I am a single mother and was up here completely alone. I realize now this was a terrible decision, probably the worst of my life thanks to Carol Filmanski's actions, but I had hoped it would work out. On March 3, 2015, I was in the city working when I received the email that school was closing early. I frantically rushed to Grand Central but missed the 11:43 train by 3 minutes. So I was forced to take the 12:43 train. That puts me to Garrison where I would normally pick up my daughter from rec after school. Knowing I would get to her probably 10 minutes after dismissal from school today, I called (mind you, at this point I am sobbing hysterically in Grand Central). I begged Kelly and Carol Filmanski to please have someone stand with her on the playground until I got there at 2:10. Ten minutes!! Carol told me they would put my 6 year old on the bus and maybe my landlord could get her. She also told me I need an emergency plan. My daughter has never ridden the bus and would not have even known where to get off. Our driveway is incredibly steep and no one would've been home. Is this truly how you would've handled this situation?! I understand needing a plan. Normally when it's going to snow I do not even go into the city at all. But as a parent, can you understand the sheer panic I experienced when someone from my daughter's school threatened to simply cast her out on her own, in the snow no less?! I lost all trust in the school district that day and pulled her out of school there completely. Carol Filmanski is a disgrace to the district and quite frankly the Earth and should be fired or not allowed to work near children. What a horrible human being! Absolutely disgusting! I did reach out to the pricipal and he agreed to meet with me. I'm sure he felt bad about how it was handled, but as long as Carol was employed by the district I wouldn't feel safe sending my child there.

I spoke with Margie, in charge of Alumni Connections who told me to call back on Friday when she would have more time to speak with me and handle my issue. I remember feeling as if it can be handled right then and there when I explained it to her, and it wasn't so complicated. In fact the whole thing would have taken all but three minutes no matter how we resolved it. I left not one but two voice messages for her on that Friday at her request and she never called back. This was two weeks ago yesterday. I do not think she forgot and I don't think she is that busy. If she forgot to call back or didn't have time, then she can't handle her job very well. I feel as if it was done purposely though. If she does not want or is unable to cater to someone, there are more professional ways of handling it than telling a person to call in order not to call. I was surprised to see that such a fine institution as Hackley, hires staff that do not represent the extraordinary excellence they pride everyone else in their school in having; teachers, students and families. I think Hackley should have higher standards when screening out for certain roles such as Director of Alumni Engagement to better set an example for their students on how to interact with people.

Even more, as our son was starting their program she actively encouraged us to stop by with him after hours multiple times, to acclimate him to the environment before starting up. Since enrolling our son in July 2019, we have been provided nothing short of high quality child care by a supportive, compassionate, and safety-minded staff and leadership team. We were present during the transition to the current web/app-based communication and documentation tool. It has provided us with a more than adequate level of security and connectivity with the daycare. Since the roll-out of the system last year, it was made clear that it was the parents' responsibility to check-in children on arrival. To think that a teacher should take the extra time - away from the other kids in class - to make up for your own irresponsible mismanagement of the platform is selfish and ridiculous. I, for one, am completely satisfied that the teachers prioritize direct care of the children over task-saturation within an online recording tool. The app-based tool has also provided parents with secure, direct access through a bluetooth-enabled unlocking system. Anyone that would consider providing access to this app to an unauthorized person is a security risk, and I think we are a safer community with this person gone. When I exit the facility, I either wait for someone entering to do so with their own access or I confirm with the staff at the front desk that the person belongs here before opening the door. I hope that everyone would challenge me in the same way when I enter! We are a community of families and should each have a vested interest in the safety of our children that supercedes an ease-of-access mindset. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 health crisis, the leadership at Discovery Village has been completely transparent about the challenges of both managing a business and meeting the demands of working parents in this environment. The center quickly adapted to the new normal by implementing more than the State-required sanitation protocols and providing regular updates to families. We suspended our enrollment in late March and returned to the village in May and have had ZERO complications. The idea that Discovery Village is, was, or has been lax about their cleaning and COVID protocol mandates is a baseless and belligerent accusation. This team is professional to the core! I would be remiss to not mention that our son absolutely loves his teachers at Discovery Village. He is happy as can be every day we pick him up and his learning and curiosity is clearly nurtured. I recommend this center to anyone looking for high quality care by a team that is genuinely invested in the well-being and development of your child. Thank you for all that you do.
