In fact, I…read morecan really recommend "James Well Beloved" dog food...it really helped with my dog's digestion...if you know what I mean ;-) The store is cramped with a lot of stuff and some might think that it could need a little update when it comes to the decor, but...I like it just the way it is. In a way, it resembles the personalities of the people who work and shop here: down-to-earth! That being said, it's not a store for Yuppies, where you can buy fancy-shmancy (useless) stuff...it's the real deal. However, I do very much dislike the fact that they stopped delivering the food; that was a nice service, but since it wasn't really cost-effective for them, they stopped doing that...and so now you can see me schlepping a big bag of dog food every couple months up Highgate Hill. A nice little feature is the black cat that usually sits on top of the cash register...I bet she's the Queen of the store!

My kids love going to look at all the animals, and usually take a bit of bribery to get them out of the shop. I recently discovered the adoption centre at the very back of the store, will probably have to keep the kids away from that bit or will end up coming home with a few!! On a couple of occasions now, I have visited the store during my lunch-break to buy pet food. But on taking the items to the till to pay. I have been served (if you can call it that!), by a young lady who makes you feel a 'nuisance' by your mere presence! And cannot muster-up a ' hello', 'please' or 'thank-you' during the payment process! Pets at Home, may not be as cheap or local. But at least you are greeted with some politeness and actually feel like the 'CUSTOMER'.

I ordered a cat scratch tree which included a hammock and sleeping box etc. The plush material it's covered is cheap rubbish which falls apart like wet tissue paper leaving the hammock unusable and bits of fluff shedding everywhere off the rest of it. Had to remove it in case the cat swallowed bits and choked. I complained within a few days of receiving at and enclosing photos and asked for a refund which they refuse to give me. "Tracey" has emailed me saying all i'm entitled to is a replacement cover for the hammock which is pretty pointless as it's obviously in the same cheap material. She copies bits of consumer regulations in her emails and tries to twist them to make her point, saying the manufacurer is entitled to offer a repair and she's not responsible as the retailer even though I pointed out that the legislation actually means i'm entitled to a refund as I rejected the goods straight away as substandard. She also expects me to pay for return delivery (of a 9kg cat tree!!) when i've already paid for it to be delivered to me, so she can inspect it and report to the supplier. Never had such a disgraceful service from any shop online or otherwise, they've no idea about customer service and seem to think their Terms and Conditions negate Consumer Law-don't give them your money, there are plenty of other traders out there who won't mess you about, just wish i'd done a search for reviews before i ordered. She's twice said she's arranged a courier collection and then cancelled it, the last time saying i couldn't return the item as i don't have the original box. I've since complained to Consumer Direct who agreed with me that i was entitled to reject the goods under both the sale of goods act and distance selling regulations and that not having the original box made no difference at all to my rights. I sent her their advice and she now admits she was wrong about the original packaging being needed, but still won't give a refund until she's sent the material off to the supplier to inspect and report-meanwhile i'm still out of pocket when I was entitled to an immediate refund as I wasn't satisfied with the standard of the goods they delivered. It's annoying having to give them even the 1 Star the site makes you give as they don't even deserve that.

I tried to buy a cats flea comb. They are kept behind the counter for some reason, every other…read morenon essential item you can pick up from the shelves. I managed to ask a passing member of staff who pulled one from behind the counter and unceremoniously put it in my hand and quickly walked off. The comb isn't what I needed I wanted one with a handle so you can dunk in water and drown the fleas. There were no worming tablets on display either. The queue at the same counter was not moving. I was in a hurry so I walked out. what is the point of keeping these things behind the counter. I will go to Amazon for pet supplies. I'm disappointed with this shop.

It appears you are unable to buy fish if Pets at Home's equipment is faulty! Ridiculous! The man at the till however,was great!!

There aren't many other animals there. This is definitely more of a pet supplies shop rather than a pet shop where you can buy a pet. Even so, it's well stocked with all the basics. Live food like crickets is ordered once a week so it's best to place an order if you need it regularly. Parking can be difficult in this road but there are lots of nearby residential roads where you should be able to stop for a while.

Before I discovered this pet supplies store, I was buying from Amazon, which was often sold out of the only type of litter I liked. When I found this store, I saw they had a huge selection of everything, from dry and wet cat food, to raw treats to litter, toys...you name it. Prices are really competitive - beats or matches what I have found on Amazon but without having to wait for shipping. Their membership card is free and a portion of the store's proceeds go to charity of your choice. You can also find small pets here: small birds and parrots, gerbils, rabbits and chinchillas. They also have dog grooming. Those who say you can get a better deal at Tesco obviously aren't picky about the quality of products they are getting for their pets. I don't buy my cat any processed junky crap you find at Tesco and Sainsburys - I once had a cat develop IBS as a result of that sh*tty food. I only buy grain free organic now with as few ingredients as possible. I want my cat to live a long healthy life and stores like this make it possible. The staff were very knowledgable and attentative with helping customers. They had a vast selection of pets and supplies to suit anything you would need. The layout of the store was fantastic, everything was clearly displayed so you wouldn't be walking around aimlessly for what you are shopping for. As for prices, I was pleased that everything was at a descent price compared to some other places I visited. The only bad point I have is that they were out of rats at that time, but with it being close to christmas It was understandable so I wasn't upset.
