Simple exterior belies rich sumptuous flavors and farm to table freshness to put chez Penisse en garde. Went looking for affordable lobster roll, but switched to 10" wood fired pizzas. Leave your NY pizza attitude at the curb. Your favorite local never fail pizza joint is probably fine, but don't let that put you off trying this spot. We had a Pesto pizza with garlic scapes and zucchini from their own certified organic garden, and a chorizo, feta, and kalamata olives pizza, both on the lightest, thick and fluffy pizza dough in irregular shapes. This is not thin and crispy, but neither is it the thick, pasty, lazy dough you might fear. As I said, it's an unassuming place to look at. Our picnic table was in what looks like a car shed where the wood oven is installed among some other equipment. Pizzas were about $13 each and were not small. The three of us brought back left overs. Phil's niece has been running the place for the last few years. She is very friendly and efficient. Last summer when I ordered a lobster roll, I found that it was different from years past. Instead of using small chunks of meat (from the body portion of the lobster, I believe), they are using the more traditional Iarger chunks of claw and tail meat. I chose the mayo based dressing. It was very tasty. The other choice was a drizzle of melted butter I enjoyed my lobster roll, but I did really miss the old recipe. The price has gone up significantly. I have not had a chance to sample the wood fired pizza. I absolutely love their whoopie pies. read more

My wife and I have been stopping at Phil's & Mike's for almost 25 years while we are camping at Shore Hills! After we are almost all set up at the campsite. I toss the keys to my wife and say Honey go get us those great lobster rolls for lunch at Phil's! Most of the time the line is short. You can't beat the prices. My wife gets us two each and with a bag of chips it makes for a great lunch back at the campsite with an ice cold beer We look forward to it every time that we are in the area! read more

We were driving from Boston to Maine and excited for some lobster rolls. We saw Phil and Mike's large sign while we were driving and stopped. The "restaurant" is really more like a home kitchen and a hollowed-out garage with tables to sit and eat. Love it! Unfortunately the lobster rolls weren't great. I have no idea how this place has 4 stars, especially with all the great lobster roll places around. One positive: they put a lot of lobster in the rolls, and they butter/grill the rolls the traditional way, which is nice. However, the rolls they use aren't traditional lobster roll rolls. Also, their more egregious mistake is that the lobster is chopped! I'm always very skeptical of a place that chops their lobster. Why not leave the large, delicious chunks of lobster intact? Why ruin it? When places do this I immediately think "are you hiding something?" Maybe they're not using tails and only the claws, which is a big no-no. Either way, the roll was below average. Luckily their rolls are only $10, which should have been a sign. But, paying the traditional $15-25 for a lobster roll would have been painful for this weak of a roll. Besides the cheap price, some other positives: super nice host, and the sweets are tasty. read more

Oh my gosh, delicious food from a clean kitchen at a great price! I got a lobster roll meal with a whoopie pie, Moxie, and chips, for only $15! The roll was the same size as what other local lobster shacks offer, at a much better price! In fact, we had chowder, seafood salad sandwiches, and everything was mouthwatering. Pleasant owners. Outdoor cafe seating. They take credit!! Only drawback was a cramped ordering space and the menu was not easily visible (specials written on index cards taped to counter). Worth the hassle. Happy to give them more of my business so they can invest in a menu board. ;) read more

Went here Saturday and Sunday. We were told by a friend of ours this was the place to go for Lobster Rolls. Little did we know, that was a total understatement. On Saturday my girlfriend and I ordered two a piece-- and they were the largest, tastiest lobster rolls we had while staying in Boothbay. Not sold yet? They were half the price of everyone else's! I'm huge into customer service. The atmosphere was very friendly and inviting. We decided to come back Sunday! They were fresh out of Lobster, sadly, so we got some hot dogs. Being me, and being really clumsy, I went to sit down and eat and I dropped my hotdogs on the ground by mistake. Really good laugh, not so much to eat, however. I went back inside to order a couple more-- and the gentleman insisted I didn't have to pay and he would make me two more and bring them out to me. I was very appreciative! I always look forward to seeing Phil. He's a typical, somewhat surly Maine-er who has very few words for you. I guess he figures all the signs outside speak for themselves? You can eat for pretty cheap here, unless you go fancy and eat a lot. 3 poor boy lobster rolls (have lobster, shrimp, and crab, I think) for $9, or 1 lobster roll (100% lobster) for $4. A cup of pretty amazing chowdah for $3. The rolls themselves are FRESH. Phil bakes them right there in his little kitchen. He coats the outside with something that resembles butter and puts them in a sandwich press with whatever filling you get, and they come out warm, but JUST crispy on the outside a little. His whoopie pies are to die for. I tried the blueberry pie once, which was fine, but the crust was soft instead of flaky or crispy - may have been related to the fact that it was in a plastic container, and the moisture from the blueberries did a number on the crust. Four stars for Phil! One for using Maine seafood all over the place. One for that crispy, buttery crust on the lobster rolls. One for his amazing chowder (and bisque). One for the whoopie pies. But minus one... for the fact that he microwaved (!!) the American (!!!) cheese and haddock on my haddock sandwich. (There's no excuse for American cheese in the first place. Stopped by a couple of years ago and still love seeing the sign as we come into Boothbay for our annual vacation. Their lobster rolls are more lobster salad, so don't compare them to other places - they are really good in their own right. Haven't tried anything else, but the smells coming from the small kitchen are always good and a quick place to stop on your way out of town. read more

YELPER Beware!!!!!! Saw the sign advertising 9.95 lobster roll, it was worse than we could have ever imagined. I should have known when we asked him how much lobster was in it, to which his only reply was "9 dollars worth of lobster." This is the only place i found that wouldnt tell me how much lobster it has, a big TELL. The kitchen looked clean, so we gave it a try anyways. Now on to the damage....We got 2 lobster rolls and 2 seafood roll specials. The specials came with 2 seafood rolls and a cup of chowder, sounds good right? The lobster rolls are LOBSTER SALAD!!!!! The majority is mayo and it is a shredded mess, I don't even know if it was lobster on it. The seafood rolls were suppose to have snow crab and lobster, it was a seafood salad fiasco. Tasted so fishy, pretty sure it had to be imitation "krab". My mom couldn't even eat it. The chowder was ok. This is not in any way reason enough to come remotely close to this place. I think this is ny first bad review on yelp, I don't like to trash restaurants but this warning needs to be said. This was a trainwreck lobster roll experience, sorry phil. read more

I have been coming here for 10+ years. Started when it was just Phil the baker, a crusty Mainer who I could hardly understand but he was a nice guy and the food was great. Still is. Was never a big fan of the standard lobster role so I most often get the seafood sandwich which are about 3 for $10. Seasoned just right. Used to be called a poor boy. Once in a while I'll get the lobster role which is chopped lobster (which I prefer to the large chunks) or a crab role. Phil's son Mike has taken over now that Phil has passed. Mike is a nice guy also and has been keeping the tradition. BYO beer or wine and have a nice sandwich on the porch. read more
