This is place is a hidden gem, all the youngsters come for desserts and drinks, but they might not realize that they make pretty good food too because i just had one of the best HK style noodle soup at this restaurant, and I must say that I had noodle soup in other cafes and restaurants and nothing come close. I'm not a fan as I can't stand the smell of Durian and mochi. They close late at night so it's more convenient if you are hungry and crave for sweet desert. One disadvantage about this place is it's too far from Santa Ana and LA, take about 45 mins driving to get here. Kind service and various of food. This place is really very good. The desserts overall are about as good as you're going to find outside of Hong Kong. Plus they have very good regular food. In terms of Cantonese food we really like this place. Sometimes they seem a little bit lazy on the desserts - for example the mango pomelo sweet dessert soup is normally served with very finely separated pomelo and finely shaved ice. Ours had very large chunks of pomelo and large chunks of ice but really the flavor was good. The egg tarts are more creamy than eggy too - but that is personal preference. read more

Came here one night, and the first thing I did was to pick up a menu at the counter.. I literally have dozens of menus stashed away in my drawer.. I like how they circled their location out of all the other stores.. It's good for people with bad directional sense hehe.. I had their sweet almond egg white puree and my friend had the red bean and lotus seed soup. These are hot, sticky and gooey dessert soups that I would not recommend. They don't have the smooth and creamy consistency that that a good dessert soup would have. I also had the mango creme and the green tea and osmanthus creme custard.. The mango creme did not stand out; I would prefer it to have a stronger mango flavor and perhaps chunks of mango lost in creme. The green tea and osmanthus is not a bad combination. The two flavors are separated into different partitions. The osmanthus has a intriguing floral taste. I've also had the mixed fruits tapioca before, and I was initially disappointed then, because I didn't get the exact drink as shown in one of the pictures. There was a lot less chunks of fruit floating around. (I think there was mango and strawberry.) The fresh mango mochi also did not amaze me as the mango were not as sweet, and the mochi was not flexible enough. The service is not that great, because there are only about 2-3 people working. Sometimes it may take a while to get the check, or boxes or refills. Time to learn how to flag someone down! :) There is a small balcony outside for the smokers and vampires. The indoor seating is quite limited. I would say there is under 10 tables. read more

phoenix inn. post amazing chinese food destination spot du jour. you can sit outside on the patio if you wanna get some cancer, or you can sit inside where the good shit is made. i eyeball the huge vats of sesame paste goodness, oh what a good way to die if i were a dinosaur, and that was the tar. i've also been hipped to the taro in sticky black rice (estimation of name), which are little chunks of taro in a cocounty based sweetness with rice. gahhhh. bahhhh. and ofcourse i must steal two packets of mini pecan pies. or at least that's what they look like. it's chewy, it's bite sized, and oh so good. i go here for desserts. i'm sure the food is good, but why waste your time on food, when you can overdose on sugar and just let it ride out...... read more

I love their sago drinks! The ladies who work here are really nice. Because this is more of a to-go place, the service is really fast. My favorite drink is the watermelon+honeydew with sago drink. I'd get the mixed fruits if the fruits were not canned. Getting the melon one ensured the freshness of the drink. My favorite thing to do? I live in North Hollywood, but in the last 2 months (thanks to my "brother"/friend Mark) I have been making regular treks out to the Alhambra/Monterey Park areas to go to Half and Half and eat at different restaurants in that area. While we were waiting for some other friends to meet us, we wandered around the shopping plaza and found the Phoenix Bakery. Everything inside is SO pretty. I love mochi--and all their little packages looked so fresh and delicious! We made a mental note and came back after dinner (at Tasty Garden) . I picked up a variety plate of mochi. There was one large mochi of each kind :green tea, red bean, tarro and mango. They were beautifully presented, and I like that they dip them in shredded/dried coconut instead of just rolling them in rice flower to keep them from sticking. It's prettier and tastier! One complaint though, maybe I'm not used to other kinds of mochi?? I'm used to Japanese style mochi, and this mochi (not sure what kind it's supposed to be) didn't deliver for me flavor/texture wise, compared to the presentation value. This mochi was a little squishier than I like.One of the great things about mochi is the chewy texture, but this particular mochi was a bit too soft/gooey for me. AND the mochi itself, though colored to match the interior flavor was pretty tasteless. That combined with the texture made it a little weird. I liked that they filled the mochi with actual fruit though for the fruit flavored ones. A piece of mango in the middle of the mango mochi, and then finely ground/mashed tarro in a generous portion in the tarro mochi. That one was my favorite. I took the red bean and green tea balls to work to have as a snack the next day, but I guess I should have refrigerated them. They were all soft and icky when I tried to eat them. So I can't give an opinion on those other flavors. Still, there were lots of other tasty treats at Phoenix, maybe I'll have to try something different next time. read more

Well, this place is....different. NO DAIRY FREE DRINK OR DESSERT OPTIONS EXCEPT LIKE, PLAIN FRUIT TEA! (Duh) Can't you keep some vegan nondairy milk replacer or a bottle of Silk? Wow, I came here again last night to grab something sweet and this time ordered the mango soy custard and black jelly tapioca. Whoever invented the combination of soy tofu with mango and small tapioca is pure genius! I have never had this anywhere else including Hong Kong or up North and it is pure deliciousness. In place of the typical brown sugar syrup that this soy custard (tofu "fa") is usually served with, it is replaced with sweet soy milk (I think). Yum, that alone I am bumping this place up one star. Looking at the menu more closely this place has a lot of different items to choose from including steamed pears, which I want to try as well. I loved my taro drink it was soooooooo good. My friend had the cheesecake and he said it was soooooooooo good. I can't wait to try all the different treats. Since I am vegan it is an extra special treat that I get to go somewhere that has sweets that are edible for me. This place is really cute it has a display of all these beautiful treats. I'm just gonna get to the point. Here's what I bought:- - 2 durian coconut rolls ($3.95 each). Really soft roll w/ fresh durian. So good!! Highly recommend! If you are one of those people that can't stand aroma of durian, this roll is probably not for you. - 1 coconut mango roll ($3.95). Less sweet than durian roll. I love mango, but the durian roll is way tastier. - 1 box of green tea red bean pudding squares ($2.95). Pretty good and not too sweet. You can actually taste the green tea. Love it. - 1 box of custard sampler (aka assorted pudding squares) ($3.95). There are mango, green tea red bean, taro and the one with black sticky rice flavors. I like the taro one the most. - 1 taro pudding ($2.50). This is right next to all the drinks. It's VERY creamy and smooth. Might be too creamy for me. Not my fav. - 1 barley with lime drink ($2.75). Not very sweet and not sour at all. On my drive back home, I finished the liquid before I could get to the barley so I really tried sucking those barleys up through a boba straw with all my strength until my face turned red and then blue before decided to give up. I didn't try to scoop them up with the straw they gave me b/c the last time I did it, I nearly got into an accident. Lesson learned :p There's a parking lot in the back. Entrance is on Chapel Ave. Also, $10 minimum for credit card purchase. Just so you know, if you use a credit card, they will have to run next door to swipe it. read more

I usually get their black sesame pudding, almond jello, black rice w/coconut milk or iced blk tea/fruits.
