The front room was filled, so the two of us had to proceed to the second area - which was more spacious. Long story short - I got the traditional mushroom soup with noodles and heavy cream, and an order of meat pierogies, baked. My companion got the cheese pierogies. Sorry to say the soup was bland - mushroom favor was weak. Microscopic bits of mushrooms in the broth, and pasta was cut into small squared, clearly cooked way ahead of time, and a handful was thrown in as the soup was warmed: it was all clumped together, cool in the inside, and raw-ish in taste. The pierogies were served six per order - decent size; nicely baked to a golden crisp finish. But the meat was minced so fine, that it had no texture, and no spices or flavors. And there we no condiments of any sort on the table. The traditional Polish meal I was hoping to enjoy was simply disappointing. The service was sloooow - not sure if it's cultural or only two servers for the two rooms of diners [and one of the servers was a trainee....] I literally got up and got the menus myself after about a 15-minute wait. The glass brought with water was dirty, with specks of something or other floating in the liquid. Had to wave down the waitress to get her attention, to get this fixed. As the food was served, the waitress would have to leave and return with the flatware after the plates were placed in front of us. Just a bizarre sequence. Cultural... or just lousy customer service?

I decided to go as traditional as possible and had the sour soup with egg and sausage. it is on the salty side but having had it a couple times have always found this to be the case. It was tasty and I'd recommend it. This with an ice cold beer is a delight! We got the dumplings to share with what i assume was stuffed with pork and served with bacon lardons. It was tasty enough. Not memorable but by no means unpleasant. I then tried the pork knuckle. the meat was very tender, served with cabbage, horseradish and bread. The bread was plain and not needed. Some fried potatoes with onion and herbs would have been much better with it and made the dish. Ask for this instead. my other half who was less adventurous had basically a pan fried piece of chicken and fries with cabbage. pretty much a chicken escalope and fries or if in germany a schnitzel mit pommes. it was what it was. Tasty bit nothing new or interesting unless you have never had one before. Still it was correctly cooked and if you are in the mood for this its not a bad thing to order. I'll still give it 4 stars as the service was good and everything was cooked right. It just didn't wow me but then this could just be the polish cuisine in general (although again I haven't had enough to make this judgement wither) so I wouldn't knock them as everything was done well.

I recently had the pleasure of being in Wrocław for business for a week, and was accompanied by a…read morevegan co-worker. Wrocław being a pretty hip town, there is no shortage of vegetarian and vegan options, yet Żyzna stands head and shoulders above them. Much of the vegan food in Poland is not in any way related to Polish food. We have lots of vegetarian options, but no vegan ones. So, when one sees vegan food in Poland it is typically SE-asian style. Nothing wrong with that, but it's pretty generic. Żyzna borrows much from foreign cuisines, but manages to infuse Polish flavor notes into the dishes, and that makes them stand out. We started with a great potato and white bean soup with marjoram and horseradish. The horseradish was an excellent touch, and ever so subtly tied the soup back to the Polish traditional żurek, or sourdough soup. For seconds, we had a quinoa-based dish that did a nice job of incorporating pickled beets and their brine, and little sprigs of dill, both of those being very classic Polish flavors. The other dish was a vegan risotto with black sesame, coconut flakes, and pea shoots. Also superb. Dessert was a lavender cake (not too heavy on the lavender) and a sublime chia seed pudding, and coffee with spelt milk. There is always a new soup of the day, and three main courses. Every week they rotate one of the mains, and it is always something seasonal. There is an assortment of desserts as well. Being a very small operation, they have a limited number of each of the mains, so it is quite possible that even early in the day they might be out of something. As an avowed meat eater, the highest praise I can give them is that this is really good food that just happens to be vegan. I would happily eat there again, and look forward to my next visit. The flavors are great, the service is friendly and low-key, and the food is expertly presented and priced very fairly. You owe it to yourself to go check Żyzna out.

Even our drinks seemed to be prepared with extra care and attention. Overall, there were just a few misunderstandings, but I think we could have simply asked more questions about our order to avoid them. Briefly, it was late evening. We couldn't decide where to have dinner. After a very long walk around the Old Town, it finally started to rain, and we happened to find ourselves next to Oliwa i Ogień. They definitely prefer reservations, but as I mentioned, it was getting late, and we managed to find a table for two without any problems. Meanwhile my companion lost her appetite, and didn't want to eat anything anymore. Ugh... The restaurant serves beautiful, modern Neapolitan pizzas and Italian dishes prepared following authentic Italian recipes. Unfortunately, we definitely didn't want pizza :) I found something with mushrooms for myself, and our second order was a simple focaccia. Let me tell you :), our focaccia was nothing else than a giant pizza without any toppings except extra-virgin olive oil, rosemary and olives:). I only knew one kind of focaccia, a small piece of moist, spongy bread with toppings and aromatic herbs. That's what I expected. My first reaction when I saw it was: "this is not our order"! If only you could see my companion's face ;) Priceless. Next, I was waiting and waiting for my 'gnocchi funghi e tartufo'. It turned out that our focaccia was treated as an appetizer, and our server was waiting for me. To do what? To finish the entire pizza without toppings first? :) Finally, she asked me if I was ready for my order. In fact, I was ready before I even arrived. It's just that if she'd explained right away what kind of focaccia they served, everything would have been so much nicer. My dish was delicious. The gnocchi texture was perfect, and the porcini in creamy truffle sauce with shaved truffle pecorino on top was a pure pleasure. So simple and satisfying. Thank You Chef.
