I honestly do not know how one can treat customers the way they do and still stay open for business. The bar tender (and possibly owner) was extremely rude, aggressive and insulting. The concept here is that you pay 2€ for a wine glass, sample their selection of wines freely, and pay what you thought it was worth when you leave. Half my group paid and left early, and he came over to us to tell us that our friends were cheap, and that we should make up the difference, and insulted us in various ways. Not feeling comfortable, we left (and still left a reasonable donation) but the guy came out onto the street to yell at us, and said he hoped he would never see us here again. I'm astonished at the rude behavior, and have never been treated like this by personnel in any establishment in my life, but it doesn't seem like we were the exception. My question is that if you have to consistently and aggressively harass customers over the years to pay what YOU think is right in this "pay as you wish" model, why not change it?! There will always be free riders in a system, and berating other oblivious customers to make up for it is clearly not a sound business model, especially since the guy seems to be extremely miserable. But it's his choice and I don't feel bad at all. read more

After all the negative reviews I was a bit sceptical... And I absolutely loved the place! As for wine, you just got to make a smart choice, out of a few bottles one or two are sure to be to your liking, if not, just ask for advice, the personnel are there for you. I was blown away by the food tonight - we ordered tacos and seafood sevice and both dishes was simply fantastic. Authentic and tasted like heaven. Will definitely come again. In a word - cosy place to chill for a calm evening, or just some wine and dine Pay some extra, don't try to screw the system :) Longer version (for the brave) - must admit first, that I haven't been to weinerei or however you spell it yet, but understood that's the "little brother" With 2 euro entry and bottomless wine Tucked away in a very unexpected place, took me a minute to figure out there's actually a bar in that street (missed the huge barrel of wine in the front somehow) - Rather small and cosy place, plus not too crowded in the middle of the week, at least when we were there, so if you need a quiet one- you got it Biggest advantage is that you're not allowed to smoke inside, love it. The food is simple but well made, it all looked, smelled and tasted delicious. Nice variety of wine to choose from, there were about 10 bottles on the table, first you pay and get a glass, then you drink and eat as you want, and at the end you pay what you think is fair. I got a little sour face from the guy who works there when I paid (a fair price, swear!) not sure what they expect.. that pissed me off a little, but still a rather nice experience. This place operates on a new concept to me that absolutely fits with my personality. The idea is that you pay 2 euros for a glass, then fill it up as much as you want with the large variety of excellent wines they have available. Then at the end of the night you pay what you think is fair based on how much you drink and how much you enjoyed yourself. They also have food--which they buy and cook fresh daily--but to guarantee you get some, it's best to make a reservation. I am by no means a connoisseur of wine, but that is exactly why I like this place. It gave me the chance to take little sips of wines that were questionable and heartily enjoy the ones I deemed delicious. But with such free flowing wine, it's a little easy to get carried away, so be sure to take advantage of the free water--which is pretty sweet in Berlin. Because of them I found a white wine that I actually enjoy. I love that nothing stops you from testing everything out. And the atmosphere is super cool. The night I went, there had only been one reservation made, but the place was packed--that's how good it was. But because of that they ran out of food so I haven't had a chance to try it yet, which is my only lamentation. So far, the plan is to head back there tonight so I'm in a good mood. read more

This Weinerei is small and cosy, with lots of mismatched chairs and tables in a living room type setting. The concept is the same as other Weinereis-pay 1E 'entry' ie, get a glass and then help yourself to the selection of wines. There is also usually food, though this runs out around midnight, but it is also 'help yourself'. At the end you then pay what you think you should. The (patronising) staff tell you you should give 2E a glass, but since the glasses are only 0,1l this seems a little bit much. I have not had any trouble myself(usually because I feel too guilty to underpay) but if you appear to be abusing the system then the staff may pick you up on it. read more

Horrible place. I had three glasses of wine and paid 25€ (way too much but at that point I liked that place and wanted to support them). So I put a 20€ bill into the jar and then a 5€ bill. The staff (I think it was the owner) only saw me putting in the 5€ bill and started making rude comments to me and my company for not paying enough etc. I explained to him that I just put in 25€ but at that point some other customers chimed in with his rants. So we left the place. I should have taken back my money but the place was getting really uncomfortable and hostile and so we left quickly. I see that other customers had similar experiences so this seems to be their normal way of treating customers. read more

The WORST service and staff attitude ever seen in my life. Extremely cheap wine in bad quality. The "2 euro" policy n saying you can pay WHATEVER amount you want at the end is only a DISHONEST bait to lead you in. Juging by the food quantity and being served by drunk &unprofessional staff, anything above 10 would be too much. But be careful-they would scream n shout at you plus embarrass you in front of friends as you fairly reflect the above service with the 'whatever you want' amount of money. read more

An example on how not to treat clients. It works this way: you pay 2 euros at the beginning and then, at the end, you add the amount you consider is fair and you can afford. I had a very small portion of turkey and 4 glasses of one of the worst red wines I have ever tasted but didn't complain as the alternative atmosphere indicated that quality was not the important there, but the principles and sharing concept. When I left I put another 10 euros. One of the waiters inmediately started yelling to me in a very rude way, with no explanation at all, "you are not going to pay 12 euros, you pay more or you leave and never come back". At first I thought he was joking but was for real. So, what they have is a doble moral and hypocresy concept where they encourage you to pay your will and then if they are not satisfied, then they just insult you. I guess they don't fix prices because then the bar would be empty with such an horrendous wine and service (who by the way was drunk). read more
