The 7 Hard Lessons I Learned (In My Opinion)…read more I'm writing this review for you -- a pet owner who cares enough about your family member to read reviews before making an informed decision about your pet's life and health. I hope sharing our experience helps you avoid what we went through, which would make the nearly $2,000 we spent worth it. The moral of this story? Seriously consider an independent vet, and think carefully before choosing a clinic that's part of a large corporate group. CBC News has covered the pressure corporate vet clinics face to prioritize profit, and that context helped me understand our experience. Our dog had persistent ear infections, severe skin inflammation, and yeast-related symptoms that were repeatedly treated as allergies. He received ear medication, flea medication, and an allergy injection (Cytopoint). We were told it can take time to work, but we saw no reduction in itching or inflammation. As symptoms worsened, we were told the clinic was too busy to see him for over a week, despite accepting new clients. During that time, we asked whether infection could be involved and whether antibiotics or antifungals should be considered. We were advised against them and told to continue allergy management. Eventually, we went to an emergency vet (emergencies only). Our dog was given antibiotics, and for the first time, we saw real improvement -- especially with the yeast symptoms. We also had him on Open Farm grain-free food, consistent with what we had repeatedly said about his severe grain allergy. We finally felt relief. We returned to the original clinic only to address his remaining ear infection. I explained the improvement and the grain-free food. The vet recommended a prescription "hypoallergenic" diet described as containing hydrolyzed wheat, stating our dog needed grains for heart health. Trusting the medical advice we were paying for, I bought the food. After switching foods, our dog reacted severely. When I read the label myself, I saw that while it contained hydrolyzed wheat protein, the first ingredient was rice -- a grain -- and not hydrolyzed. Getting Fired? I returned to explain the reaction and that our dog was worse again. After later reviewing the records, I saw that our dog's grain allergy had been documented multiple times, yet dismissed as "unlikely." There was no apology, no acknowledgment, and no refund for the $168 bag of food. Instead, the clinic arranged a food exchange through the manufacturer. We gave the replacement food to a family in need, as it was not appropriate for our dog. At that point, the food and nearly $2,000 in treatments had resulted in no lasting improvement. We were back at square one. I left calmly and said only, "Your actions are dishonourable." After that, we were informed management would be meeting to discuss "firing us as a client." From my perspective, this reflected the corporate culture at play. Ultimately, it is my dog's life and health that is directly affected by this corporate culture. I didn't wait to be fired. I asked a friend for a recommendation and went to an independent vet. What a paradigm shift. The new vet reviewed the records (including the "non-compliant" label and the documented grain allergy), prescribed antibiotics and antifungal medication, and explained the infection was too severe for allergy management alone. Our dog improved and recovered. The 7 Lessons I Learned 1. Always request and read your pet's medical records. 2. "Non-compliant" can mean advocating when something isn't working. 3. Symptom control is not treatment of root cause. 4. Timely access to care matters. 5. Always read ingredient labels yourself. 6. Corporate culture can influence medical decisions. 7. Independent vets can offer clarity and resolution. Thank God for vets who remain independent and can make caring for their furry patients their main mission.

Dr. Lindsay Prior is our veterinarian and she is excellent. If this review was for her alone, it…read morewould be a full 5 stars. I can't say enough good things about her. She is amazing. HOWEVER, the Sherbrooke Heights Animal Hospital is so stressful to deal with. If I had any another option, I'd go somewhere -anywhere- else in a heartbeat. They only have ONE DOCTOR who is trained and capable of treating rats/pocket pets. So, for example, I called this morning (Monday) because one of my boys is sick, but Dr. Prior is off until FRIDAY, which is A WEEK AWAY. That is unacceptable -- not that Dr. Prior is off (obviously), but that they don't have anyone else to take care of these kinds of patients when she isn't there. And it has nothing to do with the Covid 19 pandemic because it's been like this for YEARS. When I asked why they don't hire another doctor who is able to treat small animals when their ONLY small animal doctor isn't working, the woman Eva (who we've had lots of other issues with in the past) got passive-aggressive and placed me on an angry hold for so long that I had to hang up and call back later. Eva is a vet tech that we have asked the clinic not to use for our rats. She always had to get my partner and I to hold and restrain our rats because she couldn't do it. Maybe she doesn't like rats? But if that's the case, she should check her speciesism at the door or find work in a different field. She was incompetent in handling our boys and gave us incorrect information on several occasions. That's not okay. So now, we have it on our record that she is not allowed to go treat our boys, but there's not much we can do when she's the one answering the phone. The bottom line is that I highly recommend Dr. Prior but the hospital she works for is a massive disappointment. They may be good for treating cats and dogs, but that's it. If you live in Peterborough and you have rats as pets, you're screwed if the one and only doctor isn't working. They charge more than every other clinic but offer far worse service.

I was well informed on what tests were being conducted and why and they emphasized that I am in control all along the way, without judging me based any financial decisions that were required. I prefer them to my regular vet, hands down. My final visit was to say goodbye to my pet, and they still made it palatable and respectful. I would fully recommend them and bring my other pets there without hesitation.

Hang on to your wallet Not a good place for your pet especially if you don't have $$$. They are part of a consortium, apparently tied into many of the local Vets who are now, coincidentally, closed Saturdays as well as Sundays, leaving a pet owner no other choice but to go to the Kawartha Emergency Clinic. Be prepared to shell out at minimum $1000.00 since walking through the front door will cost you $185.00 for a short meeting with the Vet, if there's one available, or a technician. Thank God for the emergency services offered by Port Hope animal Hospital on Dale road who we just discovered recently. They do not mark up costs for emergency services. I only wish I had found them much sooner . I could have saved thousands( $1000 ) and most of all been confident in the care my pets were given.
