The room and building was clean and well-kept, and the breakfast buffet had more items than this type of hotel normally has. There was also a surprisingly nice coffee maker in the lobby that had specialty coffee settings. And the early afternoon staff who checked me in were very friendly. The hotel backs onto the Lynbrook golf course, and most of the neighbouring buildings are other hotels and a pair of senior's residences (I was travelling with a dog, so I walked around a bit), so it's a quiet area in general. There's no restaurant, but there are a reasonable number of other options in the area along the way on the drive in from the highway.

We were uneasy about the lack of sneeze guards over the hot items and the close proximity of the dining tables. In general, this hotel could use a larger lobby and dining area. There are plenty of rooms to support it and the smaller areas makes it difficult to keep a comfortable distance from other guests.

I wanted to be able to walk around the old downtown, so this hotel's location was perfect. The decor in the lobby is lovely and draws attention to the character that comes with being an older building. The halls were a little dingy in parts, but not dramatically so. The elevator was small but always came quickly. My room was a clean and had a good-sized bathroom and surprising large refrigerator. The floor looked like it had been recently replaced with a laminate-type faux-wood (possibly because I was in one of the dog-friendly rooms?) but it seemed like it hadn't been measured properly, because there were some gaps between the planks. The parking lot is located behind the building next-door, so you enter and exit through a side door. This was slightly confusing when I checked in, but wasn't an issue after that. I didn't try the on-site restaurant, but I did notice that people staying elsewhere (and locals) seemed to be eating there, so maybe I should have given it a go. Overall, a nice solid character hotel in a convenient location!

A comfortable 42 degrees C, it is well designed with seamless inside\outside area's for guests to enjoy. However, the shower/bathroom facilities were similar to what I would expect of your average public swimming pool. The steam room was closed for repairs. Basic amenities I usually take for granted when I go to a spa were not offered. I am talking about the fancy shampoos, conditioners, body lotions, but most importantly, pool sandals. I have some reservations about using a public shower in bare feet but I can't exactly take a shower in my leather sandals can I? Anyway, assuming the spa is profitable, I believe some renovations are in order here. As far as the lack of basic amenities, this is something management should be taking care of now.

Our room was recently updated with 2 queens, flat screen TV, table/chairs, full washroom, and a kitchenette (with Keurig machine, oven, fridge, sink - as well as plates/cutlery/pots/pans etc). The room was large, clean, and convenient. The rates are amazing for what you get. The fact that the hotel is dog friendly is extremely handy. There is greenspace to walk the dog and convenient bins for the waste. Breakfast is typical continental - toast, bagels, coffee, juice, yogurt, muffins, cereal etc. What more do you need/expect? I had no trouble with noise from other guests or the highway. My only suggestion is for the room to have a few more kitchen utensils (sharp knife, baking sheet, and cheese grater were all missing). I would recommend the Thriftlodge for anyone needing a no-frills place to stay. Its location on the highway is great for passers-through, but it's also great for locals who might need a staycation or to escape renovations or relatives for an affordable price!

And the typical fare: breads, bagels, cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, coffee, tea, juice, and sausage and eggs to go with your pancakes. Front desk staff is fair. Not overtly rude, not overly friendly. Hence the fair. The parking lot is sufficient.

It's a newer hotel just off the Trans-Canada Highway and at $108/night we found it to be to our liking. The room was clean, comfortable and spacious. Breakfast was adequate with hard boiled eggs, cereals, muffins, yogurt and a waffle maker. There was a hot tub, and an indoor pool with the bonus slide which always scores a few points with the kids. We may well be back here on our next trip out west!
