I've been putting off getting my wisdom teeth out for a few years now -- not the smartest idea since two of mine were impacted (ouch). Unfortunately for me, it caught up with me two weeks ago and I had the most ridiculous pain in my mouth, I mean I couldn't even bare to eat hummus and pita bread. That Friday I spent the entire morning calling every oral surgeon in the city who takes my insurance and after an hour of phone calls I nearly gave up. The last call I made was to Dr. Lyu's office and I'm so glad I called them. I went in for a consult and was greeted by an assistant who took my x-rays. After that I met with Dr. Lyu who explained what my x-rays showed and told me it would be best if we took all 4 wisdoms out at once then I made an appointment for the following week. I arrive the day of surgery SO ANXIOUS. The assistants did a great job at talking to me and calming me down. Dr. Lyu came in, explained to me what he was doing (giving me sedatives) and before I know it, I'm passed out. I wake up (it literally feels like 2 minutes have passed) and I basically don't remember anything at all after that, but I know that later that day I was in pain and so tired. Dr. Lyu gave me an ice pack head wrap to wear to keep the swelling down (no chipmunk cheeks, YAY!) and pain killers, of course. It's been 4 days now, I just had my checkup, and I'm healing up perfectly. Let's talk about how I had my wisdom tooth extracted yesterday, and am in no pain today! Dr. Lyu has to be the best oral surgeon in the Bay Area. I went in for a consultation on Monday. He did some x-rays and told me that, yea, I need to get my wisdom tooth out... like now! It was severely infected, impacted, gross, etc. He is extremely nice and pleasant. His staff is great as well. Prescribed me some pain meds and antibiotics (thank God for those!). The infection was healing up nicely by Friday, when I had the surgery. I arrived Friday morning around 8, and was taken back to get all hooked up to the machines. I was clearly nervous because the heart rate monitor was going a mile a minute. They came in and gave me oxygen. And then they had to find my veins for the IV...which is always tough for me! He poked around a little on the inside of my elbow, and then found a nice, big one on my wrist. Thankfully, needles don't bother me, and the extra pinch he said I'd feel (and apologized for!) wasn't that bad. Next thing I know, I'm awake and the surgery is over. It's about 9:15. Boyfriend was there to hear all of the post-op instructions. I was very groggy. Fast forward to being at home, and my jaw was just a little sore. Went in and out of sleep a few times, popped about 3 painkillers just in case. Around 8pm, I decided to eat some warm soup. Put more ice on my face. Went to sleep. Woke up, and I don't feel a thing. I can kinda feel some stitches in the back of my mouth, but as far as pain goes, nothing! He told me that it wouldn't be nearly as bad as my tonsillectomy, and he was right. Dr. Lyu is DEFINITELY the one to see if you have any kind of oral surgery needs. I will be referring all of my friends to him. read more

3 days before Christmas + Wisdom Teeth Extraction = Bad Holiday? Wrong! I had my wisdom teeth removed by Dr. Lyu and it was very easy! I had local anesthesia and the procedure took less than 10 minutes! Yes, it was that easy. I didn't need to take my pain medication all the time because I started to heal really well and fast. My Christmas was not ruined like I thought it would be. I didn't get to enjoy too much of the holiday treats, but my waistline was fine with that! Along with the staff, Dr. Lyu was very friendly. I made 3 appointments to get my wisdom teeth removed between ages 18 and 22 and I chickened out every time. I let it get to the point where my wisdom teeth were causing me quite a bit of pain (one had partially broken through and became infected since I couldn't clean it properly) and Dr. Lyu was kind enough to see me same day. He gave me some antibiotics to get rid of the infection and scheduled me for surgery 3 days later. The office is conveniently located in Union Square and the staff was very kind and helpful. I was freaking out a little bit (read crying and hyperventilating) as they were preparing me for anesthesia but Dr. Lyu and his two assistants helped calm me down. I don't remember the procedure at all (a good sign) and was home about an hour later. My recovery went unbelievably well with the exception of the first day. I waited too long to take the pain medication and was in a significant amount of pain for about an hour. Otherwise, it went really smoothly and was much easier than I expected it would be. I only removed the wisdom teeth on the right side because I had to pay for it completely out of pocket but I will be going back to Dr. Lyu to have the teeth on the left side removed. I ultimately still found this to be a positive experience, but I wanted to update with post-surgery care, Dr. Lyu is good at what he does, but he's not the best with the reassurances for skittish patients. I was throwing up on antibiotics, so I called the office and Dr. Lyu was pretty helpful. However, two days later, I developed intense pain in one socket that radiated across my jaw, through my ear and forehead. Dr. Lyu was very dismissive. He told me to take the pain meds that had made me throw up the day before, and I felt rushed on the phone. If he had just listened to me and taken me seriously the first time I called, I would have felt so much more comfortable. Long story short: I went in for a check-up, Dr. Lyu "rinsed" the socket, found nothing and told me I must have been having phantom pain. Two days later, I found a peppercorn embedded in the socket, which the syringe managed to get out. Not disastrous by any means, but certainly something. If I hadn't been condescended to, I would have solved it earlier-- and you pay too much money to get treated dismissively. read more

Having my wisdom teeth extracted was never going to be an *enjoyable* experience. But I think it went as well as it could have. Dr. Peter Lyu is AMAZING! I had my wisdom tooth pulled out this week at Dr Lyu's office. The assistant was very nice and set up an appointment for me for the next day! Dr. Lyu was very professional and did a great job explaining the situation, laying out out the options, and discussing the possible outcomes. Being a very indecisive person, I spent almost 10 minutes to decide and Dr. Lyu was extremely patient with me throughout the process. When I finally decided to pull out one wisdom tooth that day, he and his assistant got ready for the surgery within seconds (extremely efficient!). I was so so so scared to get my wisdom teeth out that I actually had nightmares about it! Was dreading the day so much that I almost didn't walk in the doors but I'm so glad that I did. I am Conflicted: Fine Medical Service but Front Office Procedure Unethical I am not sure how to balance very positive medical service with big negative of unethical front office in my star rating. I gave four stars for medical service. I went to his Los Gatos office (Wednesdays only) for two wisdom teeth extraction and the procedure went fine, no pain, only minor ache and minor swelling afterwards, no infection afterwards. I was apprehensive, but in retrospect, it was fine and a lot easier than I had expected. He prescribed painkillers which I did not get and I did not even take over-the-counter ones. Dr Lyu and the assistant were very caring and thoughtful made sure I was comfortable and gave clear post-op instructions. Dr Lyu was straightforward and struck me as competent. There wasn't much small talk, but that was fine with me. However, my very first visit, prior to surgery, was for a consult and I found the front office procedure to be unethical. Before I was allowed to meet Dr Lyu, or discussed my situation with him, on phone or in person, the front office made me sign a statement that I had discussed my case with him (In an outlined box on form and in bold letters) and I must sign the form that I discussed my case with him (that is, sign PRIOR to me meeting him for first time or discussing my case with him.) Otherwise, if I did not sign this obviously non-factual statement, my appointment would be cancelled. I think the front office at Los Gatos, affiliated with Kothari Dental, is staffed by at least one controlling clerical person. She had no concern that I was being asked to sign something wrong, just responded that it is simple: they will cancel my appointment if I do not sign it---- even though it is clearly wrong and not factual. My current dentist referred me to Dr. Lyu. I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Lyu and had to do X Rays on my initial consultation. The scans showed that I have three horizontally impacted teeth and one that was non-impacted. Dr. Lyu clearly explained the procedure to me and did not attempt to sugar coat the experience or the procedure, which I really appreciated. After the consultation, I scheduled the surgery date with the receptionist. Due to a busy schedule, I had to reschedule the appointment a few times. Both receptionists were very patient with me and accommodated my requests and answered any questions that I had in the days leading up to the surgery. I was also given a quote update via email whenever I had deductions from my coverage to reflect the most updated charges. I developed a sore throat on the day of the scheduled surgery. I called in and the nurse handed the phone to Dr. Lyu. Dr. Lyu advised me to reschedule the surgery despite having planned for the surgery because the sore throat is a sign of infection and inflammation and it would prolong my recovery time if I had undergone the surgery. I took his advice and reschedule the surgery date when I felt better. On the actual surgery day, they checked me in on time. Because my X Ray scans were taken more than a year prior to the surgery, I was able to take another scan for free. I remembered talking very briefly to Dr. Lyu and followed the instructions that his assistant gave me. The entire experience was not horrible at all. I woke up and did not feel groggy at all. I had very minor bleeding unlike the experience of a lot of people around me who had undergone the same procedure. I did throw up from the pain medication/antibiotics on my first dosage. It was probably because I had too little food and too much acid in my stomach. After some rest, I took the second dosage of meds with more food and a protein shake and I was fine so I did not feel the need to contact Dr. Lyu. The pain was really minimal. If anything, the areas of incision just felt tender. I did not need to take the pain meds starting the second day. On the next day, I had swelling on only one side of my cheeks, which is better than I expected because I had three badly impacted teeth. I am on my fourth day of recovery now and just had a checkup at the clinic and everything is looking great. The swelling is almost all gone and I can start the hot compresses to reduce the puffiness. Normally, on a Yelp reviewer would say, "I am definitely coming back." Since wisdom teeth extraction is a once in a lifetime experience (thankfully), I highly recommend Dr. Lyu. He is very skillful and competent. He is also calm and he has a great team of staff. My experience could not have been better. read more

He had been made aware of my negative feedback/review from another patient of his, but had heard nothing of my letter/ issue with the consultation charge from his front office staff. I have never dealt with a more unprofessional, disorganized, and frustrating doctors office. I was referred to Dr. Lyu by my dentist Dr. Susie Shin (Who I absolutely love) for a dental implant procedure which would require a bone graft. I should have been realized this was not a tightly run ship when Dr. Lyu's office staff didnt return my first 2 calls in an attempt to schedule the consultation. I went in for the consultation,and spoke with Dr. Lyu about what was required. He is very likable and I did feel confident in going through my procedure with him. Then came the estimate. No one at the office thought to tell me they were out of network for my specific dental plan (which by the way is surprising, I am insured under a great company with one of the best and most comprehensive dental plans around) for the duration of no less than 4 phone calls and 3 emails to figure out the problem(why my estimate was for a few thousand more than I had expected) . Yes, I should have looked him up on my provider list to check, but I also assumed (wrongfully) that someone would tell me if I was electing to have 2 x $2,500 procedures that wouldn't be covered. I was very disappointed with the service I received from his front desk staff, which is too bad as I do trust Dr. Shin when she says that Dr. Lyu is an exceptional oral surgeon. I have read other reviewers this happened to, the billing procedures here feel very underhanded and dishonest, its as if they were hoping I just assumed this wasn't covered by my insurance and would pay the total cost, when in reality this specific procedure has 90% coverage under my Aetna. If you can get past the scheduling, customer service, billing, and insurance debacle that is his front desk staff, Dr. Lyu may be fabulous, Having an office that operates in this shady, disorganized manner did not instill me with confidence though. read more

First of all, what a wonderful staff Dr. Lyu has! I went to Dr. Lyu to have all 4 wisdom teeth extracted. I was very nervous about the pain and swelling and the potential of missing work afterward. I went in on a Friday morning for the extractions. The procedure seemed to take no time at all and I have no memory of the surgery. I didn't have any pain or discomfort in the chair and none when I got home. I've heard some really horrific wisdom teeth stories and I was happy mine was so painless and easy. Dr. Lyu is such a wonderful doctor, very kind and professional and he has a great personality. Very good surgeon . This morning, Dr. Lyu removed one of my wisdom teeth and one debris left by previous surgery (done in another place). The whole process is about 15 mins and I didn't feel pain. After the effect of local anaesthesia, the wound is unconformable for ~ 2 hours, but not very painful so I didn't need to take the painkiller. Now it's 6 hours and all pains are gone. Hopefully there won't be infection in the coming days. I still have a horizontal impaction wisdom teeth, which is said to be challenging to remove ( wisdom teeth is an evolutionary bug! ). Will have it removed in the same place. read more

I met with Dr. Lyu personally at every visit and he was frank and honest about the possible side effects, recovery etc. Dr. Lyu and his staff are kind, professional and caring. My surgery was on Friday morning and I was back at work on Monday! I don't even remember the surgery, it was over in less than an hour and I had only about one or two days of pain and swelling. I felt the price was very fair for the excellent care I received and the attention I was given. My insurance didn't cover the procedure and they arranged a payment plan. I came in late on Friday afternoon at the request of my Dentist. This was a last minute thing. I'd never met Dr. Lyu and when he told me I could have the tooth out right away I was a little wary at first. We spoke about it for a while and I agreed. I couldn't have imagined that it would be so quick and simple. I don't think I was in the chair more than 10 minutes. This guy is really competent. For what it was, I cannot imagine better. I called on Saturday and they fit me in for appointment Tuesday after talking with staff on Monday. Walked in 9:55 am, filled out forms, in chair 10:10 before appointment time of 10:15. Dentist right on time, tooth out in less than 10 minutes, paid and walked out of building 10:30. All communication from the dentist and staff were professional and clear (not the case with other dentists I have seen recently). Bad billing services. I provided my insurance info during my consultation. But, since then I have been getting all kinds of bills for something that should have been covered. I even spoke with my insurance provider, and they confirmed that I was completely covered. I agree with other reviewers, the Dr. seems very professional.
