Conveniently located in the Waimalu Plaza, this hole in the wall is almost always busy and for good reason. You can never go wrong with their pho tai with rare steak. Each table has an assortment of sauces and chilis for you to use to your heart's, and stomach's, desire. Service is hit or miss on the friendliness scale but I've never had an overall bad experience. Pro tip: ask for the rare steak on the side so you can cook it in the broth yourself and determine how well-done you want to enjoy it! read more

After standing at the entrance for a bit, someone seated us. We sat for about 5-8 minutes without getting menus or drinks. Then, another family of six came in and got menus and drinks right away, and their orders were taken immediately. Feeling disappointed, I pulled out my phone and opened Yelp. A server finally noticed and came to check on us. I'd rate the hospitality 5/10. After ordering, it took about 15-20 minutes for our food to arrive, even though the family that came in after us got theirs first. I'd rate the timeliness 6/10. When our food arrived, it was very good. The summer rolls were perfectly balanced, and the pho was delicious. I'd give the food quality 10/10, but the portion size 8/10. Overall, I'd rate this place 7.5/10. The food was great, but the service was lacking. I'm not sure why we waited so long to be helped. Servers walked past us multiple times. I asked if they accept reservations , they said they don't, so it might have just been a coincidence that no one came to attend us right away. I have been on a small journey to find what I find as "true" Vietnamese food. What I've been looking for is food that taste like it came from my grandma's kitchen. This is it. I've tried to be more understanding with other restaurants using alternative ingredients due to being on the island, but I can never get past it. I mean, look at the bun bo hue. I have yet to find somewhere else that uses toppings like this. The flavor profile is also to my preference: light and fragrant. This is the old Youngs Fish Market in Kapolei Commons. At first I thought it was another vietnamese restaurant. However, I have been there 4 times, once for takeout and 3 sitting to have a meal. Each time I went, I discovered something different, and it was a good different. The pho soup broth was winnahs. Up there with the chinatown broths I have tried. But 2 things I gotta mention. First, the short rib pho. The meat was huge, and choke meat with the ono broth. I couldn't get enough of it. 2nd, and my most favorite is i think its called the 2 person special. Basically, its a huge plate of lettuce, basil, cucumber, pickled carrot/daikon, bean sprouts, vermicelli etc with bbq chicken or pork (I chose both) and it comes with the rice paper in a cool stand up tray thing with hot water. YOU MAKE UR OWN SUMMER ROLL! U got the hot sauce, plum sauce, chili garlic and whatevers. First time I ever tried it and it was DA BOMB. For those of us that wanna eat a lot with no/little starch, THIS IS IT! Check out the pic. The boss man came out and offered more but I had all I needed. We haven't been probably since the pandemic. Was surprised cuz the restaurant seems to have doubled in size. Service is friendly and food comes out immediately. The spring rolls are exceptional! Hot, crispy, fresh and delicious. The fresh squeezed lemonade was sweet and refreshing. Hubs ate all his combination and ate all the condiments on the plate. He removes all the Thai basil leaves plus what we learned was thinly sliced banana flower and green onions. It also says hot pot so hopefully we'll get to try it on a return visit. The missing star is because my spicy beef noodle soup had an unfamiliar smell and taste from other Bo bun hues at other places. Maybe that's how it's supposed to be. My eldest sister invited us to her home to help her with some minor DIY home repair replacements and discuss our upcoming travels to East Asia. While we gladly replaced her light bulbs, smoke alarm batteries, and bird holes and inspected for water damage around her house in preparation for our trip, our conversation turned to our favorite topic: FOOD. She was raving about a Vietnamese restaurant that she and her friends frequent in the 'Aiea neighborhood, which we had only heard about from fellow Yelp Friends but hadn't had the opportunity to try. Since we formerly lived in 'Aiea, we were familiar with the location of Pho 97 One & Hot Pot in the Waimalu Plaza Shopping Center and it didn't take us more than a 20-minute drive from my sister's house to the restaurant while thoughts of chả giò (Vietnamese fried spring rolls), phở, bún bò Huế (spicy beef noodle soup), and bún riêu cua (tomato-based broth crabmeat noodle soup) danced in our heads. My sister must have a "lead foot" because we took separate vehicles and left her house simultaneously, yet she texted us that she was already inside the restaurant when we arrived. It was a good thing she arrived a few minutes earlier than us since she snagged the last available table within this spacious restaurant. One of the servers had already placed menus, glasses of iced water, and eating utensils at our table, so we had to decide what to eat. Since my sister had eaten at this restaurant before, she recommended we start with a refreshing, light, and nutritious salad of jellyfish and shrimp, otherwise known as "Gỏi sứa tôm" instead of our usual appetizer of fried spring rolls or chả giò before indulging into hot noodle soups. FOOD: - Gỏi sứa tôm (Jellyfish and Shrimp Salad): this refreshing, delicious, and textural salad is composed primarily of rehydrated jellyfish strips and boiled shrimp. The seafood sat atop a bed of shredded cabbage and topped with mint, coriander, fried shallots, peanuts, and drenched in-house special dressing. The house special dressing was mildly acidic and balanced sweet, sour, spicy flavors from the signature fish sauce and spicy bird's eye chili peppers. The contrasting gelatinous yet soft, crunchy mouthfeel of the jellyfish and tender boiled shrimp to crisp shredded cabbage excited our tastebuds and appetites. The salad was generously portioned, and although flavorful, we took home half. $14.50 - Phở Dặc Biệt (Special Combination): my husband was looking for a hearty serving of phở with "the meats." The special combination featured slices of beef cuts from flank, sirloin, or eye of round beef balls and tripe. The beef-based phở broth was transparent, non-fatty, and savory. But, wow! The portion of rice noodles was humongous. As my husband said, it seemed like this bowl was bottomless, even for a medium portion. $14.95 - Bún bò Huế (Spicy Beef Noodle Soup): I was on the fence between the bún bò Huế and crab meat noodle soup when my sister suggested that I get the spicy beef noodle soup because she planned on getting the non-spicy-crab-meat-noodle soup or bún riêu cua. I wasn't sure how spicy this version would be, but I took the chance to order it without asking for a mild spice level. I was pleasantly surprised with the spice level that didn't make my mouth burst into flames, which allowed me to enjoy the harmonious flavors of spicy, sweet, sour, salty, and fragrant lemongrass. I added fresh herb garnishes and even a couple of jalapeño pepper slices to enhance the noodle soup further. My sister tried a spoonful of the broth but immediately started to cough from the spice level and steaming hot soup temperature. Hmm, I guess my spice level tolerance has increased over the past. This noodle soup bowl was also generously portioned and chock full of beef shank slices, chả lụa (pork sausage or Vietnamese ham), rice vermicelli, and aromatic and savory beef broth. I struggled to finish even though my stomach had been growling from hunger. $17.00 - Bún riêu cua (Crab meat Noodles in Tomato-based broth): my sister chose this more mildly flavored noodle soup as the minced freshwater crab meat, shrimp, fried shrimp, chả lụa or pork sausage, eggs, tofu, tomatoes, and rice vermicelli enhance its clear tomato-chicken broth. She amped up the bún riêu shrimp flavors with a squeeze of pungent mắm tôm or Vietnamese fermented shrimp paste. The pungent-smelling yet umami-tasting condiment, fermented shrimp paste, isn't for a timid palate as it takes a bit of acquiring, much like eating Roquefort or Gorgonzola blue cheese. However, we grew up in an Asian household, so we're accustomed to the fermented seafood or shellfish smells. After adding the shrimp paste, my sister enthusiastically dove into her noodle soup and ate everything. $17.00 We look forward to returning to the 'Aiea neighborhood again to expand our Vietnamese dining experiences with more menu items at this restaurant. read more

OK!!! Phô is my jam! Let's see how well this place stacks-up to others around the island. First Off, the ambiance is super chill. No need to dress in Suit & Tie. I'd go in a t-shirt, short and your favorite pair of footwear. We ordered the BBQ Pork Rolls. This dish did not disappoint. It was Flavorful... I never use the peanut sauce. I tell them not to bring it or it'll just be sitting idol on my table. I always do a half hoisin and half chili oil and mix. that's what I use to dip these bad boys in. Try it! Super Yummy!!! The Chicken Banh Mi was exceptional. The bread, fresh... Time for the pho to arrive. I ordered the Combo Special. I believe it comes with the addition of triple, which I love. I tasted the broth before adding my own concoction. Super Clean, Super Tasty & All The Right Profiles...Now, time add the Hoisin, Chili oil, Thai Basil, Lemon Juice and maybe a few sprouts... PERFECTION! (kissing the tips of my fingers)! lol I did something that I haven't done in a Pho Restaurant for a while now... I ordered another Main dish... The Mussels with Ginger in Black Bean sauce. Usually, its Pho and Done! I just got back from Auckland, New Zealand where they have the best mussels in the world.. So, I wanted to continue and satisfy my ongoing cravings for bivalve molluscs. Because it was an entrèe, it came with 2 scoops of white rice. The meat on the mussels were of good size and it soaked-up all the flavors of the sauce. I'd probably order this dish again. so good. I was introduced to Pho 97 one & Hot Pot by my girlfriend when we decided to go during the evening on a week day. The food was great and the inside of the restaurant was very nice, my only complaint was the service. I ordered the rare beef and meatball pho, the broth was so good with out any toppings at all, but I still decided to add some siracha, hoisin, and chili sauce out of habit.the beef was soo good and the meat balls had a very good texture. Mixed with the nice size table we sat at the experience was overall very nice. The only issue I had was our server came off kind of rude and was very short with us and everybody else that came in. My wife and I love this spot and regulars here. Our favorite waitress is always so friendly, remembers our orders, and asks how we are doing. The restaurant has two seating areas, and one of the bigger Vietnamese seating capacity. The first is more for 2-4 parties, where as the other side has tables set up for larger parties as well. We typically go there for our favorites, wife loves their papaya salad and I love the combination pho. When hungry we add in spring rolls and my wife and son loves the sweet potato tapioca. Their pho broth isn't heavy and lighter more aromatic flavor. They give healthy portions of meat and veggies which I love. My secret which may not be a secret is always to request the sliced beef on the side. I like mine just a hair over rare so the meat is still soft and juicy. So I put in prices into the broth for a quick cook as I eat. Another great thing that we love so the food always comes out so quick! The only reason it's not a 5 and went with 4 is service. With the exception of our favorite waitress, sometimes the others have the usual slight language disadvantage. So at times it has lended its hand to orders being wrong or what some would perceive to be rude service. Other than that again love this place place for our usual cravings. read more

**New Location : Kapolei, HI** Pho 97 One recently opened here in Kapolei Commons (located across from Target and sharing the same lot as Bank of Hawaii) after not being able to renew their Waimalu Lease. Sad for the Waimalu area, but good for us West side residents. Compared to nearby pho places I think this is a good run for your money. The food quality, quantity, options, taste and customer service is superb! We went in for lunch and was greeted & seated right away. Ordered our meals, wait time wasn't bad (~15 minutes) and everything came out hot, fresh and ready to eat (hence the pictures of already eaten food lol). We had ice coffee, Thai tea, spring rolls, beef Stew, pork banh min & Kalbi + shrimp plate and everything was tasty. Also, right now for their grand opening they are offering 15% off until Feb. 28, 2025. So all of this yummy food came out to $53! (Excluding the tip). Our stomach and wallet was happy lol. Like I mentioned before it shares the lot with Bank of Hawaii, but is located in the far corner (taking the old Young's Fish Market spot). If you don't frequent the area it can easily be missed so I do hope you can find it after reading this review. I hope more people know about their relocation & if not, please tell a friend. Given that it's in their name, you would think their Pho tasted good. It was the 2nd worst pho I've ever had, first being The Asian House in Hilo (that shut down). Like many reviews, the food was bland and had no taste. I had to pretty much add my own seasoning from the hoison, chili sauce, and sriracha. The only thing that was good was the fried spring rolls appetizer. The pho tasted like hot water, there was no "potency" to it or flavor. Given they are at the kapolei commons, I don't think these guys are going to last. Their pho soup was a 2/10, 2 since the soup was at least hot. If the name of your restaurant contains the word Pho in it, at least make sure it tastes good. Ambience was silent and awkward, servers never checked on us if the food was alright or tasting good, water only got offered to be refilled when we were asking for the check and take out boxes. Won't be coming back. My chef friend mentioned the lack of flavor from the pho broth was probably due to the bones not being boiled long enough, the bones being too cold, or old. Just no flavor at all that it left me completely dissatisfied and disappointed. Someone mentioned that the pho tasted "clean", yes probably because it was just water. read more
