I wanted to get something special for Matt B.'s 40th birthday last year, and when I sought advice…read morefrom my friend Deb V., who writes about art for the L.A. Times, she suggested I check out Gemini G.E.L. She introduced me to Ayn and Ellen Grinstein, whose father Stanley was one of the founders, and Deb went with me for my first visit last March.
Gemini is an artists' workshop and fine art publisher that's been around since 1966. It has a tight roster of artists who create work with and at Gemini, including giants like John Baldessari and Richard Serra and younger visionaries like Julie Mehretu and Analia Saban. Ayn and Ellen grew up with famous artists partying at their house, and part of the fun of a Gemini visit is absorbing that particular slice of Los Angeles art history in a Melrose facility designed by (Gemini collaborator) Frank Gehry.
Ayn gave me the full tour, and it was marvelous. Gemini has both workshop and gallery spaces, and I loved seeing all the art on display as well as some of what was happening behind the scenes. The Serra studio was particularly mesmerizing.
Gemini specializes in lithographs, which are original pieces with limited print runs. If you're interested in acquiring, say, a Robert Rauschenberg or Jasper Johns artwork, a lithograph is much more affordable than a painting. It was a good idea for a big birthday present, especially one that would be living at my house. The only problem was there were too many cool lithographs to choose from, and I didn't want to pick for Matt.
I ended up bringing him to Gemini and making another couple of trips on my own. Matt got the tour too, and we spent quite some time thinking about what we wanted to buy. We finally decided to pull the trigger on a beautiful Serra piece, but when I went to make the purchase, I happened to run into a group of visitors from the Beverly Hills Hotel, who were there to curate a Gemini exhibition at the hotel. They were looking at a lithograph Ed Ruscha made in honor of Ayn and Ellen's father, featuring the house where they grew up, with the words "UNSTRUCTURED MERRIMENT" printed across the image.
That lithograph now hangs over our fireplace, our high-brow Los Angeles "Live, Laugh, Love." Ayn was incredibly gracious throughout this year-long process. The actual transaction was easy, and she arranged things with the framer (Art Services on Melrose), where I was able to use the significant Gemini discount. I learned a lot from Ayn and Gemini G.E.L. and could not be happier with our purchase. I hope to visit again soon, even if it's just to hang out.
ETA: Richard Serra died the same day I posted this review. What a tremendous loss. May he rest in peace.
