My regular gym was the Rödingsmarkt location, but that one closed for 3 months back in May for…read morerenovation. They're now a month late with no signs of completing soon, so I imagine they're using the same crew that handled the Elbphilharmonie. Prior to the renovation, the Rödingsmarkt location was just a regular Fitness First, so going to the Europa Passage Platinum Club location should have been a step up. Sure enough, the workout machines are slightly fancier with rep counters and timers, the locker room finishes are higher end, and they have an entirely non-advertised hand/shower towel service (I still have no idea if you have to pay for this given how few people use it). However, it feels a lot like flying Premium Economy on a A380. The finishes are nicer, but you're still stuck in an airplane with 300 other people. As others have pointed out, the biggest plus to this location is the view. It's on the 3rd floor with sweeping views of Jungfernstieg and the Alster. On a clear/sunny day, it's really awesome. Otherwise, this location is pretty small overall, especially compared to Rödingsmarkt pre-renovation. I stick to morning hours since it's pretty much unusably cramped later in the day. Even in the morning, there's constant passive aggressiveness racing to get to the machines first but, since it's mostly the same set of folks, we've learned each other's routine as long as no "I'm going to the gym every morning now" person shows up randomly for a day or two. The biggest downside to this location is that they do the morning classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in the small freestyle training area, which leaves no other area/equipment for everyone else at the gym. They also blast music for those workouts on top of the gym's music, which makes for some really awful layering. Pro tip: with the exception of Tuesdays, you can just go into the group studio to avoid those classes. The Jungfernstieg U-Bahn, S-Bahn, and bus stops are all close to Europa Passage, so this location is definitely convenient from a public transport point-of-view. It also has a StadtRAD station right in front of it. Pro tip: stick to the main elevators, not the outside glass elevator. That thing is slower than molasses. All in all, while I'll be gone before they ever finish the renovations, I'd probably go back to Rödingsmarkt over Europa Passage, especially since the former will re-open as a Platinum Club with the same higher-end finishes as the latter but with nearly twice the amount of space.

This is my favorite gym in Hamburg. It is not the biggest nor does it have the most variety of…read morefitness programs, but what it does have are qualities that I find convenient. It is in the Europa Passage and one can take an elevator from the outside street level which for some time was privately only accessible directly to Fitness First, but now the lift stops at Seven Oceans, a seafood restaurant located below, so if you share the ride with others who need to make a layover to the restaurant, your trip is less direct to the top. My favorite things to do here are the spin courses and cardio machines that overlook the gorgeous Alster lake. It makes you feel like you are doing sports outside, but from the inside of a climate controlled studio. The spin classes are intense but they have great instructors who play good music depending if you go on Classic Rock night or Dance/Disco club hit favorites. The lights are turned down and a blacklight keeps the room glowing in neon. The crowd here is also more business focused so often I see clients from the banks or media and even legal offices working out here. Since the size of this gym is not very large, it has more an intimate vibe, because you really get to see, meet and know members here on a more personal level. Best part ever? You can go shopping at the mall either before or after your workout, grab a bite to eat, or jump on several trains below the mall since there are the U3, U1, U2 and S trains to choose from. If you do the monthly pass, the prices are a bit higher, but monthly is available here.

I've been working out at Meridian since 2006 when I moved to Hamburg. I've seen my share of gyms…read moreover the years and I have to admit, after working out at almost all of the Meridian locations, this one is most ghetto. Unfortunately, after changing jobs, the Wandsbek studio is the nearest to me. Hence I'm forced to go here if i want to get in lunchtime workouts. I prefer the Eppendorf studio as it seems to be the cleanest and City was quite good. I am sure the newer the studio, the better. Nevertheless, Wandsbek is getting on in years. Further, the crowd that works out there is not really high-end, if you know what I mean. You definitely have a different crowd in Eppendorf. One positive is that the ancient weight room in back is still great if you are really into lifting heavy weights. Although the stuff in that room is dated, it still remains far better than many of today's modern machines. You have a solid squat rack as well as shoulder press rack and the ability to go heavy. The locker rooms and showers are also getting older and it's downright ridiculous if you have a locker upstairs and have to go downstairs to shower and then back up. Total waste of time. The spa area is OK but not the best I've seen and if I ever want to hit the steam room or swim, I prefer Eppendorf. That's rare but again, somehow this location has lost its luster. If you can, make another gym your home base. If you're forced to work out here as there aren't that many options in the area, try to get away and hit the other studios when time allows.

After 15 years being a member of Meridan Spa Wandsbek its time to write my first and only report…read moreabout this facility: Its gettting worse over the time ! Nowadays its a place where mostly foreigners from southern europe or other non-german nationalities are the visitors, with all kinds of negative side effects for those who just want to do a work out. Anyway, this is probably the new trend in Germany anyhow, but in addition to that the customer service is lousy ! Most of the time Meridian Staff is present, but instead of inspecting training equipment they just walk around to show their presence and at complaints a reaction is not seen. I complained about the breach of Meridian Bylaws by some of these visitors, but ignorance is all I received as response. I tried over years to find out if there might be a reaction from the office staff, so when canceling my membership I thought to get a reaction - no reaction, Meridian is just pushing to get more new members of a specific kind instead of keeping customers. Talking to other long term members I heard the same complaints. Just because there was no better SPA around, me and my friends where forced to stay. Now its over and I strongly recommend anybody who wants to do sports: Look for any other Fitness studio elsewhere - unless you prefer a oriental flair. Paul J. wrote a review on 3/19/2013 and I fully agree to him: Meridian has become the most ghetto of all Meridians in the city of Hamburg !
