The pastors, staff, deacons, and elders do a wonderful job at keeping each other accountable. I have seem ups and downs handled with God's grace and the church have open arms to anyone who walks through those doors. What initially drew us in were the many young families who call this parish home. They offer "children's church" during the 11 a.m. Mass & have a Catholic school as part of the campus. The altar here is huge and gorgeous and decorated with everything from cakes and cookies to seafood and candles. I can see why people come from all over Louisiana come to see this altar. I tried to take some good pictures, but there was no way I could capture the majesty of this thing in one single frame. Needless, to say, the line was out the door. One thing I like about the way they do things here: they have two lines. The super long line is for people who not only want to view the altar, but also eat some of the food and there is another entrance for people who want to see the altar, but don't want to eat. There are also people selling prayer cards, candles, holy water, rosaries and other religious items, if that is something that might interest you. The outside of the church itself is amazing and lovely and is a beautiful addition to this quiet Gretna neighborhood. The grounds of the church courtyard are extremely spacious, and I liked that there is a nice area with benches, if you want to relax and say some prayers while enjoying the nice weather.

I attended a wedding here recently and loved it all. It's a church with vintage vibes but on a gramdee scale. The upkeep can't be easy, but the staff has done a great job in maintaining its aesthetic. The acoustics are quite good, there is ample room for all guests, and a good amount of parking. I've been told the masses are well attended, but that it's never too crowded due to the massive space. It's easy to wander around in here and get lost in the various rooms, statue spots, I've seen and been in quite a few St. Joseph churches but this is among the most unique and magnificent I've experienced thus far.

I've visited several churches in New Orleans, as well as many other cities. St. Paul Lutheran…read morestands out as one of the friendliest and most welcoming I've ever attended as a newcomer. The church is housed in a beautiful, historic building in The Marigny, which is an easy 20 minute walk down Burgundy from Esplanade in the lower French Quarter, for those of you who may be visiting. This morning's 10:30 traditional Lutheran service was attended by about 50 parishioners. The building suffered some damage from Hurricane Ida last summer which still has the pipe organ out of commission, but the piano they're using provided adequate accompaniment for the hymns and responses. The pastor delivered a great message on the call we all have to share the love of Christ with our neighbors, including our enemies. Following the worship service, we were invited downstairs for "Pasta with a Purpose", a lasagna brunch the high school youth group provided as a fund raiser for their upcoming trip to the national youth gathering in Houston. The organizers did an awesome job with the entire event, from the presentation to the Italian ambiance to having the high schoolers dressed as Italian waiters as they served the lasagna, salad, bread, drinks (including mimosas) and Italian ice for dessert. Bottom-line, I've been to sexier, higher energy worship services with better music, but never one warmer or more welcoming and inclusive than what I experienced today! Definitely planning a return visit!!!

It was built by Jesuits and is still a Jesuit church. The current building will be celebrating its 100th birthday in the next couple of years, but the parish celebrated its centennial in 1991. The church has wonderful acoustics and the music is usually great since the Loyola School of Music students rotate in on organ (and other instruments) and vocals. Parking can be a challenge, especially on a weekday when school is in session. The horseshoe is not available for parking for the church, except for the few visitor spaces. Instead, parking is available along West Road (to the left of the church as you face it) and in the West Road Parking Garage.
