All of this is IMHO : A "newspaper" clearly biased to the…read moreleft, with the pejorative verbs, adjectives, and views expressed in its headlines, cartoons, editorial content and letters, and articles aimed toward any/all of readers of other persuasions--apparently not realizing that unbiased reporting is what many of its readers/subscribers would prefer. It even puts political "cartoons" on the "funny pages" as if they were funny instead of hostile and not funny at all. They belong on the editorial page. When it isn't politicizing events and mocking people they don't support who serve in the government, the neutral articles are interesting and a nice break from the biased rhetoric. There are others in the community who subscribe in order to learn about local events and businesses, who have to endure the adverse political onslaught just to get to the local information. (Do they wonder why subscriptions are lower than past years?) Living near a college town doesn't excuse the lack of quality unbiased reporting. Sometimes I wonder if they realize the community already has the Flagpole and the Red and Black- and that editorializing belongs on the editorial page in a community newspaper.

During my wandering in Athens, I not only spotted the marker with the history but I also caught a…read morenewspaper box offering free copies. I picked one up and flipped through it over coffee. The marker is near the UGA Arch. It reads, "Students published the first issue of the University of Georgia's campus newspaper, The Red and Black, on Nov. 24, 1893, from offices in the Academic Building (now the Hunter-Holmes Academic Building). The tabloid boosted school spirit, promoted athletic programs and reported on cultural activities for the University's 212 students. The weekly paper was the official organ of the Athletic Council from 1895 to 1928, when it became a laboratory for the School of Journalism in the Commerce-Journalism Building. It was a semiweekly when it moved with the school to the Journalism Building in 1968 and changed to a broadsheet format. In 1980, The Red and Black became independent of the University, supported by advertising, directed by volunteer professionals and produced by students off campus. In 1991, publication was expanded from four to five days a week. The Red and Black has provided University students with valuable training and experience. Distinguished alumni include John E. Drewry, the first dean of the School of Journalism; many acclaimed publishers, editors and writers; leaders in broadcasting, public relations and advertising; and recipients of Pulitzer Prizes, Peabody and Academy Awards." It's marker number 029-18 and was erected in 1994 by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. The Red & Black is an independent student newspaper in Athens, Georgia, known for sharp reporting and vibrant campus coverage. Founded in 1893 and operating independently since 1980, it offers news, opinion, sports, and culture with a bold, student-driven voice. Its staff of student editors and reporters gain real-world experience while shaping editorial content that reflects both university life and broader civic issues. With a headquarters on Baxter Street and a strong digital presence, it remains a vital chronicle of Athens and the University of Georgia. The cover page I saw was about black cemeteries in Athens which was interesting and while I was tempted to check them out (I love cemeteries), I did not have time on this visit.
