I love digging into my box each week to see what I've gotten. So much fun trying new fruits or veggies.

We bought fruit, pastries, home made lemonade and chocolates. Of course we ate them all up! Prices weren't cheap however, we are just visiting so I have nothing to compare them to. The market sits on Granville Island, which used to be an industrial area before being transformed in the 1970s into a cultural and food hub. Getting there is part of the fun: you can take a quick water taxi across False Creek, drive, or grab a regular taxi. We went the easy route and arrived by car, but I'd love to try the water bus next time for the full experience. We got there later in the evening on a Sunday, so they closed early and time was limited. Before I even stepped inside, I spotted a vendor making maple candy--the kind that is poured onto ice and rolled up o to a stick. Highly recommend giving this very Canadian treat a try! Inside, it's exactly what you hope for: a lively space packed with vendors--produce, baked goods, prepared foods, local specialties. I had a short must-try list, starting with Lee's Donuts, Siegel's Bagels, and a hunt for Nanaimo bars, the iconic no-bake Canadian dessert named after the city of Nanaimo in British Columbia. Even with little time, it was fun weaving through the stalls and admiring all the products. Since we were visiting during the holidays, there were extra vendors selling arts, crafts, and locally made sweets, which made the whole place feel even more festive. We picked up bottles of maple syrup to bring home as gifts and also tried a few canelés. After we enjoyed our dinner, I stepped outside and took a moment to soak in the view--city lights reflecting on the water, the bridge glowing in the distance, everything calm and picturesque. It was a quiet contrast to the busy market inside and ended the visit on a really peaceful note. Definitely take in the view if you have a minute! Even though we didn't have as much time as I would have liked, it was still a great experience. Granville Island Public Market absolutely lives up to its "must-do" reputation.

I guess I didn't look very hard! My girlfriend was the one who informed me that this was actually a salad bar place ! Yey! There is 2 rather large steel tables, the one on the far left side has the fresh fruit assortment. To the right, is a selection of greens, and other veggies. There are also some grain based salads and pasta items. The other table has some chickpeas and more veggies, cheese, tofu, tuna, turkey, assorted nuts, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, and of course - dressings. The salad bar goes by weight. They have a few different sized clear plastic containers you use, and fill up as you see fit. A large container filled up comes to around the $10 mark - give or take. The produce is fresh, and the staff seems fairly friendly. They also sell pop and juice in a cooler you also help yourself to if you so desire. I always take mine to go as I live just upstairs in the building, but they do have a seating area if you wish to eat there. I don't think it seats too many, but it's never super busy. So, if your downtown, want something healthy, fresh, fast and not overly pricey, this is a place you really should check out!

Usually at these places i'm wary of flies flying around, but pretty clean here. Some window action here, seating along the sides. You can also buy some fruit here too, of course. Limited street meter parking but at least there's no rush hour restrictions. If you dare, go park in the loading zone right by the alley ;)

The ready-to-eat meals and bakery are both good but not great, but worth it for the price. The bakery desserts always look exciting, but the execution is sometimes underwhelming - the cakes are too sweet for me. I have always gotten excellent bread from the bakery though. Staff is mostly pretty nice. Occasionally I've met employees who seem unhappy to be having to deal with me, but those are a minority. I say I "used to" like Nester's because today I came here to grab a quick dinner, and as I was leaving, a mouse ran out from underneath the condiments/trash counter in the eating area, running right into my foot before scurrying out of sight again. Seeing that this is apparently an ongoing issue, I think I'll be avoiding this store for a while. Have to leave just 1 star even though I do still like their food because I cannot recommend a store with a rodent problem in good conscience.

Another pro is the clienteles don't "poke" at the produce here as much. Which makes it allot more enjoyable shopping here. Due to location and focused clientele, yes the prices are at a premium. If this corner of DT Yaletown is in comparison to Upper East Side in Manhattan. The pricing is about right. Street parking is available, this market is on one of the best bike lanes in DT Vancouver. They have an outdoor market stand with beautiful, colorful vegetables on display (and pretty flowers, too), and it's always caught my eye. So I finally visited here the other day when I was walking about the 'hood. There are quite a few positive features about this place, but some negatives, too. Hence the average, 3-star rating. First the positives: they have a decent selection of fresh, organic produce. The place is clean and well stocked. Inside, they have packaged meals and slices of cakes, and quite a few cheeses. There are shelves in the back containing most pantry staples, so in a pinch, you could probably find the basics here - and more. And the items that were on "special" or sale had prices comparable to my No Frills, so that was good to see. The downside: those items that were not on sale were exorbitantly priced. I'd say on average, prices are higher than at Urban Fare. Perhaps on a par with Whole Foods. And the set-up at the cash was a cluster**** when I was there, with three of us customers at the counter and the cashier trying to juggle us all simultaneously (which was really odd). Whatever system they have for ringing out, it wasn't working when I was there. Luckily, none of us was impatient or had anger management issues (with another group, it could've turned out much differently. We three all kinda looked at each other and just shrugged our shoulders). I guess if I lived nearby, I'd pop in here occasionally to see what produce was on sale, but due to the prices, this wouldn't be my go-to place for regular shopping.
