5 stars from me for Forest Hills. I've been here twice now and think it will become a weekly spot. I've tried their Jian Bing and their ham omelette - both delicious and super cheap (by cheap I mean a food option + beverage for about $10). I've also tried their chai latte (yummy) and regular coffee. The decor is cute and cozy, and I like that the place gets a great deal of sunlight (which is lacking in many storefronts on Austin St). The layout is also well thought out - not too crammed and a nice place to have some "me time" or catch up with a friend. Love seeing places like this come to the neighborhood! read more

I've been wanting to try their Jian bing for a while now. It's a traditional Chinese breakfast much like a French crepe. I don't claim to be an expert in jian bing but it was pretty good. I got the everything jian bing which has ham, bacon, chicken, avocado, lettuce and egg. I had eaten half of it before I thought to take a picture of it so it's pretty big. I'm sure two people can share it which is good since it came out to be $15 and change. They had hand sanitizer at the doorway which is where you order. It's not the cut of my jib to preface a review with immediate acknowledgment that I did not sit for lunch, in this particular case I feel it must be said. Not that the well penned chalkboard breakfast and lunch items didn't read well enough, time was of the essence. *update to follow* While ordering my dark roast black, and chatting it ip a bit with the counterman I overheard a discussion about the lunch special. For ten dollars, during lunch hours only you get a Jian Bing sandwich, small salad and a coffee. This is under the assumption that my hearing pulled the data properly which I believe it did. End to end, corner to corner the patrons were busy at their laptops while a few little kiddos whom belonged to the adults lashed and flicked with patient precision upon their canvases that were sitting up upon their mini easels. The mugs and plates make me smile and I like the various seating options. Lovely small & cozy cafe with a nice warm ambiance! I had a Vietnamese "omlette wrap" with a delicious lightly spicy sauce and coffee. The service is very nice and accommodating. When I asked if there was cross contamination between the bread and meat (because I eat halal) one of the servers asked if I was Muslim and said they can clean the pan for my order. That really made my day I love when servers understand restrictions and don't make you feel like an outcast for it. Their cafe au lait was pretty good I got mine with a shot of caramel and cinnamon. My friend said he liked his coffee too and we both appreciated the cute cups. The interior is super cute. There's a small book self and a lot of nice decorations. The plates are also creative. I ordered a regular spicy jian bing with cheese and it was super flavorful. Mine was only filled with lettuce and cheese. I can imagine this would've been even better with some meat so if you can eat meat, definitely add some on. But regardless, I was satisfied. My friend got some butter pancakes and asked for a side of sausage. He seemed to really love it- only thing was that it seemed that the sausages were actually hot dogs- but I cant confirm since I didn't try it. If they were hot dogs, the servers did let us know they were hot dog shaped. Price was really good too. Not cheap but not overly price- a nice brunch spot in my opinion. Quaint little cafe that's perfect for getting work done. They have a large communal seating table as well as 2-3 individual tables and a table by the window. After passing by countless times (and leaving since it's always packed), my friend and I finally tried Pink Forest after seeing space to sit and work. We ordered their Japanese green tea boba as well as a matcha latte. Both came in a mug which was great as it made the cafe seem cozier. They use decent quality matcha and both drinks hit the spot. I noticed a lot of people ordering dumplings and their Jian bings so I will definitely be back to try their food! They're not super strict with their 2 hour seating limit but I'm sure they'd reinforce it during busier times. They have a bathroom and limited outlets but enough so that not everyone is plugged in and taking up a lot of space. Overall, a great place to work or catch up with friends! read more

Cozy cafe spot in Forest Hills - I'm in love with the inviting pink walls and large windows that allow for a lot of natural light. The coffee is not half bad and they offer bubble tea options as well. It's an interesting asian fusion cafe that offers the typical coffee shop pastries (muffins, bagels, croissants etc.) but also staples like jian bing, banh mi, and shrimp dumplings (ha gao). This definitely had me intrigued. I came across this cafe on my search for work spaces in the NYC area. The cafe boasts good wifi, pretty delicious lattes, sitting room for about 20 or so, and good service/friendly staff. There is a sign that limits time at the cafe to about 2 hours, but I don't think they are super strict with this policy. Outlets are scarce though so I'd come fully charged if you're planning to get some work done! There is a lunch special for jian bing, a small salad, and coffee for $9.99 (11am-3pm) which seemed like a great deal. However, I wouldn't say the jian bing is anything to ride home about - it was soggy and overall not flavorful, filled with lettuce and not much else. I was disappointed by this and would probably opt to try something else another time (or maybe stick to the coffee). Still, it is a nice place to get some work done in the area. I saw a lot of people come in to catch up with a friend, with their babies, getting some reading/studying done etc. The welcoming space and atmosphere is moreso the reason I'd return! read more

Food is delish. Love the tofu bahn mi, shrimp dumplings and pancakes. The staff are wonderful and very accommodating.

I am not a fan of the color pink - not so much the actual color but the sexist connotations associated with the color. Not sure how to enforce gender roles in something as innocuous as toys? Slap some pink on it, and never mind any creativity in its design. This dis-taste of pink does not automatically extend to people named "pink" (Pink makes some decent music), or things that are pink (Pepto Bismol is a godsend when your stomach is feeling queasy, and indoor insulation foam is decently a good thing). Hell, I don't exactly dislike businesses with the name Pink (Thomas Pink makes some decent dress shirts). However, if your establishment is called Pink Forest and served me inferior wares, well, I get to go to town on you. See, I am okay with cafes serving food. All I ask is that they do a good job of it - There are 2 decent French bakeries in Forest Hills, one with a decent barista. There's a decent Greek bakery (Martha's). There's also a good Vietnamese bakery/cafe in the area (Violet's) that can make you one of their devastating iced coffees and a crispy banh mi sandwich (you know, a Saigon spuckie). If you are going to serve a banh mi, you need the right ingredients (thin layer of mayonnaise on the baguette, a layer of pate, quite a bit of cilantro, Vietnamese pork roll, ham, cucumbers, usually a small bit of pickled radishes and carrots, and seasoned with a dash of Maggi sauce and Sriracha sauce)...so why did the estabishment serve me something that is not quite a banh mi? I was already suspicious when they asked me whether it should be one with ham or chicken - eh...isn't Banh mi the one with pate and pork roll by default? The result was very disappointing. It had luncheon meat, way too much lettuce (which should not be there in the first place), way too much pickles (which tastes like the Chinese ones, and not the Vietnamese ones), no pork roll, no pate, and inundated with diluted Miracle whip. It was both bland and unpleasant. It was also $8.00, more than the version across the street at Violet's. Well, maybe they are just lousy at making Vietnamese sandwiches. That's funny, there are Mexican chefs all over NYC restaurant kitchens doing all sorts of cuisines, and they generally do well, but for the sake of argument let's try to pin ethnic culinary prowess upon the ethnicity of the chef. Maybe it I order something Northern Chinese (like a jianbing), they will do a fairer job of it. In case you are not familiar with jianbing, it's a crepe made by streetside vendors that contains a wheat based flour, an egg, thinly sliced cucumbers, julienned scallions, cilantro and a generous slathering of hoisin sauce. If you ever run into a good version as served on the streets of Beijing, it's crispy, savory, and features both an oily element, a savory element and an grassy element from the herbs. If you are familiar with an okonomiyaki, think along those lines, but minus the meat and fried cabbages. Uh, yeah. Someone should clue these guys in, because what my wife gotten was not quite a jianbing either. It was mushy, bland and slapped with lettuce. Not enough hoisin, and tasted washed out. Considering that it was $6.50 it was not good bang for the buck either. *Ugh*. No. Just no. There are much better places to get coffee and eats in FH, and frankly, if you look at their website, you have a sneaking suspicion that they are more interested in peddling drawings than selling you something to eat or drink. Asked for a hot matcha, got a cold (passably lukewarm) matcha. Ordered a granola bar, which immediately fell out of their cheap paper wrapping (open on both sides). Asked cashier for a new one, and she insisted it was "my fault" and did not want to give me a new one. She grumbled and gave me a stale hard one from under the counter when I said "it's just one item, don't you want a return customer?" A dirty old teddy bear was on my chair (disgusting!), the lighting has clearly never been dusted any time this year. Dirt and grime on the window sill. Worst customer service ever. Worst food and drinks ever. Dirty old cafe. Slow wifi. Limited outlets. Loud AC. Need I go on? Come on, Forest Hills. Where are your good coffee shops?! Or do I have to go to Astoria to get a good cup of coffee that isn't from Starbucks. read more

If I could leave this place zero stars , I would. we've never felt disrespected in such a short amount of time that we were actually in there. Very rude person taking our order , makes a nasty face to our service animal golden doodle and tells us to go on the side with the dog. I come to this cafe at least once in two weeks. I usually come here to study, and I think it's a good place for it with both music and people normally not being too loud. Thwy have frew wifi. They have a strict no outside food/drink allowed rule - I was once told to put my bottle of water away. The people working here are very nice. My only suggestion/recommendation would be for the place to have more working outlets. For example, right now there are 9 customers, of which, 7 are on a laptop/tablet constantly looking at the one guy using the outlet to be done. read more

Cute cafe was a little busy on Saturday afternoon. I looked forward to the JianBing with ham. It was tasty but I was disappointed it wasn't crispy. I had it for take-out though, ate it within a few minutes. It was more like a savory crepe. It was pretty big and filling. After a couple of trips to Pink Forest, I have to say that I'm a fan. I've tried several items off both the food and drink menus and have not been disappointed. The space is small and I really appreciate that they don't cram the seating in. The decor is modern and the windows let in plenty of light. I've been here with people to chat, and the ambiance is perfect for that. I really enjoyed their version of the Jian Bing and would probably go back for that again. As far as drinks, I'm simple- the green matcha latte is good, and they serve the drinks in cute mugs; but the lemon iced tea really hit to spot for me on a hot summer day, not too sweet and just enough lemon. The staff was friendly and service was prompt each time I've been there, so I will definitely go back to try the rest of their menu. Mediocre at best. All I wanted was a cup of hot coffee, but I should've gone elsewhere. The coffee was watery and warm (a temperature that coffee should never be when first served). My fiance ordered an almond milk cappuccino and that was not much better. Cute cafe, moderately price with a diverse menu. I've been there twice within a week. On my 1st visit I ordered an avocado sandwich. It was nothing fancy but tasted great. On my second visit for breakfast I ordered an egg and cheese on an everything bagel. It was good but I've had better. (If your looking for bagels better of going to Gotta Getta Bagel.) My second time here. What I established on the two visits is, they have decent coffee, not bad but not great. The first time here I just got coffee and a pastry and it was decent but this time I decided to get breakfast as did my brother. I opted for the pancakes and all I can say for the few things they have on the menu you'd think the pancakes would be great or even good but not so. You get two small and very thin pancakes. My recommendation, never order pancakes here! By the look of my brothers omelette I'd say skip that as well. It looked like a two egg omelette and the cheese was not melted along with the omelette came, nothing! No potatoes, no toast, no garnish, nothing so my recommendation, skip the egg dishes. I'm hoping their sandwiches are better? The two star rating as opposed to one is, the prices are decent. One other thing that was puzzling, the cafe was fairly full with only one 2 seat table being available (which we took) and a couple of barstools at the very small counter. With that in mind, a teenager with an empty glass and nothing else, was sitting at a table in the window which looked to be the most comfortable table in the cafe with a large comfortable chair on one side and bench on the other. This girl was on the phone literally lying across the table, not eating or drinking and as I mentioned, one empty cup. I asked her if she was finished with the table and she replied no. What I found out was she was related to one of the owners/staff. I was in disbelief that they would let her take up a table when the cafe was full where she could've just as easily sat at the counter which was relatively small for eating but would've been fine for talking on a phone or texting or instagram, well you get the idea. I mentioned this on the way out to the two ladies behind the counter and they thanked me for mentioning it. I most likely will never stop in here again for a meal but I wouldn't say I I wouldn't stop in for a coffee. By the way, it seemed half the patrons were their to use the free WiFi. I've been there once, we ordered pancake and Jiangbing. I was very disappointed about how average the pancake was. The Jiangbing is just ok, won't order it again. It's a really cute coffee shop, if you just want to come here for a coffee and just sit here do your work, then this is the place for you. But food wise, I really don't recommend it. read more

Just opened on Friday so this is a preliminary review. I'll start with the pros. The counter guy was polite. He apologized for my 20+ minute wait for my order of Jian bing after I said something and offered to remake my melting ice coffee. The price was good. $5.95 for a Bing (aka a crepe) and a coffee. Now my complaints: I wish the guy prepared me for the wait. I heard him tell some other people 10 minutes for the crepe and I thought ok. Thats long but they're new. 20+ minutes and not a word to me waiting. I had to ask about the status and he said oh, they're halfway done making it! The lady who handed me my order after 25 minutes gave it to me in my to go box, and said to go? After I confirmed, she dropped a plastic bag on top and said "I can't open it." And she turned around and left. So I had to stand there and proceed to open the bag myself to place my box in. Now the most important part. The food. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt because I got this to go and I live 8 minutes away. The crepe was soggy because of the egg on top. There's some hoisin sauce. There's some hard stale crepe mixed inside. Almost no cilantro or scallions. The lettuce (square pieces) is minimal. See pictures. Seems like they also do some painting on the side and sell bagels as well. They're new so I'll try them again in a few weeks after they've "worked out the kinks." read more

Someone recommended this place to us so my boyfriend and I decided to give it a try. We went in at 10am and wanted to have a croissant or a muffin but they had already ran out. Really? It's still morning hours, they should have had. We ordered an iced coffee, the cashier asked me if I wanted light or heavy on ice. I said light. We waited like 3 minutes for the coffee. They literally put 5 ice cubes in my iced coffee. We then waited over 10 minutes for a bagel with cream cheese. My iced coffee was already watered down. Not only that, but my bagel was also not toasted well, even though I had specifically said toasted dark. I would have complained but I didn't have another 10 minutes to wait for another bagel. Would not return. For a new place, they should be giving customers exactly what they ask for and not have to wait so long. read more

I give Pink Forest 4-stars for coffee/drinks and maybe 3 stars for the food, which is passable but not very good. As a coffee/study spot though, it's pretty exceptional with great service, a wide range of beverages, and lovely decor. Service has never failed me. Highly recommend for cappuccino/tea/coffee/smoothies, would get bagels elsewhere, Jianbing is fine but not great. read more

Restaurants and cafes must have proper ventilation. Pink Forest smells like bacon EVERY TIME I go in. It's overpowering, dead pig in my nose. Coffee shops are a place people go to work on computers. I came at 11am and upon arrival there was only one seat available at this time, which meant my party and I had to stake out two more chairs. This place isn't the best for groups since tables are best situated for two at a time, maybe up to four people it'll be fine if you come at the right time. You seat yourself upon arriving which makes it a casual environment. I ordered my food and coffee upon arriving and the hot coffee was handed to me immediately. The two ice coffees I ordered were pretty much forgotten about until I asked about them 10-15 minutes later. I ordered two jianbings and one banhmi and the food didn't come out til nearly 40 minutes later! The kitchen is small and there is usually one cashier/runner working and one chef prepping all the food. My small coffee was really small for $2.50, and tasted a bit sour too, so I added milk to fix that. I'd come back to have an afternoon snack as I anticipate this place to be less busy during that time, but otherwise I'd only drop in for coffee and to read my book by the window seats. read more

Cute little cafe on Austin Street. As other reviewers said it is whimsical and you can have full cups of rose buds in your tea. Haven't tried the food as I normally come when they're about to close. Quite good!-- if at times inconsistent. I regularly come here to eat and drink. It is a great spot to do work in. Their lattes are usually quite delicious. I especially enjoy their tofu Bahn mi, although there is definitely a consistency issue. On the plus side I really enjoy the horseradish they use for seasoning of the Bahn mi. It's located conveniently on Austin street and it's a nice little get away compared to the bustle that goes on on Austin Street. My only issue with this place is the lack of space. It's kinda cramped and when you sit at one table you pretty much feel you're sitting at the tables next to you too. It's not very good if you want some privacy. read more

I found the menu confusing and asked the counter person a few questions; it didn't help. The counter person looked at me like I was a space invader and kept giving me one or two word answers instead of just explaining their offerings. I ordered something anyway, figured it would just be a surprise. I also ordered an iced coffee with almond milk. When my coffee was ready, it came black. I asked about the almond milk and Mr Cranky Pants counter guy snapped at me that I had to pay extra for it. I told him I ordered it with almond milk initially from him, but was fine to just pay now to get the milk. He still didn't give me the milk, he went back through the register receipts (mind you, there was a fairly long line at this point) to prove what the order was. When he looked and realized I had both ordered it and paid for it, all he said was "oh" and then gave me the milk. All that for what? .50? It was completely awkward. The sandwich thing took awhile and they have no system to get the food to the right people. They call it out by the name of what you ordered, which, it's in Vietnamese, do you think I remember the Vietnamese name of what I ordered 15 minutes ago? The food itself was drowned in sauce and just wasn't good. I should also mention, it was about 85 degrees outside and they didn't have the air conditioning on. I'm truly disappointed. Was looking around for pancakes and was excited to find they had banana chocolate pancakes. I'm not sure if this is fresh batter or not but the bananas were laid on top of the pancake and it was just chocolate syrup not chocolate chips. Both ingredients should be mixed into batter. Not to mention it was soaking in simple syrup which they said was maple syrup. Syrup should be put on the side. And then I got freezer burn butter. For $8.75 it was totally not worth it. We also ordered Bahn mi and there was no pate, we asked if the ham was viet ham but pretty sure was just regular deli ham. Can't tell you how upset I am. I was looking forward to trying this place out. Was excited to have a new establishment in the neighborhood. They need to up their food recipe instead of lazily slapping something together.
