you ask for white because the kitchen has too much dark meat. Oh and they can charge you extra for this also. The customer is always wrong. This is why I'm not eating there anymore. I have been to Pio Pio at 3 locations: lower Manhattan, Queens, and in the Bronx. In my opinion, the one in the Bronx is the 2nd best, with Manhattan coming in 3rd (small and mediocre food) and the original Queens location coming in 1st (renovated & looks like a 5 star restaurant environment). The restaurant in the Bronx location is where I am a regular at because I live about 10 minutes (by car) from their location. My mom LOVES Pio Pio and is a big fan of their seafood combo. I personally love their chicken, green sauce, maduros, and avocado salad. Their red sangria (wine) is perfectly mixed with an assortment of fruit. I tend to get their Peruvian soda (Inca Cola) which is just their version of champagne cola, but it is delicious and has a smooth taste to it. My mom just has hot tea which I'm surprised they serve there. I'm not really a fan of their mini sausages and fries (to each their own I guess). I'm telling you though, anything on their menu tastes great when you mix their special green sauce to it! LOL The ambience to the restaurant is very nice and they have a very cultural theme there. The Spanish music they play is great as well. The neighborhood is not as bad as people have stated in these reviews. On the next block there are a bunch of townhouses and I guarantee you the people in this area are working class people and not stereotypical crackheads looking to rob any naive "gringos" or anyone that resembles that look! LOL So yes there is a Chinese Food Store next to Pio Pio and a ghetto looking bodega near that, but nothing that will cause any danger to anyone not from the area; so GET OVER IT and come through for a great dining experience... read more

They have some crazy good chicken here!!!! I tried the original Pio Pio way back in the 90's in Queens and their chicken and green sauce have not changed a bit. I had the lunch special. A quarter chicken, mixed salad with avocado and I chose rice and beans for my side. You get all that, plus a beverage for $9.50. The chicken is so juicy and flavorful. Please eat the skin. That is where all the flavor is. I like do douse my chicken with their green sauce. The green sauce is so good. It just adds even more flavor to the super flavorful chicken. Salad was really tasty and tangy. They could have used a salad spinner though for the lettuce. It was a little on the wet side. Beans were pretty decent as well. But if you add more of that green sauce to the beans, wow! It made the beans fantastic. If rice and beans aren't your thing, you can choose to stones, french fries, fried sweet plantains or fried yucca. Ok, it's time for a fantastic review of Pio Pio! I'm so enthusiastic because I just had lunch here today and it was awesome. The meals here are served family style - which I always enjoy. Their specialty is Peruvian chicken. We got the Matador Combo. First they brought out avocado & tomato salad. Next rice and beans, mmmm, then fried plantations with a garlic sauce. After this they brought out a plate of fries w/ slivers of sausage on top, which was a little strange but still really tasty. Finally, the Peruvian chicken breast was served which was so tender, juicy and well seasoned. This was all served with delicious cilantro/spicy sauce that was good on everything! This restaurant has several locations throughout the city which I plan to visit since I don't find myself in the Bronx too often. This outpost of Peruvian Pio Pio must be new, or incognito (not much info on Google), but it's a solid lunch choice in the area. It's rather upscale for the neighborhood-- very cute brick wall interior and lively music playing. The prices are a few bucks more than the Dominican place a few blocks away; the lunch special is $9.50 for basically the same amount of food. It is, however, served on a whimsical plate in a more restauranty environment. I got the special-- a quarter chicken and rice and beans along with a salad of ripe avocado, tomato, and other fixins for the table to share. The waiters speak enough English, and let you linger with no rush. The chicken was really good, the rice less so, but smother everything in their picante green sauce and you won't know the difference anyway. read more

I've never sat down for food but this location is SO efficient with take out orders. I've never stood there for more than half a hour even on a busy night. Typical order that two can share with tummies FULL and happy: - Tostones are smashed into monster sizes and provided with secret spicy sauce. - Half a chicken is always bangin' with taste, never burnt! - Salad comes with glistening garlic sauce. I am a FAN of Pio Pio, however this location is my least favorite. They are inconsistent with their yucca fries, mojo sauce, and even the special green sauce! Why?! They cut the yucca fries so thin you think you are eating hard french fries :( I am convinced that the 44th street location in Manhattan is by far the best and most consistent in terms of food - it is always delicious. What disappointed me the most was the lack of 'excitement' or variety in the shortened menu; lomo salteado, a fried seafood mix and like two other non appealing entrees. So long as you don't mind going to a somewhat frightening neighborhood, or you are from this neighborhood, this is a diamond in the rough! The decor and the feel of the restaurant is definitely one of a nice restaurant, despite it being right next to a greasy Chinese restaurant with the suspect name of NUMBER 1 WOK. The food is quality, and in large portions. The chicken was very succulent. Even white meat, which I care less for because of how dry it usually is, was moist and delicious! We also got the seafood platter, which is a HUGE amount of fried seafood. 5 of us went to eat, and we ordered one of the chicken combos and the seafood combos, as well as a plate of rice and beans (VERY delicious, btw), and a plate of sweet plantains, which was more food than we could finish, and we paid about 12-14 dollars per person! Very good place for sharing. I thoroughly enjoyed the avocado salad, and the fries were solid. It went SO well with the green sauce we used for fries rather than ketchup. I need more green sauce! The only thing is the location. I will definitely go to Pio Pio again, but next time I will be trekking to one of their Manhattan locations. read more

Next...driving past Cypress Avenue, saw the words Pio Pio. Perfect! Didn't even know the Bronx had a location! I've never been! So we went, just like that and said let's try it. Had a whole rotisserie chicken, with an Avocado salad and Tostones. The chicken was nice and tender. The salad was lightly dressed, and the tostones were huge (came with garlic sauce). Because we came from the Bronx Brewery, we didn't indulge further on alcohol, but the Sangria did look good. My lack of a fifth star was the price. $16 for a whole chicken. After deciding to try Pio Pio after hearing people rave about it, I was very disappointed. I received the wrong order and when I called they left me on hold for almost 20 mins. They even blamed the delivery guy and are taking it out of his pay when it was obviously not his fault. Totally unfair. After getting the right order, I was excited to try the mixed ceviche and their fruit ice cream and it was a total let down. The ceviche had more garlic then actual seafood and the ice cream did not have actual fruits. Not worth $70 for mediocre food which I can get at El Valle with better service. The matador combo is amazing and I love that they let you double up on white meat for an additional charge. The jalea is a must have! And when dining indoors, their sangria is amazing. I have tried pio pio in queens and in Manhattan but being in the Bronx, this is the one I visit most often. MMmmmm , MMmmmmm good! I recently ordered from here for lunch after driving by and noticing this wonderful jewel was situated in an area which was hard to see. I came to love Pio Pio after trying it out in Jackson Heights and OMG its still soooo amazing. The chicken was so flavorful, the green sauce is amazing and just ask for extra they give you 3 for $1 but hey for that price i'll get $5 worth anytime lol.... The food is good but the staff is very rude. Starting at the top with the Manager "Susana". This person does not know how to treat customers. She yells at the customers and is not polite at all. And she is the Manager of the place, at least that is what she said. If you come across her do not interact with her. Pio Pio should have some kind of training in customer service. read more
