It's not much on the outside -- wedged between an auto body shop and a taco truck, on a busy street corner -- but you shouldn't judge this book by its cover. The staff at Park Ridge are very attentive and caring, including doctors, social workers, nurses, therapists, etc. My mother is gluten-free and struggled for a week or so to get her diet right -- the food manager finally took over her meal preparations himself, so that he could personally guarantee that her meals were free of allergens. Therapists walked her across the street to QFC to buy snacks, and helped her get back on her feet. She recently checked out about a month ahead of schedule, and is doing great. No long-term care facility is a particularly happy place, or someplace you want to find yourself for an extended period of time. But if you have a loved one who needs care, you'll get a high quality of service at Park Ridge.

My Experience at Alderwood: A Journey from Frustration to Genuine Care…read more I recently stayed at Alderwood for rehab and was discharged not long ago. I want to share my honest experience -- the difficult parts, the turning point, and ultimately the reason I left with gratitude. During my first week, I was not thrilled with the care I received. I often felt overlooked. Some staff members -- not all -- seemed rushed, with little interaction or engagement. When I voiced concerns, I felt dismissed rather than heard. I repeatedly asked to speak with the person in charge of the nurses and aides, but she never came. I spoke with the social worker and the administrator, who reassured me they would address my concerns and send the nursing director. Still, she never appeared. My main concern at the time was how my legs were being wrapped. I wanted guidance, reassurance, and proper care. Then the inspectors arrived, and shortly after, I learned the director had been fired. This worried me even more -- if things weren't running well before, what would happen now? A few days later, a gentleman introduced himself as the nurse supervisor. At first, I didn't think much of it. He came in regularly, asking how I was doing and whether I had any issues with my care. I assumed he was just another staff member making rounds. But he kept coming back. He kept asking. And he genuinely listened. I even asked, is there a problem that's why you keep asking these questions? Slowly, I noticed a shift. The staff's attitude improved. They were more attentive, kinder, and more professional. I told him this directly -- that since he started checking in, the entire atmosphere felt different. He told me, the staff here are wonderful. They may just be under pressure but thank you, I will surely let them know. A few days before my discharge, I received a new roommate who struggled with yelling and screaming at night. I understood she couldn't help it, but it made resting and healing extremely difficult. I reported my concerns to management, including to a nurse named Tee, who said she would inform her supervisor. Honestly, I didn't expect anything to happen. My hope was low. I told them not to do anything about it, not even a grievance. I really wanted to just leave then but I physically cant. To my surprise, shortly after reporting the issue, the same gentleman walked in -- and this time he introduced himself as the Director of Nursing. I jokingly gave him an earful for not telling me sooner. His response is something I will never forget. He said: "My actions should speak for themselves. I want my residents to remember me not by name or title, but by how I made them feel." I cried -- tears of relief and gratitude. He apologized for my experience and for the rough night. He offered solutions immediately and even brought me earplugs. When I told him I was worried I wouldn't hear my alarm, he promised that a staff member would wake me up at exactly 7:00 AM -- "like you're in a hotel," he said. And he delivered. All my earlier frustrations were overshadowed by the sincerity, consistency, and compassion shown by the new Director of Nursing. His leadership changed the environment. The therapy team, nurses, and aides became more attentive, more present, and more caring. I left Alderwood feeling heard, supported, and respected. That is why I gave a 5‑star review -- not because everything was perfect from the start, but because the right person stepped in, listened, and transformed my experience. From the most expert doctors & administrators to the most basic housekeepers & all of the aides & therapists in between, everyone was amazingly caring, attentive, & good listeners. I appreciated that my roommate on the other side of the beautiful curtain (more on this below) was also treated with so much patience & nurturing; even when I myself might have been getting fed up with her relentless demands & commands, & her significant care needs, all of the staff consistently dealt with her with so much kindness, which was so impressive. Everyone really listened to her as they did to me. I loved that I had so much freedom to stream music, news, movies, etc., at any hour, when of course, sleeping through the night was not really happening due to pain, at least at first. When I worked with the physical & occupational therapists, they really listened to me when I told them I live on the floor (sleeping on a mat, eating at a low Japanese-style table), that my apartment has stairs, & they focussed my therapy on preparing me for my own environment. They supported me in gradually improving, pushing me just enough. I don't see how they could have been better. When I had concerns about diet, the woman in charge of meals & nutrition came & met with me one to one & after that, I received many more extra portions of fresh fruit & yoghurt instead of sugary desserts. I still felt that I was not getting enough vegetables (although in all fairness, I do normally eat way more vegetables & herbs, etc., than is normal in the typical American diet). The supposedly available snack of carrots & celery was hardly ever available upon request (probably because no one else ever requests that). I finally ordered a case of V-8 juice from Amazon to supplement my vegetable intake. I want to mention how much I enjoyed the beautiful curtains separating roommates: yellow & turquoise Asian-inspired bamboo pattern, which looked green in some lighting, yellow some other times, & coordinated interestingly with the uphostery fabric, reminiscent of Paul Klee, on the sturdy chair, which functioned as a chair for a visitor, a good place to slide a meal tray onto, a good stable arm to prop myself up with, etc., etc. For an art lover like myself, it made a difference to have some beauty in the environment, rather than being in an overly clinical sensory deprivation chamber. My room looked out on a garden with gorgeous trees, some of which turned color during the time I was recuperating. Long hallways with wooden floors were beautiful & clean & the whole place did not smell offensive. Back to the staff again, I enjoyed meeting so many wonderful people from different countries/cultures all over the world & I loved how they work together so beautifully to give such wonderful support to residents.

Tech and Nursing needs more organizing. Some nurses know what is happening while others are stepping in, perhaps for the day, and are unsure what has been documented and not. Techs have good intentions, however communication and consistency is lacking. Odds are this is due to those who oversee the departments providing lack of funding. Overall a wonderful place to start recovery.

Certified Nurse Assistants (CNA's) are the heart of the operation, and come from all over the world. They are competent, cheerful, safe, clean, hard working and kind, as good as it gets IMHO. PT's, OT's and nurses do their jobs well, despite my desire to push myself too hard for my own good. There are some levels of administration missing for smooth running, but I understand this is temporary due to unexpected staff departures (for family and health reasons) If half-point ratings were available I would dock CLH a half-point because the food is awful. Some is inedible, diet orders are not followed, and it's always cold. Friends have ended up bringing me food, and given my low appetite that worked for me. The wonderful staff makes up for the poor quality of the meals, and then some. But be advised. The non-profit quality of caring is evident in the cheerful interior of the building, the architecture is airy and accessible, and the courtyard is lovely. CLA is not perfect, nor is anywhere. My first two weeks here were hard given the trauma of a post-op seizure, but I have felt safe and cared-for and I AM recovering. If, God forbid, I need rehab or long-term care, I would come back here.

In short My lovely bride and I know the local ERs all too…read morewell lately, and this one is by far the best. It's not attached to a hospital, but it's fully staffed and the care is VERY fast, capable, and caring. In long My wife had a massive stroke about 17 months ago. As often happens, she developed tremors, chronic pain, and now intermittent small seizures. This means we head to the ER every couple months even without a new stroke or other new symptoms. It just gets to be more than we can manage for her at home. Everett, Edmonds, and Mill Creek all have ERs, though the Mill Creek location is less known since it's not attached to a hospital. Same with this one in Lynnwood. Since my bride usually doesn't need to be admitted after a seizure, a stand-alone ER does the trick. We drove ourselves and checked in with the front desk. Before they could even put on her wristband, they were calling her back. Amazing. They wristbanded her on our way to the exam room. 3 people were already waiting to get her vitals, hook up monitors, and make her comfortable. Even more amazing. We've sat sometimes for hours in other ERs. No exaggeration. The doctor on duty was very present and focused. He reviewed her chart before coming in, and spent more time on it after asking questions. She was asleep, and he spent 10 productive minutes asking for every kind of info. They ran tests and made sure her bed was warm and comfortable. All the RNs and CNAs and whatnot were friendly and worked fast. Radiology was awesome, they had the most-modern mobile x-ray machine I've seen. I've seen more of them than I ever wanted to, believe me. We spent 3 hours there and never had pain-management issues get any worse, which often happens during long stressful waits. We really enjoyed chatting with all of the staff who checked on her. At one point, her O2 saturation dropped a bit, and before I could even figure out what the beep meant, an RN was in the room hooking up an O2 tube to her nose. I don't want to have a favorite ER, but circumstances demand that I know I need one. This is definitely it. If she ever needs to be admitted from here, she'd likely be transferred to Bellevue, since it's hard to find beds around here. But I can handle an extra 10 minutes drive time bringing her home if she saves *hours* before she even gets seen.
