It's located in the heart of Makati, a stone's throw away from the Peninsula and one flyover away from BGC. I have a friend that teaches here and the other day she made me sit-in on one of her classes. All her students were made up of men and women who looked like they carefully curated their outfits right before class. I was in jeans and a plain shirt so you can imagine just how much I stuck out. Entering, what will welcome you is a very classy lit narrow stairway leading to the actual school, which is actually....surprisingly small. It wasn't a bad thing. In fact, I gotta hand it to them for keeping it small. It's Economical, since the school only accepts a few students at one time. They have a lot of packages ranging in levels, from basic to advanced modeling, and it covers a lot of aspects about the industry. You can say, it will teach pretty much everything you'd need to know to start out on those runway or commercial modelling career. I never got to enroll here because it was pretty expensive, and beyond my budget. I chose another school in fact, because I think the course they offered fit my needs more than Master's. But the modeling direction of this school's graduates is much more for ones who dream to become the next big name in the industry. Meanwhile, I just wanted to learn about modeling so I can direct my own models. Heh.

The curriculum is structured and easy to follow. But bear in mind that if you are taking intensive, try not to miss the class otherwise you might stay behind the agenda. However, as frequent traveler, I do hope AFM can provide more flexible options to make-up classes. I would like to mention there is a cafe in the ground floor behind the reception area. Their croissant, pain au chocolat and quiche are delicious with faite price, rare to find in Manila for French food. Love it! One more important thing, the library in AFM is awesome, the library manager is extremely friendly and helpful. Do come to take a visit!

I really wanted to get…read moreinto either one of the top 4 universities here in the Philippines, but I was so "praning" that time so I thought I would just fail everything. Because of this mentality, I decided to do research on the different review centers that they had in Manila and I stumbled upon LSC. LSC is said to provide the most comprehensive and highest quality tutorials and review services to incoming college students and they were one of the cheapest review centers during that time. I was able to meet the requirements to avail of the discount. I applied with five of my friends so I only had to pay 8,000 pesos for the review services and the complementary books. The venue for the tutorial classes were really comfortable. It was big enough to accommodate all of the students and the class room was air conditioned. The instructors were also very efficient and helpful and they would often give us tips on how we should answer our CETs.

I studied in another country for one year of college, but since I was in an international school, there was some overlapping of curriculum, and when I came back to the Philippines I wasn't delayed or anything. I still missed a lot of lessons though, especially the ones in Filipino and Social Studies, so I chose to enroll in a review center over the summer with my brother. I remember the base rate for the package we availed of being P10,000, but since we enrolled with a bunch of friends it was brought down to around P8,000 I think. Our lessons were 5 afternoons a week, for 4 hours, and I really learned a lot! The instructors were helpful and taught well, and they gave tests at the end of every session so we would know where to focus our studies on. The books you get from enrolling are helpful by themselves, too.

But I'm really there for the air conditioning; Compared to the rest of the University's old buildings, CAL's is fairly new and you can see it in their modern architecture and design; The best thing about a college of writers and poets is the graffiti and posters on the bulletin boards; It's right next to the Faculty Center (FC) so you could easily consult with most GE professors. It's also usually a venue for art installations and galleries. CONS: It's right beside Katag, the canteen at the basement of FC. But you could find it pretty crowded during lunch hours and it can get pretty hot and stuffy inside. TL;DR: Get your artsy fix just by being in CAL, whether that be for a class or just general tambay.

Quezon City Science High School, known as QCSHS or just Kisay, is a government high school right…read morebehind SM North EDSA. It's my alma matter too, so shout-out to everyone who always had to walk by the urine-smelling back side of this gargantuan mall just to get to our gates. We all know how it feels, even the trike drivers. PROS: It's a science high school, so there's an extra focus on the math, science, and technology curriculum. If your kid's strengths lean on these particular fields, and you'd like free tuition (plus the P500.00 or so plus in fees) for the next few years, then give Kisay a try; Academics are given serious focus on this school. Unlike the regular curriculum, students need to maintain an average of 85 on all subjects to stay in Kisay, so you know everyone focuses on their studies. Plus, a myriad of extra-curricular activities help develop well-roundedness and leadership skills. CONS: There's an entrance exam that a prospective Xientian (Yup. That's what we call ourselves.) has to pass in order to gain a slot in this school. And that competition is fierce. We're talking about kids who took Pisay exams too, plus the now-majority of students coming from big, rich schools who are backed up with every tutorial and review center their young 12-year-old minds can take. Talk about "needy" and "underprivileged;" Being a government-run school, the issues of administrative corruption and faulty facilities are predominant, even for a science high school. TL;DR: In the end, it's still a public school. But with the help of PTA and alumni donations, and a sincerely eager learning atmosphere from the faculty and students, Kisay still somehow fares well.
