My friend and I were hanging out at Indian rock in Berkeley, hanging out. We were enjoying the scenery and talking about life and catching up. We hadn't seen each other in a year so it was nice to just relax and enjoy life and the sunset. I mentioned how my new roommate had an awesome soft/medium/hard boiled egg maker that was super simple to use. I told her how I loved using it to make my top ramen a little bit more restaurant quality. We talked about how much we loved Ramen, and I mentioned how Pho was healthier than ramen. That was the tip of the iceberg and we realized how hungry we were. I hopped on to yelp to find a place to go since I live in San Francisco and wasn't too familiar with the Berkeley area. Pho Le popped up as a suggested "hit and new" place so we decided to go here. We were not disappointed. The ambiance is very friendly, almost like you're at your family's having warm soup on a cold day. The temperature inside was perfect, I took my jacket off and was able to enjoy the entire meal nice and comfortably. I was able to hear the other patron's conversations but I didn't mind because I love people watching a little bit and they were definitely excited and boisterous in their conversation? I understood their excitement as soon as the food arrived. I ordered their specialty pho, the number 34 on their menu, with every meat they could put in it. My friend ordered the 36. It only took a few minutes for our food to prepared before it was brought out and I promise you we ate every morsel. The soup broth was delicious and piping hot as it came out. I slurped a little sample before I decided to add some bean sprouts just for some crunch. I put some of their brown sauce (sweet sauce or hoisin sauce) into a spoon to sample it and it is honestly one of my favorite things. I like to put my noodles and beef into their large spoon and drizzle some of that sauce onto it before I devour it. Though it was near closing time when we finished, the server still patiently waited and never made us feel like we were in a rush to get out. We got to enjoy a few more minutes of polite conversation before we decided we should leave and let them clean up. The service was prompt and courteous and especially respectful of our date. This place has been through some changes over the past few years. I recently went in for their lunch specials (11am-3pm Tues-Fri) and ordered the mongolian beef with fried rice. It also includes a small bowl of soup (dine in only) and an egg roll. The beef seemed undercooked because of how chewy it was and it had a lot more veggies than beef. Flavor was there but I didn't appreciate the texture of the meat at all. The fried rice was lacking in flavor for me. It didn't have any other veggies such as the usual chopped carrots or green onions as you would expect from fried rice. It just seemed like regular steamed rice made with a little soy sauce and barely any egg. I did enjoy the corn soup which is expected because that's not hard to mess up. I would try them again but maybe just for their pho and not any beef dishes. Everyone was super nice though. read more

We were so excited to try this place as there have been several incarnations of Chinese food in this locale. Happy to share that we thought the food was great and will definitely make it our new go to for Chinese (we did not try any of the Vietnamese dishes). The Mongolian Chicken was yummy and did not taste of burnt oil like many other Chinese restaurant dishes in Berkeley do. Same goes for the Singapore Noodles. The Greens (bok choy) and black mushrooms were super fresh and tasty. The potstickers were a normal size and were not doughy which was a pleasant surprise and the meat filling was seasoned well and flavorful. Looking forward to our next meal there as in our opinion, it is much better than Great Wall. Also, they did a great job remodeling the dining area. It is clean, light and inviting. Hoping that this will be the last Chinese restaurant in this location and hope Berkeley residents will give it a try. Perhaps next time, we might even try some of the Vietnamese dishes. read more

Ive come here for 4 weeks straight and ordered (80% of the time) Pho chicken and shrimp. I add a ton of pepper and some salt to my liking and its perfect. The homeemade limeade is great too! Thai tea also. read more

I have to say I ordered from this place because my husband wanted pho and our usual place wasn't opened so we decided to try it out. I wasn't expecting it to be much. But, I've been back since and is planning to continue going. I've had from here the mix seafood soup with the flat noodle, pho ga (chicken noodle soup), pong pong original fried chicken, and butter garlic fried chicken. The thing I like about the soups here is that it taste clean, but flavorful and not greasy like another reviewer said. And the fried chicken is alway fresh and crispy, but might be heavy on the batter for some people. And the person waiting at the desk was always wearing a mask . They have some super delicious pho! My go to is a combo with rare beef and brisket. The toppings are key - lots of lime and bean sprouts. I like that this broth was light and tasty- sometimes it can be too oily in other places - this was just right. Ordered take out and was incredibly pleased with the food! My boyfriend and I ordered the pong pong beef, the chicken with honey glazed walnuts, the Vietnamese egg rolls, and Singaporean fried rice. It was all delicious. Everything was well seasoned. The egg rolls were also crispy, and the beef and chicken also had great texture! I loved the fried rice, which had shrimp, pork, and chicken! Everything was so well priced as well. We got so much food! Despite the amount of quantity, quality was not sacrificed. I know where my go to Chinese food restaurant is now! Second time here. Surprisingly the service is much worse than the first time when it first opened. Didn't get greeted and seated after standing at the door for almost 5 mins ( too long time for such a small restaurant). Didn't get water or asked if ready to order after being seated for about 10 mins until we called on the server to order. Waited for 25 mins to get our food! And yet it was just 2 bowls of rice noodle. The one I got was much more oily when I had it last time. What I didn't understand is others got their food almost only 5 mins after ordering! We really enjoy coming to this place when we want pho or chicken wings. Their garlic butter chicken wings and pong pong chicken wings are some of the best wings I've had, and it is consistently good. I like their beef brisket stew with ho fun, which is a little wider noodle. Their pho is also good. A good, clean restaurant that is family owned and run. I have been craving pho for the longest time since moving up to the Bay Area and this place was like me hitting gold. I yelled YEUU! And drove as fast as I could to get the usual house Dac Biet with spring rolls and summer rolls with extra meat and noodles. But this place also offered flat wide noodles for the pho (which is my favorite kind of noodle) which imI have never seen before in a pho. Wonderful restaurant with an extensive menu of Vietnamese and some Chinese dishes. Both cuisines are done very well, always fresh, and highly recommended. Do not expect any corners cut here. My boyfriend and I saw all the great reviews on yelp and decided to try this place. We had the handmade pork and vegetable dumplings, pong pong chicken wings, beef pho, and the combination pan fried crispy noodles. Pho Le definitely gives other well-known local Asian places a run for their money. One of our favorites is Pho Ao Sen further north on San Pablo and the broth in the beef pho was just as good if not better than that restaurant. The noodles were also perfectly soft but chewy. We're also fans of Daimo in Richmond, and again, the crispy noodle dish was comparable if not better. The noodles were perfectly fried and packed with vegetables, meat, and seafood, and the flavor of the sauce was right on. The dumplings had a good dough to meat ratio and the dipping sauce was authentically good. I didn't care for the pong pong chicken wings but my boyfriend liked them. He thought they could've been spicier though. I liked this restaurant so much I'm bringing my Chinese mom back for lunch tomorrow! We have high hopes for Pho Le as this has been a cursed corner; every restaurant that's been there has closed within months. Hopefully Pho Le will stick around and break the curse! read more

I've seen this spot many times as I live close by so I thought I'd give it a try one day when I was craving pho and man I'm so happy I did! Their pho was sooo good - the broth was incredible I think possibly the best pho ga broth I've ever tasted. Very flavorful and the chicken was really lean and yummy. Came back the next week to try their lunch special and now I'm hooked!! I tried their ping pong chicken wings with fried rice and Kung pao prawns with chowmein for the lunch specials and both were amazing. Pros: This place gives you large portions of pho for under $10/bowl. The broth is ok. Finally a good pho place in the neighborhood closer than Pho Ao Sen! The Thai style fried shrimp rolls are good. They were deep fried and delicious. The portion is a good size, too! Cons: Service is unorganized and not great. In my two times here, I had to wait a while to be acknowledged by a waiter and had to ask for water twice. First time I tipped, second time I didn't, which means it was pretty bad. Don't expect great service here. This place would not be great for an introvert who wants to eat alone in peace. They don't have tables with privacy, and the way the tables are situated, everyone in the restaurant just ends up staring at each other while you eat, which is not a set-up I love. read more
