Our visit to Pinolandia was the most random visit but it ended up being some of the best food we ate while out and about in Miami. On this particular day, before a game at Marlin's Park, we arrived downtown riiiiiight as the skies opened up and it started pouring. We needed food, didn't have time for a extended meal and needed it to be close by (b/c of course none of us brought an umbrella). A quick search on Yelp led us a few blocks south to Pinolandia. THANK YOU YELP! When we walked up to find a huge line wrapped around the restaurant we knew we had picked the right place. And then we saw the grill off to the side cooking up alllllll the carne asada. A mom & pop shop w/ a line out the door? This place had to be good. And it was! The carne asada was amazing. Grilled so perfectly - juicy and tender. B/c none of us speak Spanish (and all of the ladies behind the counter did) a local, standing in line in front of us, made a couple suggestions - so our containers were filled with the fluffiest rice and yummiest plantains. And only for $8. So much good food for so little! Drinks were available at the store at the back of the restaurant. Water bottles, Jarritos in all the flavors, cans of coke and sprite. As a loyal customer for 12+ years, I hate to leave a review like this but I need to warn others about the food. Ive always ignored the fact that all the meat sits in a garbage can to season, leaving pieces of meat on the bottom to rot and possibly contaminate the rest of the meat. I have watched the food progressively decline in quality. Carne asada that was once supple, moist, and tender now just mimics the texture of wood chips. Dry & probably left too long in the garbage cans with the marinade. This past week I decided to treat myself to a plate of gallo pinto, carne asada, and queso frito with maduros: the usual meal combo that I would order. The previous time ordering was below the standard of what I was used to with their food but I decided to give it another chance, the price is good for a pretty large portion of food (for me atleast) you are served so its usually one of the options I pick for a work lunch that I can usually save for dinner. Id say its pretty hard to fuck up a gallo pinto so I cant complain about that, the maduros were tasty as well. But the CARNE. WOOD CHIPS!!!! so dry and difficult to even swallow. After forcing myself to sit through a few pieces, I really couldnt take it anymore and abandoned my meal. I thought it was just one of those days that my meal disappoints me. A few hours later, my entire body is cramping and weak. I am aching at my head and stomach. While Im at work I cannot even function. I got food poisoning!!!!! I am still in bed a day later, trying to keep water down & even have a bite of some fruits my caring lover brought for me to feel better. I am so upset and will not be returning for their food ever again. Ive been cursing the moment I thought of the idea to pick up a meal here. Whenever I'm in the area (which isn't often), I pass by and grab a carne aside completa! It's always spot on (coming from a Nica herself). The only down side to my visits, is that I'm not big on their quest frito, which i like to have with my dish. The cacao could also use a little more quality flavor. Honestly, it's a crime that Pinolandia only has 4 stars on Yelp. Ask any local Nica and they will tell you that this place is THE fritanga to hit up when you're in Miami. How good is it?? Once had a Nica buddy who moved out to Los Angeles some years back, and when going to fly out and visit him he requested we bring him some Pino, which we did. Holding that bag of food in my lap for the 5+ hour flight from Miami to Los Angeles, I swear that everybody on that plane was salivating from the aroma of carne asada, gallo pinto and queso frito that permeated throughout the cabin. If that doesn't tell you how good it is, the constant line that runs outside the building should also give you an idea. ***A few caveats however before visiting, so you don't go in with some ridiculous expectations and give it a bad review: #1. If you don't speak Spanish, take someone along who does. And if you're one of those people who want to complain about "This is America, everyone should speak English!" then do yourself a favor and skip this place and just go to Taco Bell. (As a matter of fact, just skip Miami altogether because we don't have time for that type of mindset here) #2. This is NOT the place to dine in. Yes there are a few tables, but it's not very comfortable because it's a tiny place and there is always a crowd of people waiting to get their hands on that deliciousness. Hands down, one of the best Nica "fast food" fritangas. You can be in and out with your order in minutes, which is one of the highlights of Pinolandia. Sometimes the carne asada can be hit or miss- I've had a few tough pieces of meat which didn't seem like they were marinated long enough-- but when the stars align and you get that perfect piece--(more likely than not) you'll be in food heaven! Their gallopinto (rice with beans) has never let me down and if you're lucky enough to arrive early in the morning for breakfast before it sells out, you're in for a real treat. The staff is awesome, they don't waste time and move the line along very quickly. I love me some nica food and when I'm in the area it's one or the other. In my opinion, Pinolandia has better meat but for everything else including ambiance Yambo's is the winner. Needless to say, Pinolandia is legit and food is delicious. For less than $10 per person you can get a complete meal that can possibly be shared between two people. I usually go with the Carne Asada (grilled meat), Gallo Pinto (beans and rice), platano maduro (fried plantains), queso frito (fried cheese) and ensalada (salad)... and don't forget the pique (hot pickled veggie sauce). The food here is great! Pinolandia is a small whole in the wall with limited seating, I usually take it to go. Service is buffet style and fast, not a fancy place. Customer service depends of who's behind the counter since this is mostly a grab and go meal establishment vs a sit down dinner. Searching for Fritangas in Kendall seemed to be a fail, anyways after Yelping we drive over here for a super casual night out, when the "I want to do something different" comes out we find ourselves spending until $15 for a shared meal which is pretty awesome! Anyways by far the best carne asada I have tasted in Miami, that even being compared to Los Ranchos in my opinion. The meat was soft tender and not that chewy carne asada you're used too, I could just the meat with a plastic fork and knife! The rice was delicious, after probably gaining ten pound. The carne asada stole the show -- that grilled meat tastes incredible with its smoked meat flavor. The gallo pinto went well with it, definitely some amazing rice & beans. The queso frito (Dominican Fried Cheese) was interesting and I'm glad I tried it, but it was a little too salty for my personal tastes. If you're looking for the real deal, authentic experience while in Miami come here. This place is a small little grill that is attached to a tiny market in the back. They have a bright sign but another giveaway that you are at the right place is the line of people waiting to place their order. Do not let the line turn you away as it moves very quickly. Plus good things like home cooked Nicaraguan food are worth the wait! Note that there is no menu and the employees speak very little English. However my husband and I were able to communicate just fine by throwing in some spanglish with some pointing to what we wanted. Once you begin ordering they will fill your to go box with a HUGE helping of rice and beans, then you get your choice of either tortillas or plantains. After that you let them know what else you want. Go with the carne asada because it is amazing and you watch them grill it right beside you as you wait in line. Once you get your food all packaged up you can pay with either cash or card, but there is a $7 min of card payments. For two boxes of rice and beans, plantains, carne asada, and another box of this chicken, sausage, and veggie dish our total was only $22!!! The amount of food that we got could have easily fed 4 to 5 people so expect to have plenty of leftovers. Everything was delicious but the carne asada stole the show as it was perfectly grilled, tender, and juicy. Alright so Pinolandia is my go to place for getting your monies worth. Every time I go I always order the same thing. The plate I order always run me $12 but its legit a meal for two. $12 plate will come with Gallo Pinto, 2 pieces of carne Asada (steak), Maduros, 2 queso fritos (typically it'll come with one for $11 (if you want one), I'm fat so I get two) & repollo . That right there is the meal to order EVERY SINGLE TIME you or anyone goes to Pinolandia! Typically go for lunch when I have to work the weekends since it is only a few mins away, otherwise some drunk Miami nights will lead me ending with some Pinolandia. At times the line is out the order, but it passes as everything is plated immediately. The food is always fresh, and they are always grilling the carne asada, so you can be entertained watching the meat grill while you wait to order. They also have a little convenient store in the back that sells beverages and other cultural items. Keep in mind the convenient store is CASH ONLY, but the actually food part is CASH/CARD. In some ways, Pinolandia reminds me of a very scaled down version of one of the "El Palacio de los Jugos" restaurants. When you enter, you'll see a man grilling carne asada (steak) to your right, the line of people usually runs past him, curls around in front of the entrance to the small food store at the back, and then next to a display case where you order your food, the staff serves it into Styrofoam containers, and you pay. We've come here a few times for takeout as they're open 24 hours and it's a great place to get an inexpensive meal anytime, especially when you're on the way home from a late night out. Usually 1 meal purchased here is large enough to serve 2 of us. On our most recent visit, I got carne asada (she gave me 2 really large pieces of steak), a generous portion of gallo pinto and fried plantains, while my partner got the same but ordered tortilla rather than plantains.
