To have the two combined here in Frankfurt makes for a powerful statement. It's a bit wrong to quote Joseph Stalin in Germany about something like this, but the saying rings mostly true. "A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic." What you have here at this wall of remembrance is eleven thousand tragedies. Start with a close up pick a single marker and read the name and the dates. Place a stone. Realize that this was a single person. A single human being. Selected and killed for no reason other than the God they believed in. And then, once you have that in your mind, step back and take in a few more of these markers. Step back further. And further. And further. Until your vision is filled with the names of thousands killed by the Nazis for no reason other than they were Jews or Catholics or homosexuals or Romanis. It is persuasive. We must never forget what happened here in Frankfurt and in Germany so that It Never Happens Again. The loose stone gravel is designed specifically to be uncomfortable. Keep that in the back of your mind as you tour this cemetery and memorial. On the gate to the cemetery itself, according to our tour guide, the words translate to "For the living."

I have visited two concentration camps, Dauchau in Bavaria and Sachsenhausen in Berlin. These visits will forever be imprinted into my brain, which I think is important. Thanks to Yelp, I was able to find this memorial in Frankfurt. It is quite unassuming, so it can be easily missed. At first, it just looks like a wall along the street, but once you stop and look, you will see the wall extended towards the back of the lot. Row upon row of those who perished, with the names on a piece of steel protruding from the wall. The ground is all rock. To honor a person, place a rock on the name shelf. I have read that this is a tradition to show a person has been remembered without leaving flowers to die. Take your time while you visit. Allow yourself to feel the raw emotions from the thousands of names, feel the enormity of the loss. We simply cannot allow this tragedy to happen again.
