This square is super lively and jammed packed full of people. It's not a pedestrian square, there are cars that go through it but if you've been to Italy, you know that streets are sidewalks and it doesn't really matter. There are a lot of hotels, restaurants and bars to visit in the square itself and in the immediate surrounding area. There are also a lot of shops, both local, touristy and major name. If you head east and go down Via San Cesareo, you'll see all the tourist shops and limoncello everything. The street before that one has the "normal" luxury tourist stuff. There are places to view the ocean from this square and it can get quite busy. Two of the best places we ate the entire trip were in this area. While there are tourist traps, most of these places are just good and well worth the visit.

Wonderful atmosphere. Extraordinary food and service. We recommended it to friends visiting Sorrento after us.

Our cruise ship docked at Naples and we were bused here as part of Pompeii /Sorrento guided tour. Looking back, I regretted missing the opportunity to have camera ready to capture the this picturesque town on a cliff from a distance on the winding road approaching it. This town square is a bustling, cheerful place with lots of tourists. We walked first to cliff side on the right with view of the scenic coast. Then we strolled back towards the town center, first entering the cathedral to pay our respect, then through the alleys teeming with souvenir shops on the lookout for local fares such as lemoncello, sweets and other Italian products including leather goods rather than items imported from PRC. There are plenty of dining choices in the center of the town square. Surely we will consider this fun place for a more leisurely revisit on our own.

The sun had almost set though thankfully I managed to catch the last glimpse of its orange embers from this vantage point too. This location's line of sight allows you to see a tad bit further west, and you're directly above the central area between the Marina Grande and Marina Piccolo. The views are spectacular, maybe even a little better than from Villa Della Victoria a couple blocks away. The park's green space is includes sections of green lawn that wraps around the edges of the Chiostro di San Francesco, a 14th century Franciscan monastery that now serves as an event space and art gallery. There are a few early 20th-century busts scattered around the park commemorating local figures like musician Salve D'Esposito and magistrate Francesco Saverio Gargiulo. Wasn't there for long since the monastery building also closes by 7pm, though really felt lucky to catch a beautiful sunset here!

There's access to get down to the beach area, which isn't bad on the way down but it's a trek back up - although there is a paid elevator you can take back up. Dont miss it!

With beautiful blue water, views of the steep cliffs from sea level, and Mt. Vesuvius in the background, it's very picturesque and worth experiencing even if you aren't catching a ferry. There are some cafes and a few touristy souvenir kiosks, one that sold some very pretty and functional tote bags. I purchased one that folded up to practically nothing and easily fit into my handbag. This way, I always had a tote to carry any items I bought along the way. For $5, my tote covered in signature Sorrento lemons was a treasure! The beach here isn't what one typically envisions. There is no sand and not much space. Most areas are owned by the hotels and they have private lifts that take you down to their private docks lined with recliners. On the far south end is a public area and if you are coming from the town above, you can walk down a path of steps and switchbacks to reach the public docks and cafes. From above, the lift / elevator is located over by the museum and small. For just $1 euro each way, you can make it down to the beach or back up to the town easily. Some people walk down then take the lift up. After a full day of walking, I did the round trip for $2 and it was totally worth it!

Cattedrale dei Santi Filippo e Giacomo (Cathedral of Saints Philip & James), also known as the Sorrento Cathedral, is one of the most well-known and culturally significant important churches in town. As a functional parish, regular masses are held here and it's a central gathering place for local religious festivities. Dedicated to Our Lady of the Assumption and Saints Philip and James, its history dates back to the 11th century, with a plethora of changes altering its appearance from its Romanesque origins to add Baroque and neo-Gothic components. An example of this is the cathedral clock tower, which sits apart from the main building, having been built later in the 16th century over ancient Roman ruins, with vertical extensions adding the top levels in the 18th century. Inside the church, multi-hued marble walls and columns, vibrant ceiling frescos with swirling gold acanthus leaves* and scenes of the aforementioned saints, baroque wall accents, and a number of side chapels in various states of decor, ornate wood inset paneling, etc. all combine for what appeared to me a somewhat restrained appearance (compared to most other church buildings I visited on this trip). A serene atmosphere pervaded the main building; since it was late afternoon on a weekday, only a handful of other visitors walked about. No fee for admission and I spent about 20 minutes here. Note there's a break in the daily hours so plan around it! Opening hours: 8:00AM- 12:30PM 4:30PM - 8:30PM *I was today years old when I learned that's what those curling leaves are called which form the basis of much classic Greek/Roman architectural and ornamental painting motifs! For example used atop Corinthian columns.
