Chua Phat Da is a Pokéstop.

Parking is a pain a butt, in general. The temple is small, but the monks and nuns here do speak some English, but mainly Vietnamese. Public bathrooms are very visible (most of them you kinda have to figure out or ask where they are). I love their vegetarian food that they sell here. During the major Buddhist and Vietnamese holidays like Buddha's birthday and Vietnamese New Year, I feel like they are more organized and can aid more people. Also, during this time, sometimes they server free vegetarian meals, and there's a lot of varieties to eat from -- although I find their food salty, for my liking. Not enough places to sit and eat when it gets super busy. For those of you who are into Pokémon Go... Yes, the Phat Da Temple is a PokeStop. I do see the Sunday school children on their phones playing Pokémon Go and attaching lure modules (I don't blame them).

We didn't meet any monks during our visit, but the people were pleasant. They have a lot of separate areas with different statues of deities and different places where you burn incense and pray. For someone like me who's not accustomed to the rituals, I found it a bit confusing to bounce from room to room, not knowing which deity was responsible for governing what. I was told for someone who's a devout Buddhist, there's an order to the various prayer locations and each statue of a deity has a different meaning, so you know who you're praying to. It looks like I need a few lessons on becoming a Buddhist.

The interior is clean and bright. The monks are very kind and always smiling. Occasionally you can eat vegan food here and the food is cooked well. ------------------------- Today, I went to the temple for a *special & big event*. It was loud and fun! The tables were nicely spread out and everyone was having a good time. There were water bottles already on the table and coke available as well. We had two plates, a napkin, chopsticks, & a spoon. There were so many dishes-- I think 9 different ones came out. Which were all made by different temples. The Monks came around and said hi to each table as well.

It's important to know that this is not free like traditional temples. They describe it as "modern Buddhism," which means they charge $15 per class. The first time I attended, I noticed a donation box and assumed it was donation-based. On my second visit, I felt uncomfortable when I was asked after the session whether I had signed up or paid in advance. It caught me off guard, and I ended up paying out of anxiety due to the lack of clarity. My main concern is that it presents itself in a way that feels similar to traditional Buddhism (the num outfit and statues), but operates differently by charging per class. In my experience growing up around Buddhist temples, meditation was always offered freely, with donations being optional. That said, the environment and community here are positive--it's just important for others to understand that it is structured as a paid class rather than a donation-based temple setting. I prob won't be returning due to this reason because I like hot yoga so at least paying for a workout and meditation all in one. Thanks for the experience here anyway Kadampa!
